SUMMARY:Hot & Cool Jazz: Venus & Mars featuring Roxy Coss and Lucas Pino
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library as husband-and-wife tenor-sax power-couple Lucas Pino and Roxy Coss make their debut as co-band leaders. The duo first met at a jam session in New York City in 2012\, joined as spouses in 2014\, became parents in 2021\, and now come together for the first time publicly in 2023 to present a set of music representing that journey. Venus & Mars is a modern jazz project and a counter-response to the old trope that “Men are from Mars\, Women are from Venus.” How do two woodwind players live together\, let alone perform together? Come find out! \nThe band will explore diverse arrangements from both musicians\, from the history of jazz from the 1930s all the way through today\, including some of their original compositions written for one another. The rhythm section joining this duo will feature some of the scene’s top rising stars: Mike King on piano\, Liany Mateo on bass\, and Dan Pugach on drums. \nHot & Cool Jazz is brought to you by the generosity of the Estate of James (Tom) and Alice Brown. \nThere is no for this event. A $10 donation is suggested. Wait-list spots only. Pre-registrants should arrive by 3:50pm to be guaranteed seating; wait-listed and walk-in registrants will be admitted after 3:50 pm if space is available. There will be a reception following the concert with CDs available for sale and signing. \nGRAMMY Award-winning musician\, composer\, bandleader\, recording artist\, educator and activist Roxy Coss has become one of the most innovative saxophonists on the scene. Winner of the 2022 Downbeat Critics’ Poll “Rising Star” category in soprano saxophone and an ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award\, Jazziz Magazine listed her an “Artist to Watch\,” and she received the Hothouse Magazine & Jazzmobile “Tenor Saxophone” Award. \nAward-winning musician and composer Lucas Pino has performed at some of the world’s most esteemed festivals and venues. As a tenor saxophonist and multi-woodwind player\, his unique and lyrical approach make him one of the most in-demand side musicians across generations. Lucas has notably performed with Dave Brubeck\, Christian McBride\, Takuya Kuroda\, Darcy James Argue\, Alan Ferber\, Samora Pinderhughes\, Nick Finzer\, and Jazz at Lincoln Center’s “Songs We Love\,” among others. \nRegister on the Wilton Library website.

SUMMARY:Hot & Cool Jazz: Chris Brubeck's Triple Play
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library on Sunday\, May 7 at 4:00 p.m. for the next Hot & Cool Jazz concert featuring Triple Play\, a trio of three outstanding and versatile musicians: Peter Madcat Ruth (on harmonica\, guitar\, jaw harp\, percussion & vocals)\, Joel Brown (folk and classical acoustic guitar and vocals)\, and Chris Brubeck (electric bass\, bass trombone\, piano & vocals). Collectively they bring a rare level of joy\, virtuosity\, and American spirit to the folk\, blues\, jazz and classical music they perform. \nHot & Cool Jazz is brought to you by the generosity of the Estate of James (Tom) and Alice Brown. \nWait-list spots only. Pre-registrants should arrive by 3:50 p.m. to be guaranteed seating; wait-listed and walk-in registrants will be admitted after 3:50 p.m. if space is available. There will be a reception following the concert with CDs available for sale and signing. \nTriple Play’s musical roots go way back (50+ years!) in each member’s history. Brubeck and Ruth have toured and recorded together in different settings since 1969\, first as young rock musicians in the group “New Heavenly Blue” (with albums on RCA and Atlantic Records)\, “Sky King”(on Columbia)\, and then as jazz musicians touring the world with Dave Brubeck. Paul deBarros\, writer for The Seattle Times and Downbeat\, commented after seeing a performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival: “Triple Play is what jazz always was and always should be about: good-time rhythm\, unbridled joy and the sweet release but bittersweet aftertaste of the blues.” \nDave Brubeck’s last recorded performance was captured on the exciting “Triple Play Live at Arthur Zankel Music Center.” The crowd is wildly enthusiastic on this well-reviewed CD\, which also featured Joel Brown’s father\, Frank Brown on clarinet. You can often hear this innovative version of “Take Five” featuring Ruth’s polyrhythmic jaw harp and burning solos by Dave\, Joel and Chris on Sirius XM Jazz. Triple Play’s music has international reach\, as they were a hit playing with The Singapore Chinese Orchestra and returned for a second performance\, which was recorded and released on Blue Forest Records. “It all fits together because of the talent and taste of the musicians\, who groove no matter what they’re doing — and it’s tremendous fun\, to boot\,” said All About Jazz. \nRegister on the Wilton Library’s website.

SUMMARY:Wilton Reads: Songs of Ships & Sailors
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library in the Brubeck Room for a unique concert featuring arrangements from Songs of Ships & Sailors\, a songbook written by the Castlebay Singers and published in 2021. The book contains over 160 songs gleaned from the many hundred songs they found in archives at the Maine Folklife center\, the Library of Congress\, the Helen Hartness Collection\, and several others. Julia Lane and Fred Gosbee interpret these songs with their own artistic skill\, making them attractive and available to a modern audience while retaining historic integrity and weaving in commentary relevant to the song and its provenance. \nSince 1986\, Castlebay has been weaving together Maine’s nautical and British Isles legacies\, transporting their audience through time and across the Atlantic. Lane and Gosbee have loved and researched traditional music for most of their lives and blend history\, legend and experience into their personable performances. Rich and exuberant renditions of traditional and original songs are supported with Celtic harp\, 14-string guitar\, fiddle & woodwinds. Castlebay has toured the Eastern US and Canada\, United Kingdom\, Ireland\, and Kosovo. \nRegistration is required. Register on the Wilton Library’s website or call 203.762.6334.
