SUMMARY:“Longest way round is the shortest way home”:  Four-Part Lecture Series on James Joyce’s 'Ulysses'
DESCRIPTION:Mark Schenker of Yale College\, returns to Wilton Library with a virtual lecture series on James Joyce’s Ulysses viewed through the lens of Homer’s epic. While James Joyce’s Ulysses (1922) differs significantly from Homer’s Odyssey (8th century BCE)\, they are intimately joined in the depiction of a homeward journey that is extended and delayed by incidents variously mundane and momentous. In each case\, the final homecoming is informed by all that has transpired to bring the hero back to where he first set out. \nThere is no charge for the program. This lecture is made possible with the support of the Literary Series in Memory of Amy Quigley. Advance registration is required. Register online in order to receive the Zoom session invitation link. Sally studied Italian language and culture at Georgetown University’s School of Languages and Linguistics and the University of Florence\, Italy. For more than 20 years\, she has been a member of the International Association of Culinary Professionals and teaches “homestyle” Italian cooking in her adult and children’s classes. DESCRIPTION:on Tuesday\, Oct. 13\, starting at 7 p.m.\, to hear and see the candidates running for State Senate 26th District and State House of Representatives 143rd District\, as they answer questions submitted by Wilton voters. \nThe event is being brought to you by GOOD Morning Wilton\, Wilton Library\, and the Wilton League of Women Voters.  \nThere will be two debates. The first forum will match up Will Haskell (D) and Kim Healy(R/Independent) for State Senate 26th District\, from 7-8 p.m. The second forum features Stephanie Thomas (D/Working Families) and Patrizia Zucaro (R/Independent) for State House 143rd District from 8:30-9:30 p.m. \nThe debate sessions will follow a modified town hall format moderated by Marianne Pollak of the Stamford LWV\, who will present questions submitted by the public to the candidates. \nBoth debates will be live-streamed from Wilton Library’s Brubeck Room. Please note:  following current protocols there will be no live audience in the building. \nThe WLWV is soliciting questions ahead of the debates via email. Questions for Haskell/Healy will be accepted until 7:15 p.m. and questions for Thomas/Zucaro will be accepted until 8:45 p.m. There are some important guidelines for submitting questions: \n\nanonymous emails will not be accepted\nonly one question can be submitted per email\nall questions must be applicable to all candidates and pertinent to state issues\nquestions targeted at one specific candidate will not be accepted.\n\nAll questions will be screened for legibility\, duplication\, and may be combined or condensed.

SUMMARY:“Longest way round is the shortest way home”:  Four-Part Lecture Series on James Joyce’s 'Ulysses'
DESCRIPTION:Mark Schenker of Yale College\, returns to Wilton Library with a virtual lecture series on James Joyce’s Ulysses viewed through the lens of Homer’s epic. While James Joyce’s Ulysses (1922) differs significantly from Homer’s Odyssey (8th century BCE)\, they are intimately joined in the depiction of a homeward journey that is extended and delayed by incidents variously mundane and momentous. In each case\, the final homecoming is informed by all that has transpired to bring the hero back to where he first set out. \nThere is no charge for the program. Online registration is required. \nConstituents will be able to submit written questions upon registration with Westport Library via email and thereafter up to the day of debate. Consistent with League guidelines\, constituent questions will be screened by LWV (one screener from each major party) for clarity\, non-duplication\, and applicability to both candidates. \nThe LWV is a non-partisan organization that encourages informed and active participation in government\, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues\, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. DESCRIPTION:Kids in kindergarten through high school are invited to join this virtual chess class at Wilton Library. Each week students will learn new strategies and then pair up using Chess.com to practice playing. Students must create a chess.com username prior to the start of class. \nRegistration is required for each session (Oct. 6\, 13\, 20 & 27)\, no fee. \nMatthew Shirvell is the instructor for this class. He has been teaching chess for over five years\, from new learners to experienced tournament players. DESCRIPTION:The Arts at St. Matthew’s–Digital Concert Series\nFor tickets and details visit the Arts at St. Matthew’s website or email with questions. \nSt. Matthew’s Episcopal Church‘s artist in residence Scott Ellaway and the Arts at St. Matthew’s are pleased to announce a very innovative and exciting three-concert digital series. The concerts will be broadcast over Zoom with the first on Wednesday\, Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. In these 50-minute concerts\, Ellaway will introduce you to composers that may be new to you as well as some you know well. In addition\, the concert audience will be invited to ask the musicians questions via Zoom chat. \nThe Oct. 21 concert will feature the American composer Nico Muhly through a performance of “Set Me as a Seal” followed by a performance of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 by musicians from Orchestra Europa\, of which Scott is artistic director. \nOn Feb. 24\, 2021\, Ellaway will introduce us to the music of Leonard Bernstein through his beloved Chichester Psalms. We will also hear “Notturno” composed by Michael Tilson Thomas. Musicians for this program will be drawn from the Vienna Philharmonic as well as Orchestra Europa. \nThe final concert on May 12\, 2021\, will feature the British composer Patrick Gowers with his “Viri Galilaei” and a performance of “Four Organs” by Steven Reich. Musicians from the London Symphony will join Orchestra Europa for our final program. \nThese concerts promise an evening of enlightenment and enjoyment for the audience and a chance to support future events by the Arts at St. Matthew’s. \nTickets are $25 with a reduced price of $10 for seniors and students. A 10% discount for series subscribers is available. Children 13 and under are free. For a $250 contribution\, patrons will receive a ticket as well as access to scheduled rehearsals throughout the season.
