SUMMARY:Healthy Connections:  An Inside Scoop on Adolescents and Addiction
DESCRIPTION:New experiences and relationships are essential for helping our tweens\, teens and young adults develop appropriately and reach their full potential. As parents\, we may be concerned that our kids are changing too quickly – or that their panoply of experiences will be harmful\, especially when they involve alcohol and drugs. \nIn this presentation and conversation\, Anthony Nave\, LCSW\, will explain: how our adolescents’ social\, emotional and brain development can increase their risk for substance abuse/use disorders; what signs of struggle to look out for; how to start a conversation about drugs and alcohol; and what resources are available\, if further help is needed. Nave will also discuss misconceptions surrounding addiction and the contemporary “medical model” of addiction. \nNave\, a licensed clinical social worker with master’s degrees in Educational Psychology and Clinical Social Work\, serves as Senior Manager\, Outpatient Services\, at Mountainside Treatment Center. He is advanced certified in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)\, is currently an EMDR Consultant-in-Training\, and is experienced in medication-assisted treatment\, co-occurring disorders\, and adolescent programming. Prior to joining Mountainside\, he taught in an alternative therapeutic school\, where he helped youth with mental health and cognitive disorders. At Mountainside\, Nave designs curricula for clinical programming and incorporates neurobiology and a trauma-responsive framework into one-on-one counseling\, group therapy\, family sessions\, and supervision. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Susan Bauerfeld\, PhD\, licensed clinical psychologist\, and Chris Parrott\, BPS\, chartered counseling psychologist–two popular speakers on the topic of managing the impact of digital devices and content. \nTechnology is a tool that’s here to stay and social media platforms are places to connect\, share and care. But what’s really happening? \nFifty-seven percent of all teens agree that using social media often distracts them when they should be doing homework. Twenty percent of teen drivers say they check notifications while driving\, at least sometimes. SUMMARY:Wilton YMCA Free Parent Workshop:  Tools for Working with Anxiety
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Wilton Family YMCA\, this free parent workshop\, “Tools for Working with Anxiety\,” will introduce practical tools to interrupt the anxiety loop by purposefully cueing an activation of our parasympathetic nervous system. Using mindful awareness\, breath\, and body we will explore ways to shift our nervous systems from a state of “fight\, flight\, or freeze” to a place of “rest and digest.” \nThe workshop is presented by Jennifer Barrett\, who has been working with children for over two decades. She is the founder of We Grow Yoga and provides yoga and mindful awareness training to children of all ages as well as to the teachers and parents who guide them. She holds degrees in elementary and special needs education from Boston College. She has a 20 year dedicated yoga practice\, and is an active and registered member of Yoga Alliance. She is certified both through ChildLight Yoga and holds a 200 hour teacher certification through Breathe For Change with the lens of bringing yoga and mindful awareness practices to school communities. DESCRIPTION:State Representatives Gail Lavielle (R-143) and Tom O’Dea (R-125) invite residents of Wilton and New Canaan to participate in a discussion on youth vaping on Thursday\, Nov. 21. from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Trackside Teen Center.
