We are thrilled to invite you to the Daffodil Cabaret\, a spring fundraising event co-hosted by the Wilton High School Theater Arts Association and the Little Theater Club at the Norwalk Inn. This evening promises to be a spectacular celebration of talent\, community and camaraderie. \n\n\nTickets are $30 for students and $85 for adults. Tickets includes a welcome beverage\, dinner and coffee. The series will run as follows: \n3/20/24: Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue\n4/10/24: Dave Brubeck’s Time Out\n5/22/24: John Coltrane’s Giant Steps\n6/18/24: Jazz Post-1959 Diverging Paths \nJazz historians and scholars often point to 1959 as a watershed year. Indeed\, the volume and breadth of the music created in that single year has perhaps few analogues in jazz — or any other genre\, for that matter. During this program\, Professor Harel will therefore consider the critical and artistic impact of the seminal albums of 1959. In doing so\, he also discusses the trajectories pursued by the artists who made the year so special. Subsequently\, three distinct and markedly divergent directions can be analyzed. This discussion will consider them through the important works of three celebrated musicians: John Coltrane\, Miles Davis\, and Dave Brubeck. \nHarel (PhD\, Brandeis University) is a musicologist and music theorist whose interests include styles ranging from the western classical repertoire to jazz. Currently\, he is Full Professor of Music at CT State Naugatuck Valley\, where he received the AFT “Merit Award for Exemplary Service to the College” for 6 consecutive years. Indeed\, the iconic saxophone player and composer was featured prominently on Kind of Blue (the style of that record — modal jazz — would be one that Coltrane would revisit in subsequent years). Later in the year\, he recorded an album that would become one of the most influential in the genre: Giant Steps. The name of the album proved apropos. The unprecedented chord progressions and improvisational patterns leap rose Coltrane’s status to that of a legend. Even today\, multiple tracks on the record remain standard practice templates for aspiring saxophone players.
