SUMMARY:Teaching Autistic Children: A Way That Works for Parents
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for another important SPED*NET presentation on Wednesday\, Apr. 29\, at 10:30 a.m. at the Wilton Library. Robert J. Bernstein\, an educational and behavioral therapist\, will discuss ways to help your child engage\, assimilate new information\, and develop new thoughts and behaviors. \nWe want our autistic children to live happy and successful lives. Many parents\, however\, often approach their kids with an agenda: instead of offering acceptance and approval\, they want their child to do something differently—to change. Consequently\, autistic kids frequently feel that who they are is not who people want them to be. They end up hiding their authentic nature and keeping up a façade. \nRob Bernstein has been working with children on the autism spectrum for over 35 years. His book Uniquely Normal: Tapping the Reservoir of Normal\, including first place for “Parenting Family” from the New Generation Indie Book Awards. His newest book is Uniquely Normal Manual: Using the Bernstein Cognitive Method for Autism (Future Horizons\, 2023). Rob has a personal link to autism\, having grown up with an autistic brother and as the parent of an autistic son. His family experience led him to train in developmental psychology and education\, the knowledge base that underlies his cognitive method for working with autistic children. He is well established with a media presence through his podcast\, monthly webinars that he runs for the US Autism Association and his YouTube channel with Marcia Eckerd\, Everything Neurodiversity. His work has been featured on Dateline and in the New York Times. Rob has presented dozens of workshops and keynote addresses at both national and international conferences. He is an international consultant working with autistic children and special education PTA groups across the United States\, the United Kingdom\, and India. He is on the Board of Directors of ARC and the US Autism Association. \nPresented by SPED*NET in partnership with Wilton Library\, Wilton Public Schools\, Easton CT SEPTA and Newtown Sped PTA. \nRegister at: https://wilton.librarycalendar.com/event/hold-spednet-31172 \n  \n

Working with towns and individuals to improve energy efficiency\, conservation\, and clean renewable energy across Connecticut\, PACE provides outreach and education on clean energy issues at public events\, legislative hearings and environmental forums. \nMark Scully has long been interested in clean energy\, energy efficiency and recycling. He has served as President of PACE since 2016 and recently introduced its Clean Energy Action Center. A native of Simsbury\, Mark is active in his local Sustainability Committee. In 2005\, he founded the Portland\, CT\, Clean Energy Task Force\, which he continues to Chair. Andy became Coordinator of the CT Energy Network in 2024 and hosted a 2025 press conference at the legislature\, highlighting the many necessary aspects of CT’s Public Benefits Charge. When not out ‘saving the planet’\, he’s a farmhand\, a carpenter\, a hiker\, and a speaker to Leaders-in-Training at his beloved YMCA Camp Woodstock. \nRegistration is required for this event and will close on Mar. 14\, 2026\, at 12:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:Wilton Historical Society Documentary Screening: The Hidden History of Slavery in New York
DESCRIPTION:The Hidden History of Slavery in New York digs deeply into an infamous chapter in our country that hasn’t always made its way into the history books. The film features Bryan Stevenson\, founder of the Equal Justice Initiative\, and explores how the Transatlantic trade of enslaved people was centered in the north\, not the south\, in the 17th and 18th century — with New Amsterdam as its epicenter — and Wall Street as its largest market. Journalist Larry Epstein wrote\, produced and researched the project\, which won an award at the 67th annual NY Emmy Awards. \nOn Thursday\, Jan. 22\, at 7 p.m. at the Wilton Historical Society\, Epstein will present this film along with a Q&A session afterwards. \nEpstein is a two-time Emmy award-winning documentary and news producer\, journalist\, writer\, anchor and corporate copywriter. He is a former executive producer at MSNBC and former senior-level producer at the Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network. \nSpace is limited and registration is required. The cost to attend is $10 per person for non-members\, free for Wilton Historical Society members.

