SUMMARY:Free Presentation: A Parent’s Guide to Psycho-Educational and Neuropsychological Evaluations
DESCRIPTION:Navigating the evaluation process can be overwhelming. As a parent\, you want to advocate for your child\, but the steps to access support — whether through school or privately — can be confusing. Understanding the results of the assessment is critical\, yet parents may leave feedback sessions feeling uncertain about what the findings mean or what to do next. Rothman will also explain how to interpret the results and offer guidance on how to use that information to pursue the appropriate supports and services for your child. \nRegister for this free\, in-person presentation online. \n\n\nPresented by SPED*NETr in partnership with Wilton Library\, Wilton Public Schools and Newtown Sped PTA

SUMMARY:Parenting in Partnership: Blending Perspectives and Perceptions for More Strategic Parenting
DESCRIPTION:Being the parent of a child with special needs is often a confusing\, frustrating and deflating experience. The different experiences each parent has with their children can contribute to quite different perspectives on how best to guide them. \nIt’s a struggle to parent from the same page when we sometimes question if we’re even in the same book. School psychologist David P. Sylvestro\, MA\, CSP\, will discuss how parents can work to better sync their parenting philosophies and policies to be on the same page. Topics include enhancing parents’ knowledge base related to their child’s overall profile\, practicing the language of effective conflict resolution and expanding their affective vocabulary — the language of emotions. \nThis free event is an in-person presentation. Register online. \nPresented by SPED*NET in partnership with Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton Library and Newtown Sped PTA.

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: What You Need to Know About Extended School Year (ESY)
DESCRIPTION:In order to maintain learned or emerging skills\, a child may need IEP services in addition to those that are provided during the regular school year. Each child’s PPT must determine which\, if any\, “extended school year” (ESY) services will be included in the child’s IEP and when those services will be provided. \nIn this webinar\, special education advocate Julie Swanson will discuss the factors that your child’s team should examine in order to determine eligibility for ESY and\, if eligible\, what those services may include. \nPresented by SPED*NET in partnership with Wilton Public Schools and Newtown Sped PTA. \nRegister for the webinar 0nline. \n

SUMMARY:Assistive Technology (AT): Many Possibilities to Consider
DESCRIPTION:Assistive Technology (AT) encompasses many possibilities when you look beyond AAC/communication. Wilton Library hosts Alescia Ford\, MS\, OTR/L\, ATP\, while she breaks down the three critical components of educational design: Universal Design for Learning\, Educational Technology\, and Assistive Technology. She discusses assistive technologies to enable participation\, improve curricular access (math\, reading\, writing\, executive functioning)\, and support inclusion. She also explains what AT looks like (from low-tech\, mid-tech\, to high-tech)\, when more is needed (consultation and evaluations)\, how to include AT in the IEP\, and why implementation planning is so important. \nFord is a certified occupational therapist and a nationally certified assistive technology practitioner. She evaluates students’ needs for AT; trains students\, educators\, and parents on implementation plans; develops district-wide competencies for AT processes; and consults on literacy support programming\, accessibility and Universal Design for Learning guiding principles. She owns Adapt & Learn\, a pediatric therapy service provider with clinic locations in Simsbury and Farmington. \nRegister for this free\, in-person presentation. \n

SUMMARY:Children with High(er) Functioning Autism — Instruction\, Services and Supports Covered by Insurance
DESCRIPTION:One of the best-kept secrets in the world of health insurance companies is that children (toddlers to 21) diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders qualify for significant amounts of services in their homes and communities. This could be up to 30 hours each week for several years\, with most of the services covered by insurance. The important question is: What would you want your children to learn and join if you had many hours of enrichment\, support and staff per week? \nIn this program sponsored by SPED*NET\, clinical psychologist and educational consultant Michael J. Weiss\, PhD\, will discuss some of the most important instructions your children need and how to get it covered by insurance. He will describe a curriculum aimed at children on the spectrum who have good verbal skills\, yet struggle with behavior and socializing with peers. The instruction ranges from promoting an understanding of nuanced and symbolic language (e.g.\, idioms\, fables) to following conversations and storylines (TV/movie/story reading “therapy”) and teaching about other people’s perspectives\, thoughts and feelings (called “Theory of Mind”). In addition to the instruction\, a key curriculum goal is to connect kids to socialize together\, with close staff supervision.

SUMMARY:A Parent’s Guide to Executive Functioning
DESCRIPTION:Is your child struggling with daily routines and tasks? Do simple tasks take them an excessive amount of time or often go unfinished? Are you frequently asking them to focus\, calm down\, or hurry up? \nIf so\, your child may be having difficulties with executive functions — the mental processes that enable planning\, memory\, task initiation\, completion\, and emotional regulation. These skills are crucial for independent success both in and out of school\, yet they’re often overlooked in child development. \nAt this program hosted by SPED*NET\, Jeffrey Ruggiero\, an educator with over 30 years of teaching and administrative experience in special education\, will provide valuable insights and tools to help your child thrive\, including an in-depth understanding of executive functions\, practical strategies to support your child’s development\, and hands-on activities to reinforce learning. He currently serves as associate head at the Southport School. \nFor parents of children K-8th grade. Register online.

