SUMMARY:Block Party 101 — Building Community One Block at a Time
DESCRIPTION:Curious about organizing a neighborhood block party? Join Vanessa Elias\, founder of Block Party USA\, a national movement dedicated to strengthening communities by helping neighbors connect through block parties – microlocal neighborhood gatherings. Block Party 101 is a low-stress introduction to planning a simple and joyful neighborhood gathering. Learn the why and the how-to with all the essential steps — and discover how just one block party starts the block party “ripple effect\,” strengthening connections\, fostering belonging and creating “the village” that we all need. Specific to families\, it provides opportunities for much-needed neighborhood free play for kids\, jobs for tweens and teens\, and a network of support — right outside your front door. \nWhether it’s your first event or looking for fresh ideas\, you’ll leave with practical tips\, resources and the confidence to bring your neighbors together. Whether you’re in a house\, an apartment\, rent\, own\, live alone\, a busy parent or a retiree — this one’s for you. \nDuring this presentation\, attendees will learn: \n\n Why social connection is essential for healthy families and communities\n The surprising impact of block parties on safety\, resilience\, belonging and civic engagement\n Practical how-to steps and guidance for organizing successful neighborhood gatherings\n How local residents can participate in Block Party USA’s American Summer Campaign\, in celebration of America’s 250th\n\nElias is a human connection and mental health activist\, as well as certified parent coach featured in the Wall Street Journal\, NPR\, PBS and in the New York Times best-seller Never Enough. She serves as a parent support group facilitator for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). She founded Block Party USA as a free\, simple\, and actionable cure for our country’s loneliness\, social isolation\, divisiveness and the youth mental health crisis. Block Party USA is featured as a resource by the U.S. Surgeon General to build social connection and by The Anxious Generation to restore the play-based childhood.  \nRegistration required. Walk-ins welcome as space allows.

SUMMARY:Shakespeare on the Sound's Romeo and Juliet
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for a special program just in time for Shakespeare on the Sound’s annual summer production of Romeo and Juliet in Rowayton’s Pinkney Park (June 12-June 30). This is their 28th year presenting Shakespeare’s plays outdoors. \nFun Facts About Romeo And Juliet:\n– Romeo and Juliet first meet on a Sunday evening. Four days later — on Wednesday evening — Romeo drinks poison and Juliet stabs herself. “Worst week ever\,” as one Shakespearean scholar puts it.\n– Juliet is 13 years old. Romeo’s age is unknown.\n– Dante first mentions the feud between the families in the early 1300’s.\n– In 1662 Mary Saunderson made stage history as the first woman to play Juliet\, 150 years after London audiences first saw Shakespeare’s play with a boy playing Juliet. \nShakespeare on the Sound Education Director and Macbeth/Christmas Carol actor Nick Urda and board member/Shakespeare teacher John Love guide audiences through Romeo and Juliet and\, in an interactive presentation\, hope to exemplify why Juliet and Romeo might be a more fitting title for the play. They’ll also incite the question: were they really in love? \nRegistration is suggested online or call 203.762.6334.

SUMMARY:Wilton Playshop Auditions
DESCRIPTION:Wilton Playshop will hold auditions for It’s Only a Play (2014 Broadway script edition) on Sunday\, November 26 and Tuesday\, November 28 at 7:00 p.m. Callbacks will be held on November 30 at 7:00 p.m.  The show will run February 9 – February 24\, 2024. \nIt’s Only a Play by Terrence McNally is a comical play about theater. Playwright Peter Austin anxiously awaits the reviews of his new play after opening night. With his career on the line\, he shares his big First Night with his “best” friend\, a television star\, his novice producer\, his doped-up diva\, his genius but crazed director\, a lethal drama critic\, and a fresh-off-the-bus coat check attendant on his first night in Manhattan. It’s alternately raucous\, ridiculous and tender—and proves that sometimes the biggest laughs happen offstage. \nAuditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Looking for versatile actors with great comic timing who are adept at physical comedy. For role descriptions\, visit the Wilton Playshop website.

SUMMARY:Shakespeare on the Sound: As You Like It
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library for a special program just in time for Shakespeare on the Sound‘s annual summer production of As You Like It in Rowayton’s Pinkney Park\, June 14 through July 2. It’s their 27th year presenting Shakespeare’s plays outdoors. \n“Do you not know I am a woman? When I think I must speak.” \nFun Fact: In Shakespeare’s romantic comedy As You Like It\, the heroine Rosalind has more lines than any other female character in all of Shakespeare: more lines than Cleopatra or Juliet\, more than twice as many lines as Lady Macbeth. In As You Like It\, Shakespeare’s version of Into The Woods\, we have not two\, not three\, but four romantically challenged couples wandering the forest of Arden. Without Rosalind\, they would never find each other\, much less true love. Shakespeare wrote As You Like It at the peak of his career\, right before Twelfth Night and Hamlet\, and it has been an audience favorite ever since. \nShakespeare on the Sound Education Director and Macbeth/Christmas Carol actor Nick Urda and board member/Shakespeare teacher John Love will guide you through As You Like It and\, in an interactive presentation\, hope to show you why they consider Rosalind Shakespeare’s greatest heroine and As You Like It his most interesting comedy. \nTo register and see more details\, visit the Wilton Library’s website.

