SUMMARY:Domestic Violence Awareness Month Proclamation
DESCRIPTION:First Selectwoman Lynne Vanderslice will read a Proclamation for Domestic Violence Awareness Month on Tuesday\, Oct. 8\, at 9 a.m. at Wilton High School. \nMembers of the Wilton Domestic Violence Task Force\, Wilton Police\, Teen PeaceWorks and other officials will be there. The event has usually been held at Town Hall\, but this year has been moved to a new location at Wilton High School in front of the flagpole (corner of Catalpa Rd. and Kristine Lily Way) in order to include some of the student population. \nTraditionally the members of the Teen PeaceWorks group have tied purple ribbons around trees in Wilton Center–the same number as the number of domestic violence calls received by the Wilton Police for that year. Instead\, the task force will use purple pinwheels to represent the number of calls this year.

DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Domestic Violence Task Force\, Wilton Teen PeaceWorks and Wilton Library are co-hosting “Is Your Daughter Safe? The Her-Self Awareness Lecture” about safety for young women\, and featuring the mother of a teen girl murdered in CT. \nDonna Cimarelli\, CEO and co-founder of the Maren Sanchez Foundation\, is the mother of Maren Sanchez\, a Milford\, CT teenager who died after being stabbed by an obsessed classmate in 2014. \nThis presentation\, “Her-Self Awareness Lecture” trains young people on how to use situational awareness to identify pre-incident indicators that can result in dangerous situations. The presentation also provides strategies on how to be an informed and active bystander to thwart what could potentially be a dangerous situation. The goal is to teach young women and girls how to trust and follow their instincts and pay attention to that gut feeling. \n The lecture on Thursday\, Oct. 10\, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Wilton Library\, is for teens\, parents\, grandparents and other members of the community to have the opportunity to hear Cimarelli’s story and benefit from her wisdom. DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Police Department will be offering tours of its facility on Saturday\, Oct. 19\, between 9 a.m.-1 p.m.. Members of the community are welcome to stop by anytime during these hours for a tour. \nThe tours are being offered in conjunction with the work of the Police-Town Hall Building Committee that has been charged with studying the deficiencies and needs of the police headquarters and recommending a cost effective solution to the Board of Selectmen. SUMMARY:Wilton Police Host 'Coffee with a Cop' Community Gathering
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, Dec. 18\, officers from the Wilton Police Department and community members will come together in an informal\, neutral space to discuss community issues\, build relationships\, and drink coffee. \nAll community members are invited to attend “Coffee with a Cop.” The event runs from 8-10 a.m. at Tusk and Cup (142 Old Ridgefield Rd.). \nCoffee with a Cop provides a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about the department’s work in Wilton neighborhoods. \nThe majority of contacts law enforcement has with the public happen during emergencies\, or emotional situations. Those situations are not always the most effective times for relationship building with the community\, and some community members may feel that officers are unapproachable on the street. Coffee with a Cop breaks down barriers and allows for a relaxed\, one-on-one interaction. \nCoffee with a Cop is a national initiative supported by The United States Department of Justice\, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Similar events are being held across the country\, as local police departments strive to make lasting connections with the communities they serve. \nThe program aims to advance the practice of community policing through improving relationships between police officers and community members one cup of coffee at a time.

Some of the prestigious awards include Medal of Honor\, Medal of Valor\, Meritorious Police Service\, Police Officer of the Year\, and Community Police Officer of the Year. \nChartered in 1982\, the Wilton Rotary Club has raised and returned $750\,000 to the Wilton Community\, and to those in need\, around the world. Wilton Rotary is one of 35\,000 Rotary Clubs in 200 countries across the globe. The Club meets every Friday at 12:15 p.m. at Rolling Hills Country Club. DESCRIPTION:Wilton Library and Wilton’s Police and Fire Departments present a special online program on disaster preparedness and what you need to think about and do before the next major weather event. \nIn the aftermath of Tropical Storm Isaias\, it’s essential for people to think through how to prepare for future storms. The presenters\, Police Chief John Lynch and Fire Chief Geoffrey Herold\, will give the audience their experience-based advice as well as provide a checklist of important steps to take in advance of a major storm. They will also explain how best to cope with different kinds of weather events while they are happening and how to stay safe in a storm’s aftermath. \nOnline registration is required in order to receive the Zoom invitation link. Questions may be emailed in advance to Michael Bellacosa. The audience also will be able to submit questions using Zoom’s chat function at the end of the presentation.