SUMMARY:Free Presentation: Calm First\, Learn Later (A Regulation Roadmap for Parents)
DESCRIPTION:For parents of children ages 4-12 (elementary and middle school). \n\n\nWhen kids are dysregulated — whether they’re melting down\, shutting down\, or just plain stuck—it can feel impossible to reach them\, let alone help them learn. The truth is\, kids can’t access logic\, focus\, or problem-solving until they feel safe and regulated. \n\n\nIn this engaging and practical talk\, special education teacher Charlie Del Santo will discuss simple\, proven strategies to support children through stress\, shutdowns and big emotions\, so they can return to a place where listening\, learning and connection are possible. \nParticipants will leave this presentation with: \n\nA clear understanding of what’s happening in your child’s brain and body during moments of dysregulation\nEveryday tools to use before\, during and after dysregulation to help your child reset\nA ready-to-use “parent toolbox” of calming phrases\, routines and supports for home\n\nMore About Charlie Del Santo \n\n\nPresented by SPED*NET in partnership with Wilton Library\, Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton Youth Council and Newtown Sped PTA

SUMMARY:Free Presentation: A Parent’s Guide to Psycho-Educational and Neuropsychological Evaluations
DESCRIPTION:Navigating the evaluation process can be overwhelming. As a parent\, you want to advocate for your child\, but the steps to access support — whether through school or privately — can be confusing. Pediatric neuropsychologist Yael Rothman\, PhD\, will discuss reasons for seeking an evaluation\, what is typically assessed\, and how evaluations may differ depending on the setting. Understanding the results of the assessment is critical\, yet parents may leave feedback sessions feeling uncertain about what the findings mean or what to do next. Rothman will also explain how to interpret the results and offer guidance on how to use that information to pursue the appropriate supports and services for your child. \nRegister for this free\, in-person presentation online. \n\n\nPresented by SPED*NETr in partnership with Wilton Library\, Wilton Public Schools and Newtown Sped PTA

SUMMARY:Victorian Mourning Customs Lecture
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, Oct. 23\, at 7 p.m.\, historian and award-winning costumer Jess Bolduc will\nlead a lecture on the customs and traditions of Victorian mourning at the Wilton Historical\nSociety. \nIn the 19th century\, grief was expressed through carefully observed rules of dress\, etiquette\, and memorial practices that shaped how families navigated loss. From mourning clothing and jewelry to expectations placed on widows and children\, these customs reflected both personal sorrow and wider cultural values. Drawing on both scholarly research and hands-on experience with period attire\, this lecture will provide insight into how Victorians approached death and remembrance\, offering a clearer understanding of daily life\, social expectations\, and the ways mourning helped define an era. The lecture will include historical examples from the museum’s collection. \nAdmission is $10 per person for non-members\, free for Wilton Historical Society members. \nRegistration is required. Register online or by email.

SUMMARY:Wilton Go Green Presents: Totally Obsessed with "Kelp!"
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Go Green to watch Kelp!\, a 30-minute documentary and then hear from Dr. Leigh Shemitz about kelp in local waters. \nAbout Kelp! the documentary: Under the looming shadow of ecological breakdown\, a young filmmaker searches for a surprising super-solution that can help build a better future for humans and the planet. On an epic adventure aboard the good ship Gleaner through Britain’s rugged coastline\, they discover the power of kelp to regenerate our coasts\, empower communities and even replace plastic. \nAfter the film Shemitz\, president of SoundWaters\, will share what it is like to grow kelp locally\, just a few miles away. SoundWaters has farmed kelp in Long Island Sound for several years\, and Shemitz will explain what it takes to grow kelp\, including the timing and process and the challenges and successes. She will discuss the environmental benefits of kelp farming: how it can improve water quality and provide key nutrients for upland farms in our region. \nShemitz is the president of SoundWaters\, where her responsibilities include setting strategic direction\, developing programs\, creating partnerships\, overseeing operations and managing the SoundWaters staff and budget. Shemitz’s extensive background in environmental science provides enormous depth and breadth as she helps SoundWaters fulfill its mission to inspire future generations to create a better world through joyful learning on Long Island Sound. Shemitz currently serves on the board of directors of the Stamford Environmental Protection Board and the Bartlett Arboretum and Gardens\, and is an emeritus board member at the New Haven Urban Resource Initiative. Shemitz earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and literature from Harvard University; and a Master’s degree in forest science and a Ph.D. in environmental health\, both from Yale University. \nRegistration is suggested.

