SUMMARY:Wilton Library — The College Process: How To Cope With Uncertainty And Support Your Teen
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an interactive discussion with clinical psychologist and parenting coach\, Susan Bauerfeld\, Ph.D.\, who will provide concrete strategies for coping with uncertainty and lower the stress level for both you and your teen as you navigate the college process together. \nUncertainty is but one of the many challenges that naturally accompany the college process. Yet the pressure associated with attempts to reduce and/or eliminate uncertainty often accounts for an inordinate amount of the stress. Add an ongoing pandemic\, with its own high levels of uncertainty\, and you’ve got a stressful challenge on steroids! But stress doesn’t have to run and/or define the show. This talk will show you how to shift away from trying to eliminate the uncertainty and toward coping with it. \nThis free event is intended for parents of 10th-12th graders. Co-sponsored by Wilton Library\, Wilton Youth Council and SPED*NET Wilton. For questions about the program\, or to submit a question to Dr. Bauerfeld in advance\, please send via email. Registration is required. Visit the Wilton Library website to register or call 203.762.6334.

Add an ongoing pandemic\, with its own high levels of uncertainty\, and you’ve got a stressful challenge on steroids! But stress doesn’t have to run and/or define the show. This talk will show you how to shift away from trying to eliminate the uncertainty and toward coping with it. \nJoin clinical psychologist and parenting coach\, Susan Bauerfeld\, Ph.D.\, for an interactive discussion. Following an overview of how and why worry’s goals of eliminating uncertainty and discomfort actually backfire\, Bauerfeld will provide concrete strategies for coping with uncertainty that can lower the stress level for both you and your teen as you navigate the college process together. \nThe presentation is appropriate for parents of 10th through 12th-grade students. \nWe hope to make a recording of this presentation available. More information to come. \nSponsored by Wilton Youth Council in partnership with Wilton Library and SPED*NET Wilton.

SUMMARY:SPED*NET: Put Your Oxygen Mask On First - Simple Parenting Tools for Complex Little Kids
DESCRIPTION:SPED*NET Wilton says that parents are of no use to their kids if they are overwhelmed. It’s crucial that parents keep in touch with their own physical\, mental and emotional pulse so they can provide the nurturing structure and guidance their children need. \non Thursday\, Oct. 14\, 9:30- 10:30 am\, School psychologist David P. Sylvestro\, MA\, CSP\, will discuss ways parents can keep themselves “steady and ready”— making sure their oxygen masks are properly on— by knowing how to recognize when their own stress levels may be interfering with their parenting goals and what to do when that happens. \nDave facilitates individual and group counseling sessions\, parent support groups\, and Dads-Only groups\, provides training and staff development to professionals\, and presents at LD conferences worldwide. He served as a school psychologist at Eagle Hill Schools for over 35 years and currently holds that position at The Southport School. Online registration for this webinar is required.

SUMMARY:How to Talk with Your Child’s Team: Effective Communication During the PPT/504 Process
DESCRIPTION:Difficult conversations can be unpleasant\, confrontational and provoking. A common fear is that an already challenging situation may get worse because of unresolved issues\, conflict or loss of trust among interested parties. When it comes to PPT or 504 meetings with parents and school personnel\, the stakes are often high: decisions made during these meetings can ultimately determine the educational services your child receives and the direction of his/her future path. \nIn this workshop\, Todd Kellogg\, LMFT\, BCBA\, a licensed behavior analyst and family therapist\, will discuss the importance of effective communication skills; how you\, as parents\, can become more emotionally self-aware during difficult conversations; how to avoid falling “heart first” into conflict with school-based teams; and how to forge collaborative relationships with school personnel despite disagreements and competing priorities. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Register on the SPED*NET Wilton website. \nCo-sponsored by Wilton Library\, Wilton SEPTA and Wilton Public Schools

SUMMARY:SPED*NET Wilton's First Webinar of the School Year: Strategies to Relieve Return to School Anxiety
DESCRIPTION:We’re all struggling to figure out our re-entry into society after the traumas of quarantine and distance learning. For students returning to schools and campuses\, reports confirm that 40-60% have mental health issues. How can we slow the dive into normalcy and let our kids with special needs know it’s okay to wade in slowly? \nIn this SPED*NET webinar\, Jane Thierfeld Brown\, EdD\, Director of College Autism Spectrum and former Assistant Clinical Professor at Yale Child Study\, will discuss the toll Covid-19 has taken on our kids and offer strategies to help lessen their anxiety\, boost their social-emotional wellbeing\, and make them feel more comfortable and confident as they venture back to their classrooms.

SUMMARY:Transition Planning and College Readiness
DESCRIPTION:SPED*NET Wilton is glad to welcome Jane Thierfeld Brown\, EdD\, in Part II of our webinar series\, Post High School and College Planning: Helping Our Students with Disabilities Prepare for Their Future and Find the Right Path. \nTransitioning from high school to college or employment can be difficult for any student\, but especially for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The structure and predictability provided in high school are gone. The social and academic supports these students may have relied on during their high school years are suddenly removed. The organization\, communication\, social\, and “life” skills required in a college or employment setting are heightened. Our role as “parent” changes legally when our “child” turns 18. For all these reasons\, it is important to encourage students with ASD to develop critical academic\, social\, and life skills while in high school so they can transition to college or employment successfully. \nIf you missed the first webinar with Dr. Brown\, you can view the recording online.