SUMMARY:Storytelling through Puppetry\, Quilt Codes and Writing Out Loud: A Celebration of Wilton Reads
DESCRIPTION:There are many ways to tell Wilton’s stories\, both real and imagined\, including puppetry\, quilt codes and “writing out loud”. With a nod to well-known Wilton children’s book authors and illustrators like Ingri and Edgar D’Aulaire\, Johnny Gruelle\, E. Boyd Smith\, and Lillian Hoban\, Wilton Historical Society presents “Spring Into Wilton’s Stories!” on Saturday\, May 7 from 2 – 4. The family-focused afternoon will feature the marvelous Adelka of Sova Dance and Puppet Theater\, who will perform two original\, interactive puppet shows loosely based on stories by Wilton children’s book authors and illustrators. Kids will be able to join in a puppet making activity and learn about other ways stories are told. Skilled demonstrator Candiss Cowan will show how special patterns in quilts – “quilt codes” – were an important way to guide enslaved people to freedom via the Underground Railroad\, and explain the stories hidden in the designs. Kids can try their hand at a quilt code activity\, too. Josh Shelov of Written Out Loud will be on hand to add to the storytelling fun. His interactive workshop sparks creativity through collaborative “writing out loud” which he will present in a fun game show style format. Josh is an Emmy-winning screenwriter and filmmaker who has made multiple films in Hollywood\, and teaches storytelling at Yale. \nPuppet shows will take place in the Abbott Barn at 2:30 and 3:30. \nEvent admission: Free for Wilton Historical Society members; Non-members $10 per person\, adult or child. \nPuppetry is Storytelling!\nAdelka Polak is founder and artistic director of Sova Dance & Puppet Theater\, based in Connecticut\, mainly serving schools\, arts venues and community organizations in New England and NYC\, including recent performances at Madison Square Park and Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Polak is a dancer\, puppeteer\, mask-performer and movement director whose work has brought her to Denmark\, Bulgaria\, the Czech Republic\, Taiwan\, Scotland and Turkey. She was featured on CPTV’s “Spotlight on the Arts” with Masque Theatre and Larry Hunt in a segment nominated for a cultural Emmy in 2010. \nPolak shares her knowledge of dance\, puppetry and crossing artistic disciplines with audiences across the U.S. and abroad. She has worked with children across CT to make more than 5\,000 frog puppets since 2016 mainly through Hartford Performs. She also teaches with Z. Briggs and the Jim Henson Foundation in a contract with the VSA Kennedy Center program in order to train educators how to use puppetry in the classroom. She has worked as a professional puppeteer for nearly two decades. \nQuilts are Storytelling!\nBefore the Civil War\, more than 100\,000 enslaved people escaped to safety in the north via the Underground Railroad. This was an organized group of abolitionists and already escaped slaves who risked their freedom and their lives to bring others to freedom. But how to communicate with potential travelers who could not read? How to guide them? One way was through the use of quilts and the codes in their patterns. Quilt designs or blocks all have names that are used universally. These names have meaning. Quilt blocks were made into signs and maps to help lead the enslaved to freedom. Some purist historians say this is just “folklore” because it was never “proven”. Quilters will tell you that the fact that it was never proven is exactly the point. The quilts were such clever designs that no one could prove how they were being used. They were “Hidden in Plain Sight”. \nWriting is Storytelling!\nOriginally taught as a seminar at Yale University\, and now\, mentored by Hollywood and publishing professionals\, Written Out Loud combines group brainstorming sessions with individual writing missions. Kid’s writing skills will grow by leaps and bound\, along with courage\, collaborative spirit\, and empathy. \nJosh Shelov\, founder and CEO of Written Out Loud\, is an Emmy-winning screenwriter and filmmaker who has made multiple films in Hollywood\, starring Neil Patrick Harris\, Amy Sedaris\, Elijah Wood\, and others\, as well as multiple ESPN “30 for 30” documentaries. He has taught storytelling as an adjunct professor at Yale. Some of his favorite authors and illustrators are Ingri and Edgar D’Aulaire of Wilton and their stories of Greek and Norse mythology!