SUMMARY:Author Talk with Wilton First Selectman Toni Boucher: The Husky Effect
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library on Friday evening\, Apr. 25\, for a special author talk program with Wilton’s First Selectman Toni Boucher as we celebrate the publication of her first book\, The Husky Effect: How UConn is Creating the Entrepreneurs of the Future\, a deeply personal story of entrepreneurship and ingenuity as well as a thoughtful exploration of the spirit of innovation that’s flourishing in the University of Connecticut School of Business\, inspired by the national champion UConn Huskies men’s and women’s basketball teams. \nIn The Husky Effect\, Boucher — a selectman\, former Connecticut state legislator\, executive\, and UConn School of Business alum — lays out a recipe for entrepreneurs of any age to reach for their dreams. Boucher explores the stories of her father\, who brought her family to the United States when she was a little girl\, and her late husband\, Bud\, both of whom\, despite risks and failures\, never gave up until they found success. That dogged determination and the incredible success of Bud’s businesses allowed Toni to name the Boucher Management and Entrepreneurship Department at the UConn School of Business in his honor. The Husky Effect is a deep dive into UConn’s innovative approaches to teaching entrepreneurship and the key figures who are reshaping the curriculum to emphasize hands-on experience\, emotional intelligence and a multidisciplinary approach. \nPraise for The Husky Effect \n“The Husky Effect takes readers inside the bold initiatives — cutting-edge\, hands-on learning in venture investing and groundbreaking research in entrepreneurship — that are equipping the next generation of trailblazers.”  — Greg Reilly\, Interim Dean\, UConn School of Business \nBoucher is serving her first four-year term as the first selectman of Wilton after a lengthy career in public service for the state of Connecticut\, including in the CT State Senate and CT House of Representatives. Boucher recently retired from her career in the private sector as director of a leading $30 billion asset management company. She has an MBA from UConn\, has founded several startups\, and is now helping the UConn School of Business grow its entrepreneurship and student-run investment programs. Toni is a 40-year resident of Wilton and has three children and six grandchildren. \nCopies of The Husky Effect will be available for purchase and signing after the program. \nRegistration for this program is requested. SUMMARY:Victorian "Get Ready With Me": A 19th Century Fashion Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Modern fashion influencers invite viewers to “get ready with me” — an opportunity for an inside look at their wardrobe choices and styling for days at the office\, Sunday brunch\, dinner dates and more. While no social media existed in the late 19th century\, people considered a balance of form\, function and social expectations when putting together an outfit. \nOn Saturday\, Apr. 19\, at 2 p.m.\, join the Wilton Historical Society for a lecture from historical costume designer and fashion historian Jessica Bolduc as they discuss what it took for someone in the Victorian era to get dressed and ready for the day. The lecture will cover the evolving nature of fashion throughout the second half of the 1800s using examples from the Wilton Historical Society’s museum collection as well as recreations from Bolduc. \nFunding for this program is provided by the Elizabeth Raymond Ambler Trust. \nThe lecture will be held at the Wilton Historical Society. Registration is required\, and the cost to attend is $10 per person for non-members and free for Wilton Historical Society Members.

SUMMARY:Challenges and Legal Issues for Students with ADHD and/or Learning Disabilities who are Transitioning to College
DESCRIPTION:Despite their intelligence and enormous potential\, students diagnosed with ADHD and learning disabilities face continual difficulty addressing transitions. None prove more difficult than the transition from high school to college. What makes this transition difficult is a variety of social and legal changes that many students and parents are not equipped to address. This puts them at high risk to fail\, despite their high potential. If addressed proactively\, however\, the challenges of this transition can be reduced dramatically so these students can have the opportunity to maximize their potential\, and not just survive in the post-secondary environment but to thrive there. \nRobert M. Tudisco\, Esq.\, a nationally recognized author\, motivational speaker\, practicing attorne\, and adult diagnosed with ADHD\, will address many of the social and legal changes that occur with the transition to college and discuss practical strategies for students to reach their full potential. His presentation will include such topics as: IEPs and making the most of transition planning; converting 504 plans to reasonable accommodation requests in college; high stakes testing accommodations; understanding FERPA and proactively addressing the flow of information; developing strategies to provide structure\, support and accountability while away at school; and diversion of medication and what parents and students need to know. \nRegister online for this free presentation.

SUMMARY:Parenting in Partnership: Blending Perspectives and Perceptions for More Strategic Parenting
DESCRIPTION:Being the parent of a child with special needs is often a confusing\, frustrating and deflating experience. The different experiences each parent has with their children can contribute to quite different perspectives on how best to guide them. \nIt’s a struggle to parent from the same page when we sometimes question if we’re even in the same book. School psychologist David P. Sylvestro\, MA\, CSP\, will discuss how parents can work to better sync their parenting philosophies and policies to be on the same page. Topics include enhancing parents’ knowledge base related to their child’s overall profile\, practicing the language of effective conflict resolution and expanding their affective vocabulary — the language of emotions. \nThis free event is an in-person presentation. Register online. \nPresented by SPED*NET in partnership with Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton Library and Newtown Sped PTA.
