SUMMARY:Garden Dialogues 2019: Wilton\, CT
DESCRIPTION:In 2019 the Cultural Landscape Foundation’s (TCLF) Garden Dialogues program\, which provides exclusive access to exceptional landscapes\, will go coast to coast\, from elegant estates in Greenwich\, Connecticut\, and waterfront retreats in Maine\, to one of the oldest zinfandel vineyards in California and other sites in Florida\, Maryland\, Massachusetts\, New York\, Virginia\, Washington State\, Washington\, D.C.\, and elsewhere. These projects have been designed by some of today’s most talented and visionary landscape architects. \nCider Ridge Farm is located on the outskirts of Wilton. The farm encompasses 16 acres of preserved meadows and a historic working orchard. An 18th-century agricultural lane with fieldstone walls runs along the ridgeline of the property\, creating a purposeful divide between the site for a new homestead and the existing agrarian landscape. Two phases of work defined this project. The first\, a new home for a young and growing family on the south side of the property; the second\, the comprehensive restoration of the original 19th-century homestead on the northeast corner of the site. \nThe landscape architecture firm\, STIMSON\, worked closely with the owners to create a multi-generational homestead that expressed the contemporary needs of the modern family\, while preserving the integrity of the historic farm. Principals Stephen Stimson\, FASLA and Lauren Stimson\, ASLA will lead the design discussion and share how the juxtaposition of old and new\, rustic and modern\, became a guiding language for the materials\, planting palette and overall landscape expression of the project. \nOld Farm\nThe historic farmhouse dates back to the mid 1700s\, with connections to the Revolutionary War and stories of British troops staying overnight. Over the last century\, the farm raised horses and historically\, race horses. The careful siting of the birthing stalls on the New York side of the property meant the horses could be part of the New York racing circuit. The historic farm lane remains the landmark that organizes the site\, dividing the farm between Connecticut and New York. The stonewalls that define the lane were carefully restored and new openings were created at key moments to provide views and connections between the two homes. A new court\, a reclaimed bluestone terrace and a working garden of raised beds were integrated into the historic home. A series of walls around the old farmhouse were rebuilt using site fieldstone\, and define the original formal tea lawn. \n \nNew Farm\nThe new farm landscape was conceived as a series of outdoor rooms adjacent to the house\, with a working kitchen garden and perennial garden stepping up to the historic lane. The garden is a collection that reinterpret the site’s meadows\, selected for seasonal display of color and texture. Above the gardens\, a new pool\, pavilion and play garden converge at the historic lane\, carefully inserted between fragments of the historic farm walls. The use of rusted steel\, granite and reclaimed stone respond to the site’s heritage\, yet also express the Owners’ affinity for modern art and architecture. These materials also carry forward the property’s legacy\, in the hands of the farmer\, they shaped this landscape for well over a century. \n \nManagement\nMaintaining a legacy property like Cider Ridge Farm requires a great deal of planning\, effort and expertise. Burt Demarche\, President of The LaurelRock Company who constructed the project with STIMSON\, will join the dialogue to discuss landscape strategies\, curation and long-term management at the Farm. \nAttendees will enjoy a take-home harvest basket from Cider Ridge Farm’s bountiful kitchen garden. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Summer Choral Concert: Dvorak's Te Deum and Mass in G
DESCRIPTION:Music on the Hill is pleased to present its 17th Annual Summer Chorus with the choral music of Czech composer Antonin Dvorak on Thursday\, July 25 . Works will be his Te Deum (Op. 103) and the Mass in D Major (Op. 86)\, both written in the 1890s as Dvorak turned his eye towards America and his time here. These treasures are not frequently performed and so provide a special experience for singers and audience alike to explore and celebrate his style and compositions. Strings\, brass and timpani will accompany the full chorus. \nThe concert will be at the St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church\, from 8-9:30 p.m. on Thursday July 25. A suggested donation of $20/person is suggested but not required. We welcome all who appreciate gorgeous choral works. \nQuestions? Contact artistic director Ellen Dickinson via email or call 203.529.3133. \nMusic on the Hill’s Summer Chorus of 60-plus voices meets each July to rehearse and perform a major choral-orchestral work. Participants–music professionals and skilled amateurs–include members of church and community choirs\, high school singers\, and those looking for a choral home. The Summer Chorus provides an opportunity for choral singers to perform a major work in summer when most choruses do not meet\, and it gives singers a chance to get to know others from many area towns and choruses.

