SUMMARY:MOVIE SCREENING: "Like" – The Impact of Social Media On Our Lives
DESCRIPTION:Join a coalition of child development and education organizations for a screening of LIKE\, a new IndieFlix original documentary film that explores the impact of social media on our lives. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Susan Bauerfeld\, PhD\, licensed clinical psychologist\, and Chris Parrott\, BPS\, chartered counseling psychologist–two popular speakers on the topic of managing the impact of digital devices and content. \nTechnology is a tool that’s here to stay and social media platforms are places to connect\, share and care. But what’s really happening? \nFifty-seven percent of all teens agree that using social media often distracts them when they should be doing homework. Twenty percent of teen drivers say they check notifications while driving\, at least sometimes. And 57% of teens say that if parents knew what happens on social media\, they’d be a lot more worried about it. \nSo\, are we addicted? How do we stop? Where do we start? What do we need to know? By understanding the effects of technology and social media on the brain\, on our lives and on our civilization\, we can learn how to navigate it more safely together. \nThe goal of the documentary film LIKE is “to inspire people of all ages\, especially kids\, to self-regulate. It’s not about blame. It’s about looking in the mirror and empowering ourselves to create balance in our lives and to learn to be there for each other.” \nPlease email Genevieve Eason with questions. \nSponsored By:  Fusion Academy Fairfield\, SPED*NET Wilton\, Wilton High School PTSA\, Wilton Public Schools and Wilton Youth Council

SUMMARY:Wilton Library/Historical Soc. Scholarly Series: Jazzed Up–The History of Jazz in America\, Reggie Quinerly Lecture
DESCRIPTION:In the 13th year of the collaboration between Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society\, the scholarly lecture series focuses on the theme of “Jazzed Up: The History of Jazz in America.” \nIn this lecture\, Reggie Quinerly addresses the factors\, influences and artistic offerings associated with the unique period in America’s history that was the Harlem Renaissance. \nDuring the 1920s\, the African-American enclave of Harlem was the epicenter of a deep cultural transformation. This movement acknowledged and utilized the artistic expression of many brilliant thinkers. The impact of this Renaissance was widespread and became the essential crucible from which a new generation emerged. \nQuinerly grew up in a rich musical environment in Houston and graduated from the Mannes School of Music at New School University where he got to study with three great drummers:  Jimmy Cobb\, Lewis Nash\, and Kenny Washington. After some time honing his chops on the scene\, he returned to school earning his Master’s in Jazz Studies at the prestigious Juilliard School. He has played with such leading artists as Wynton and Branford Marsalis\, Joe Lovano\, Chico and Von Freeman\, and Greg Osby. In 2017\, he fulfilled a life-long goal of returning to higher education\, this time as a Juilliard faculty member and in the summer of 2019\, he joined the faculty at Hunter College. He holds a Supervisors certification and Vice-Principal and Principal certifications in Education. He is a member of Percussive Arts Society and the New Jersey Education Association. \nThe moderator is Steve Hudspeth. \nThe series is sponsored by Charles Schwab & Co.\, Inc.; the media sponsor is The Wilton Bulletin. A reception will follow the talk. No charge but donations are always welcomed. Registration (online) is required for each lecture individually. The event is full with a waitlist. \n

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Melissa Clark–Dinner in French: My Recipes by Way of France: A Cookbook–CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED \nThe New York Times star food writer Melissa Clark breaks down the new French classics with 150 recipes that reflect a modern yet distinctly French sensibility in Dinner in French. \nA Q&A will follow the talk. There is no charge to attend but registration highly recommended. Register online or call 203.762.6334. Book signing and purchase will be available courtesy of Elm Street Books of New Canaan. The media sponsor is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nJust as Julia Child brought French cooking to twentieth-century America\, so now Clark brings French cooking into the 21st century. She first fell in love with France and French food as a child; her parents spent their August vacations traversing the country in search of the best meals with Melissa and her sister in tow. Near to her heart\, France is where Melissa’s family learned to cook and eat. And as her own culinary identity blossomed\, so too did her understanding of why French food is beloved by Americans. \nNow\, as one of the nation’s favorite cookbook authors and food writers\, Melissa updates classic French techniques and dishes to reflect how we cook\, shop\, and eat today. With recipes such as Salade Nicoise with Haricot Vert\, Cornmeal and Harissa Soufflé\, Scalloped Potato Gratin\, Lamb Shank Cassoulet\, Ratatouille Sheet-Pan Chicken\, Campari Olive Oil Cake\, and Apricot Tarte Tatin (to name a few)\, Dinner in French will quickly become a go-to resource and endure as an indispensable classic. \nMelissa Clark is the author of Dinner\, Dinner in an Instant\, and Comfort in an Instant and is a staff writer for The New York Times Food section\, where she writes the wildly popular food column\, “A Good Appetite.” The winner of multiple James Beard and IACP awards\, Melissa is the host of the “Weeknight Kitchen” podcast on The Splendid Table. Melissa earned an MFA in writing from Columbia\, and her work has been selected for the Best American Food Writing. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and daughter.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Jenny Graham-Hougah–CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED \nWeir Farm Art Center\, in partnership with Weir Farm National Historic Site and the Wilton Library\, present an Artist Talk with Jenny Graham-Hougah in the Rimer Room at the Wilton Library. \nHougah’s work focuses on objects in space\, and it describes how things interact with the living. In uncertain times\, she finds comfort in representing the world realistically. The polarized narratives that fuel debates leave marks and tensions in rooms and houses. She paints interior scenes and still-lifes that hint at\, or partially include\, the people that inhabit them\, and the interior lives they lead. \nWeir Farm’s Artist-in-Residence program (AIR) selects 12 artists to live and work at Weir Farm each year. To date\, over 200 artists from throughout the U.S.\, as well as Tunisia\, Germany\, Australia\, India and the Netherlands have participated in the AIR program. Visual artists apply for one month residencies in all media and diverse artistic points of view from traditional to experimental.

SUMMARY:Disaster Preparedness: Plan Ahead
DESCRIPTION:Wilton Library and Wilton’s Police and Fire Departments present a special online program on disaster preparedness and what you need to think about and do before the next major weather event. \nIn the aftermath of Tropical Storm Isaias\, it’s essential for people to think through how to prepare for future storms. The presenters\, Police Chief John Lynch and Fire Chief Geoffrey Herold\, will give the audience their experience-based advice as well as provide a checklist of important steps to take in advance of a major storm. They will also explain how best to cope with different kinds of weather events while they are happening and how to stay safe in a storm’s aftermath. \nOnline registration is required in order to receive the Zoom invitation link. Questions may be emailed in advance to Michael Bellacosa. The audience also will be able to submit questions using Zoom’s chat function at the end of the presentation. Visit the Wilton Library website to register.