DESCRIPTION:Wilton Youth Council’s Free Play Matters Task Force presents a virtual screening of Chasing Childhood\, filmed in Wilton! Stream the movie for free anytime from Saturday\, April 17 through Wednesday\, April 21. \nChasing Childhood is a film about the unintended consequences of over-protecting\, over-pressuring\, and over-scheduling kids\, and the impact that has on their ability to thrive both in childhood and as adults. \nThe makers of this movie spent hours in Wilton\, filming in the schools\, on the athletic fields\, and in the homes of residents. Viewers will see familiar scenes from Wilton\, including insightful conversations in our elementary schools. Learn more about how Wilton is leading the way in shifting the culture of childhood and the movement to raise healthy\, resilient children. \n \nChasing Childhood Trailer from NYGrit on Vimeo. \nChasing Childhood was filmed before the pandemic\, but the issues explored are even more profoundly relevant today: what is the changing landscape of contemporary childhood and parenting? What is best for my kid? \nIn today’s childhood\, confined by structure\, stranger danger\, and helicopter parenting\, free-play has virtually disappeared. Experts are ringing the alarm bell about the dramatic rise in anxiety and depression in young children and teens. What if all this well-intended hovering\, fear and over-scheduling has backfired? \nJoin a virtual Q&A with the director and some of the experts and subjects of the film on Thursday\, April 22 at 7 p.m. Q&A panelists include: \n\nEden Wurmfeld\, Director and Producer of Chasing Childhood\nLenore Skenazy\, President and Founder of Let Grow\nDr. Michael Hynes\, Superintendent of Schools\, Port Washington\, NY\nGenevieve Eason\, Executive Director of Wilton Youth Council\nSavannah Eason\, Wilton High School ‘13\n\nThe Q&A will be moderated by Vicki Abeles\, the director and producer of Race to Nowhere and Beyond Measure. \nRegister online. \nSponsored by Wilton Public Schools and Wilton Youth Council.

SUMMARY:Breaking Free of Child Anxiety and OCD Book Club (6th-12th Grade)
DESCRIPTION:4Wilton Youth Council\, Kim Zemo LCSW\, and Vanessa Elias Certified Parent Coach will host a Zoom book club to discuss Dr. Eli R. Lebowitz’s groundbreaking book and ways parents and caregivers can help alleviate their children’s anxiety by changing the way they themselves respond to their children’s symptoms. \nBreaking Free of Child Anxiety and OCD: A Scientifically Proven Program for Parents by Eli R. Lebowitz\, PhD is the first and only book to provide a completely parent-based treatment program for child and adolescent anxiety.  Parents will learn how to alleviate their children’s anxiety by changing the way they themselves respond to their children’s behavior. Instead\, parents are shown how to replace their own accommodating behaviors (which allow anxiety to flourish) with supportive responses that demonstrate both acceptance of children’s difficulties and confidence in their ability to cope.  From understanding child anxiety and OCD\, to learning how to talk with an anxious child\, to avoiding common traps and pitfalls (such as being overly protective or demanding) to identify the ways in which parents have been enabling a child’s anxious behaviors\, this book is full of detailed guidance and practical suggestions. \nEmail with the subject “Register for 6th-12th Book Club” to register.

SUMMARY:Healthy Connections: An Inside Scoop on Adolescents and Addiction
DESCRIPTION:New experiences and relationships are essential for helping our tweens\, teens and young adults develop appropriately and reach their full potential. As parents\, we may be concerned that our kids are changing too quickly – or that their panoply of experiences will be harmful\, especially when they involve alcohol and drugs. \nIn this presentation and conversation\, Anthony Nave\, LCSW\, will explain: how our adolescents’ social\, emotional and brain development can increase their risk for substance abuse/use disorders; what signs of struggle to look out for; how to start a conversation about drugs and alcohol; and what resources are available\, if further help is needed. Nave will also discuss misconceptions surrounding addiction and the contemporary “medical model” of addiction. \nNave\, a licensed clinical social worker with master’s degrees in Educational Psychology and Clinical Social Work\, serves as Senior Manager\, Outpatient Services\, at Mountainside Treatment Center. He is advanced certified in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)\, is currently an EMDR Consultant-in-Training\, and is experienced in medication-assisted treatment\, co-occurring disorders\, and adolescent programming. Prior to joining Mountainside\, he taught in an alternative therapeutic school\, where he helped youth with mental health and cognitive disorders. At Mountainside\, Nave designs curricula for clinical programming and incorporates neurobiology and a trauma-responsive framework into one-on-one counseling\, group therapy\, family sessions\, and supervision. At home\, he enjoys pretending to be superheroes with his sons and rooting for the Red Sox and Patriots. \nRegister online.