SUMMARY:Historical Society Talk & Reception: "Beyond The Garden–Trees Can Be Herbs"
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that birch leaves can be used medicinally to treat gastrointestinal ailments and sore muscles\, and as a tea to treat gout–plus the cambium wood layer can be cut into strips and boiled to create edible “birch noodles”? The leaves and bark of willow are a source of salicin/salicylic acid\, the predecessor of aspirin\, for fever reduction and pain relief. Other common trees including pine\, beech and dogwood have herbal qualities\, as well. \nOn Thursday\, Aug. 1 from 4:30-5:30 p.m.\, master gardener Dana Weinberg will present an informal “talk and touch” titled “Beyond the Garden–Trees Can Be Herbs” at the Wilton Historical Society. She will be sharing her extensive knowledge of birch\, willow and many other trees that provide much more than shade and beauty in the garden. The talk will be followed by a reception in the beautiful Colonial Herb Garden. \nWeinberg has gardened enthusiastically for most of her life and received her Master Gardener Certification from the University of Connecticut in 2016. Her other interests including cooking\, baking\, floral decoration\, and a wide variety of studio art endeavors. She volunteers extensively at the Bartlett Arboretum in Stamford\, where she has helped to catalog the fern garden\, designed and led classes on Arbor Earth Day\, and spent hour after hour weeding and mulching. Weinberg holds a B.A. in studio art and psychology from the University in Virginia. She lives in Stamford with her husband\, and they have two adult children. \nThe event includes questions and answers\, and a wine and cheese reception; free for Wilton Historical Society members\, $10 for non-members. Please register by calling 203.762.7257 or via email.

SUMMARY:Food Truck Festival–Trackside Teen Center Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:Wilton will feed its collective belly\, as Trackside Teen Center will feed its financial need\, all with the 2nd Annual Wilton Food Truck Festival\, scheduled for Saturday\, Aug. 17. The community event has quickly become one of the organizations largest fundraisers\, something organizers say is especially needed to help with center’s financial challenges and a severe budget deficit. \nUp to 20 food trucks will return to Miller-Driscoll School on Aug. 17 from 11 a.m.-7 p.m.; in addition to a wide variety of meals on wheels\, the event will feature local musicians\, kid friendly entertainment and over a dozen vendors to delight and entertain attendees throughout the day. \nEntry is $10 per car. \nTrackside Teen Center\, as a private non-profit\, is the uniquely valuable place for Wilton teens. The center provides free drop-in hours after school and runs a number of programs ranging from arts to improv\, gaming to self-esteem development for pre- teens and teens in grades 6–12. As a safe place that is not home\, and not school\, organization official call Trackside the ‘in-between’–where pre-teens and teens can come to socialize\, explore new interests\, meet new friends and most importantly just be themselves in a supervised environment.

SUMMARY:CT United Ride to Roar Through Wilton this Weekend
DESCRIPTION:This Sunday\, Sept. 8\, the CT United Ride\, to support 9/11 first responders and their families\, will pass through Wilton. Now in its 19th year\, the ride is Connecticut’s largest 9/11 tribute. Danbury Rd./Rte. 7 northbound in Wilton will be closed to traffic as the motorcycle procession\, led by the Connecticut State Police\, proceeds through town from approximately 11:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m.. More than 3\,000 motorcycles and 5\,000 riders are expected to pass through on the route in front of 20\,000-plus spectators in 10 towns. \nWilton Police and Wilton CERT members will be on hand to assist closing intersections. Anyone who needs to travel during this time should make alternate arrangements to avoid Rt.7 between Westport Rd. north to Rt.107 in Georgetown. \nThe CT United Ride is an annual tradition remembering those who lost their lives during the terrorist attack in 2001. The ride also fundraises for firefighters and law enforcement officers throughout the state. \nThe route winds through Norwalk\, Westport\, Wilton\, Redding\, Bethel\, Monroe\, Newtown\, Trumbull\, Fairfield and Bridgeport. Riders are often dressed in patriotic red\, white and blue and carry American Flags on motorcycles that stretch out over miles\, and it usually takes up to 45 minutes for the entire line of riders to pass through Wilton. \nThe first year’s ride was staged as a fundraiser for New York City following the attacks at the World Trade Center. Now\, proceeds from the donations from riders supports Connecticut law enforcement\, firefighters and two United Way organizations. Riders and passengers pay $30 apiece to participate. \nRoute 7 northbound will be closed to traffic other than the CT United Ride\, for the duration of the motorcade. Riders are expected to enter town at approximately 11:45 a.m. traveling north. It is anticipated that the motorcade will last for approximately 45 minutes\, leaving Wilton at approximately 12:30 p.m.. \nDuring this time access to sections of Rte. 33 (Westport Rd.) and Route 7 (Danbury Rd.) will be restricted. Specifically\, adjacent streets on the east side of Rte. 7\, north of the Rte. 7 and Westport Rd. intersection\, will not be able to enter Rte. 7. In addition\, adjacent streets on the west side of Rte. 7 will be restricted to entering Rte. 7 in a southbound direction only. Wilton Police officers along with members of Wilton CERT will be staged at all major intersections along the motorcade route to assist with traffic. Wilton’s safety officers ask motorists to plan travel arrangements accordingly. \nPolice also say that spectators are urged to pick a safe location to view the motorcade. With plenty of parking available at the tennis courts and Wilton High School\, plus accessible sidewalks\, watching the motorcade between School Rd. and Wilton High School is an optimal spot. There’s typically a large American flag held aloft by a cherry picker aerial truck over Rte. 7 at that intersection.

