SUMMARY:College Frenzy: How to Manage and Minimize the Stress
DESCRIPTION:Presentation and discussion for students and parents led by Susan Bauerfeld\, PhD\, Clinical Psychologist\, Parent Coach and Victoria Hirsch\, College Consultant \nThe College Process has come to be viewed as “THE BIG EVENT” in the lives of students and their families. The pressure associated with THE BIG EVENT often creates a lot of negative fallout\, such as ruptured relationships and high levels of stress and anxiety. In this presentation\, parent coach and clinical psychologist Susan Bauerfeld\, PhD and college consultant Victoria Hirsch will offer tips\, strategies and suggestions for viewing the college process as a natural next step rather than THE BIG EVENT and for managing the process in ways that foster resilience and relationships rather than discord and despair. \nThis presentation is aimed at students and parents of students who are preparing for and/or actively applying to college. If you (or your child) are not yet in high school we suggest you relax and think about other things this year. That being said\, all students\, parents and other interested parties are welcome to attend. \nAdmission is free; online registration is recommended. Please email Genevieve Eason with questions. \nSponsored by:  Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton High School Counseling\, Wilton Youth Council\, and Wilton Youth Services

SUMMARY:Parenting Talk: Children Do Well When They Can–Identifying & Solving Problems That Cause Challenging Behaviors
DESCRIPTION:Parent presentation by Ross W. Greene\, Ph.D.\, author of The Explosive Child; Lost at School; and Raising Human Beings \nChildren do well when they can; when they can’t\, it is because of lagging skills and unsolved problems. All children have times when they struggle to handle life’s expectations. Whether a child responds by whining\, sulking\, or crying\, or in ways that are more concerning–hitting\, swearing\, or biting–the goal of parents and caregivers is to identify and solve the underlying problems that cause the behavior. \nJoin organizers to learn from child psychologist Ross W. Greene\, Ph.D.\, how to understand children’s challenging episodes\, identify unsolved problems and begin to solve problems. Dr. Greene is the originator of the innovative\, empirically-supported approach to children’s behavioral challenges known as Collaborative & Proactive Solutions. \nIn the 2018-2019 school year\, the Wilton Public Schools will be learning more about Dr. Greene’s model. The district has worked with Dr. Greene to create a plan to help teachers\, faculty\, administration\, staff\, and parents learn how to help students with effective self-regulation and problem-solving strategies. This will begin with keynote addresses for elementary\, middle and high school faculty on Oct. 8\, which is a professional development day for district staff. In addition to working with faculty\, Dr. Greene will also present to parents and other concerned adults to share this model with our community. \nAdmission is free; online registration is recommended. Please email Genevieve Eason with questions. \nSponsored by:  Wilton Public Schools\, SPED*NET Wilton\, Wilton Youth Council\, and Wilton Youth Services

SUMMARY:Walking Tour of Historic District #1\, Lambert Corner with Former 1st Selectman and Wilton Historian Bob Russell
DESCRIPTION:Join former First Selectman and Wilton historian Bob Russell on a walking tour of the Wilton Historical Society’s preserved buildings at Lambert Corner. To be held on Saturday\, Oct. 13 at 11 a.m.\, the hour-long guided tour of the site includes Lambert House\, formerly known as “Lilacstead\,” which was built on the site c.1726\, and eight other buildings moved there in order to preserve them–Lambert Cottage\, Kent District School\, Hurlbutt Street Country Store and Post Office\, Wilton Railroad Station\, Davenport Barn\, Cannon Family General Store\, 18th-century Cannon Family Corn Crib and the not-to-be-missed George Davenport Greek Revival Privy. The entire site comprises Wilton’s Historic District #1. The group will set out from the porch of the Historical Christmas Barn. All are welcome\, no charge. \nMr. Russell\, Wilton historian and author of Wilton\, Connecticut: Three Centuries of People\, Places\, and Progress\, will share some of the interesting stories of the people associated with the buildings. He may well recount the details from a chapter in his book concerning “the most sensational crime in Wilton’s history\, which took place in December 1897\, when the last Wilton member of one of the town’s most prominent families\, a quiet unassuming gentleman schoolteacher\, David S. Lambert\, was shot down in cold blood in his home\, the Lambert House.” \nThe buildings at Lambert Corner were moved to the site of the original Lambert homestead\, at the intersection of Routes 7 and 33\, over the past 40 years. Most of the buildings are now used as shops and offices. The Wilton Historical Society was a pioneer in what is now called adaptive use–historic structures which have been updated for contemporary use. The Society has rescued\, in total\, 18 buildings typical of a New England rural community on three campuses in Wilton\, all visible from Route 7. \nThe tour will end at noon at the Historical Christmas Barn store (150 Danbury Rd.)\, where cider and cookies will be served. Comfortable walking attire is suggested. \nWilton\, Connecticut: Three Centuries of People\, Places\, and Progress is available for purchase at the Wilton Historical Society’s museum shop\, the Betts Store. \nPlease register for this event by e-mail or call 203.762.7257; visit the Wilton Historical Society online.

SUMMARY:Stop The Bleed–Presented by Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps (WVAC) and Our Lady of Fatima (OLF)
DESCRIPTION:Today we live in a world where terrorism\, the actions of unstable people\, and the dangerous impulses of friends and relatives are very real and becoming increasingly more frequent. \nMassive bleeding from any cause\, but particularly from an active shooter or explosive event where a response is delayed can result in death. Similar to how the general public learns and performs CPR\, the public must learn proper bleeding control techniques\, including how to use their hands\, dressings\, and tourniquets. Victims can quickly die from uncontrolled bleeding\, within five to 10 minutes. \nHowever\, anyone at the scene can act as immediate responder and save lives if they know what to do. \nThe Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps is offering this FREE training to teens in cooperation with Our Lady of Fatima’s Youth Group. \nFAQs: \nAre there registration requirements? \nYes. It is important that each student be given adequate time and instruction with an instructor. We need to know in advance as to how many participants to expect\, to ensure we have enough supplies and instructors on hand\, thereby making advanced registration required. \nParticpants will be required to fill out a waiver that they should complete and bring to the event. This waiver will be sent to you via email after registering. Registration can be completed online. \nAre there any age restrictions for attending this class? \nDue to the nature of the content of this paticular class\, the participants should be at least 13 years of age. The target audience for this particular class is teens between 13-18 years old. \nIs there a cost associated with this event? \nNo. This training is offered free of charge as a service to the community by the Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps. That being said\, WVAC is 100% a volunteer\, non-for-profit 501(c)3 organization–and not a department within the Town of Wilton–which relies heavily on donations from the community. Donations are by no means a prerequisite for attending this course but should you so desire\, you will have the opportunity to donate when registering for the event through this site\, or at the event itself. \nWho can I contact with any questions? \nYou may contact Brian McDermott\, WVAC vice president and community events coordinator via email. Additionally\, Mara Fleming\, coordinator of Youth Ministry at OLF via email.