SUMMARY:Collaborative Problem Solving® (CPS): How to Recognize and Solve Problems That Cause Challenging Behavior
DESCRIPTION:SPED*NET in partnership with Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton Library and Newtown Sped PTA presents a discussion to inform parents of children with challenging behaviors. \nKids with challenging behaviors are often misunderstood and mistreated. Rewards and punishments sometimes make things worse. Helping these kids requires understanding why and when they struggle in the first place. \nThe Collaborative Problem Solving® (CPS) approach is based on the understanding that kids do well if they can. Unlike traditional models of discipline\, CPS avoids the use of power\, control\, and motivational procedures. It targets reducing challenging behavior by teaching at-risk kids\, from toddlers through young adults\, the skills they lack and building relationships with the adults in their lives. \nCPS was developed by Think:Kids\, an internationally recognized program led by Dr. Stuart Ablon (Mass General Hospital Dept. of Psychiatry). The CPS model\, originally described by Dr. Ross Greene in his book The Explosive Child\, has been further developed and described for clinical populations in several books\, including Treating Explosive Kids\, by Greene and Ablon\, and Changeable\, by Ablon. \nDivinna Schmitt\, MEd\, was trained in CPS with Greene and received her CPS Certification with Ablon. Since then\, she has taught parents and caregivers how to apply this life-changing approach at home. \nIn this presentation\, Schmitt will guide parents through the principles and skills-building of CPS\, including:\n1. Understanding why a child sometimes struggles to meet day-to-day expectations;\n2. Identifying triggers to a child’s challenging behaviors as well as identifying skills that a child needs help developing;\n3. Addressing conflicts in a way that reduces challenging behaviors\, improves relationships\, and teaches critical skills;\n4. Dealing with problems before a behavior situation becomes escalated; and\n5. Building skills such as flexibility\, frustration tolerance\, and problem-solving. \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:How School Interventions Affect Your Kids Who Are Wired Differently
DESCRIPTION:Children with autism\, non-learning verbal disorders (NVLD)\, or ADHD have two things in common: their brains process differently from those of other kids and they are often traumatized in school. \nSchools traditionally focus on kids’ behavior\, instead of on the experiences that led to such behavior. This is especially true if their actions distract other children. However\, children who are not accomplishing work “at the level of their potential” or are “oppositional” or “noncompliant” may be doing the best they can. Negative feedback only discourages them and leads to a sense of frustration and shame. Parents also often feel helpless when trying to get schools to better understand their kids. \nClinical psychologist Marcia Eckerd\, PhD\, and therapist Robert Bernstein\, MA\, will discuss why it’s critical for schools to focus on “what’s the child experiencing” in order to genuinely understand their behavior and help them succeed. \nRegister online. \nA video recording of this event will also be available online. \nPresented by SPED*NET in partnership with Wilton Library\, Wilton Public Schools and Newtown Sped PTA

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Jennifer Wallace - Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic - and What We Can Do About It
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library for an Author Talk by Jennifer Breheny Wallace\, who will discuss her New York Times bestseller Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic – and What We Can Do About It – which features the Wilton community! \nIn the ever more competitive race to secure the best possible future\, today’s students face unprecedented pressure to succeed. They pack their schedules with AP classes and resume-padding activities\, while family incomes and schedules are stretched to the breaking point by tutoring fees and athletic schedules. Yet this drive to optimize performance has only resulted in skyrocketing rates of anxiety\, depression\, and even self-harm in America’s highest achieving schools. In Never Enough\, award-winning reporter Wallace investigates the deep roots of toxic achievement culture\, and finds out what we must do to fight back. \nWallace draws on interviews with families\, educators\, and today’s leading child psychologists as well as an original survey of nearly 6\,000 parents. Through this deep research\, Wallace shows what kids need from the adults in the room is not more pressure\, but to feel like they matter\, and have intrinsic self-worth not contingent upon external achievements. Packed with memorable stories and offering a powerful toolkit for positive change\, Never Enough offers an urgent\, humane view of the crisis plaguing today’s teens and a practical framework for how to help. \nWallace is an award-winning journalist and social commentator covering parenting and lifestyle trends. She lives in New York City with her husband and their three children. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nThe media sponsor of our author talks is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nCo-sponsored by Wilton Library\, Wilton Youth Council\, and Thrive With A Guide. \nRegistration is required.  Register on the Wilton Library website.