SUMMARY:Woman's Club Invites All to First '19-'20 Meeting with Free Fall Fashion Show
DESCRIPTION:A Fall Fashion Show kicks off the Wilton Woman’s Club new year on Monday\, Sept. 9 at 10 a.m.\, at the WEPCO complex (48 New Canaan Rd.). The fashion show event is free for all Wilton women\, current members\, and those interested in learning more or joining the club. \nRefreshments will be served\, and there will be plenty of time to meet new friends and mingle with old. \nMembers of the Woman’s Club will be modeling the latest fall style featuring clothes from local boutiques ‘B’ Chic\, Blue Star Bazaar\, Open House\, and Snappy Gator. On hand for hair touch-ups and makeup will be Janet Montalbano of Let’s Make Up Wilton. Attendees will be able to chat with Janet and other experts from the stores on the newest trends. \n“At Blue Star Bazaar we try to balance current trends with comfortable\, classic\, flattering styles that always work\,” says Megan Abrahamsen\, owner of Blue Star Bazaar. “Some of the must-have trends and pieces for this fall include animal prints (from leopard to reptile); cozy\, plush textures in pullovers and sweaters; long pleated skirts; and faux fur–from jackets to accessories.” \nOpen House has a different take on the season. “We are not tied to the current fashion trends. Instead\, we shop the market looking for pieces we know our customers will love\,” says the store’s Leslie Hueglin. “This season is all about comfort while still looking stylish. Basic bottoms paired with a new sweater or top will take you from the school pickup line to drinks with friends.” \n‘B’ Chic owner Erica Malhotra\, just celebrated 13 years in Wilton and the eighth year in a row her store was named “Best Jeans in Fairfield County\,” so naturally she’s excited for fall and it officially being jeans season.  “We carry styles that are effortlessly chic and comfortable. Big this season is the crop flare and the high-waist straight leg in a vintage wash–AKA the “Mom” jean. Boot-cut is back\, and black-coated jeans are on-trend for evenings out.” \nSnappy Gator has great looks from their fall season lineup\, from casual to cocktail and a stylist to help with every detail. \nDuring Monday’s meeting\, the Woman’s Club executive board will also preview the 2019-20 social events\, including a fall trip\, holiday shopping night\, holiday luncheon\, a wine/chocolate event in February and a spring outing in May. All of this culminates in the club’s Annual Fashion Show Fundraiser in April. Last year’s Spring Fundraiser raised $28\,000 for the Wilton Land Conservation Trust and their project\, Save 183 Ridgefield Road. \nCommunity Service chairs Suzy Curtice and Wendy Nadel will outline numerous ways club members can get involved. These include stocking the Wilton Social Services food pantry; serving seniors lunch at Ogden House; sorting donations at Person-to-Person Clothing Center in Darien; helping clients shop at the Person-to-Person food pantry in Norwalk; as well as preparing meals for delivery to homebound Wilton residents over the holidays. \nMoms and daughters can also find opportunities to volunteer together through the Woman’s Club Junior Leadership Program\, such as helping out with Minks to Sinks\, and assembling and delivering Thanksgiving and Holiday meals to Wilton seniors. \nMembership in the Wilton Woman’s Club offers many ways to give back to the community and help serve others in Wilton and the surrounding towns. For more information about the club’s activities and membership visit the Woman’s Club website.
