SUMMARY:The Scoop on Psych Testing:  What do All Those Numbers Really Mean?
DESCRIPTION:Licensed clinical psychologist Caley Schwartz\, PhD will present an overview of common areas examined in psychological and psycho-educational testing\, including IQ\, achievement\, memory\, executive functioning\, social communication\, and development. She will discuss the significance of psych testing\, what information can be gained from it\, how to interpret the numbers you see in the reports\, and how important comprehensive recommendations based on the conclusions of the testing are for appropriate interventions and support services. \nDr. Schwartz earned a doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Miami and completed a two-year Fellowship at the Yale Child Study Center\, where she received generalist and autism-specific training. Upon completion of her postdoctoral training\, Dr. Schwartz became a faculty member within the Autism Program at the Yale Child Study Center. In addition\, she completed a certification in Clinical Issues in Adoption\, developed jointly by the CT Department of Children and Families\, the UCONN School of Social Work\, and Southern CT State University. Currently\, Dr. Schwartz is a Clinical Instructor at the Yale Child Study Center. \nIn her Ridgefield\, CT\, private practice\, Schwartz provides comprehensive psycho-educational and psychological evaluations\, as well as diagnostic evaluations requested by both parents and school systems. \nThe presentation is at 10 a.m.-noon at Comstock Community Center (180 School Rd.\, Wilton). DESCRIPTION:Come to a Wilton Historical Society presentation and book signing by author and historian Marty Podskoch discussing his new book\, The Connecticut 169 Club: Your Passport and Guide to Exploring Connecticut\, which includes a light lunch. The new travel book encourages travelers to visit all of the towns and villages of our beautiful and unique state. From the quaint splendor of the town of Kent in the northwest hills of Connecticut to the great restaurants that dot the shoreline of Westbrook to New Britain’s industrial roots\, to Wilton’s colonial past\, Podskoch has compiled little known facts and fascinating information about all 169 towns\, cities and villages in the State of Connecticut in the hopes of encouraging people to visit every one of them. \nJoin this informal “club” by getting out and about\, and taking the road less traveled! The book has a space for travelers to journal about their experiences and a place to get the book stamped or signed by a resident or business in each town. The reward for visiting all of Connecticut’s towns\, cities and villages will be a “Leatherman” patch which commemorates this legendary wanderer\, who during the late 1800s wore leather clothes and travelled a 365-mile circuit in approximately 34 days between the Hudson and Connecticut Rivers while camping out in caves. Podskoch will help organize a dinner in the fall of next year to honor those determined souls who have made it to every municipality\, all 169! During that event they will get their Leatherman keepsakes. “Anyone can attend\,” Podskoch says. “Members will share their stories and adventures.” It is worth noting that the Old Leatherman is well documented as visiting Wilton regularly\, and could be spotted at the Rock Lake Reservoir. \nThere is no membership fee\, just a desire to experience all of Connecticut. Adults and children of all ages can be members. What a great adventure for families\, grandparents\, and their grandchildren\, or go by oneself. Most members will travel by car while others might use a bike\, motorcycle\, or maybe a canoe! “It doesn’t matter what age people are or what means of transportation people use to get there\,” the 74-year-old Podskosh said. “The whole idea is to get people to see the many beautiful places in our state.” \nThe Connecticut guide book\, Podskoch’s ninth book\, entailed nearly two years of collaborative effort as he recruited Connecticut writers\, historians and officials. ­Each contributed a passage about their town’s histories\, haunts; favorite food fixes and historic landmarks. The Wilton chapter of the book was provided by Allison Gray Sanders\, co-director of the Wilton Historical Society. \nAfter Podskoch’s talk\, the book will be available for sale and signing. SUMMARY:WLA/WHS Scholarly Series – Sex\, Scandal\, and Upheaval: 1919 – What’s Changed? with Cecelia Bucki
DESCRIPTION:In the 12th year of the collaboration between Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society\, the scholarly lecture series theme is ‘Sex\, Scandal and Upheaval: 1919–What’s Changed?’ \nHistorian and author Cecelia Bucki\, Ph.D.\, will survey the domestic unrest that plagued the United States following the end of World War One. The Treaty of Versailles signaled the end of World War One but on the home front\, conflict continued. The Great War and its aftermath resulted in domestic repercussions such as general strikes\, labor unrest\, race riots\, and Palmer raids. Nationally and here in Connecticut\, peace remained elusive. This part of 1919 remains an untold part of 20th century U.S. history. \nBucki has taught American history at Fairfield University for more than 25 years. Her specialties within U.S. History are social\, labor and working-class\, and immigration history. She is the author of the award-winning Bridgeport’s Socialist New Deal\, 1915-1936 (University of Illinois Press\, 2001). SUMMARY:The Physiology of Addiction:   Effects of Drug-Taking Behavior on the Brain
DESCRIPTION:Ruth A. Potee\, MD will explain how substances and addictive behaviors impact the brain and how the brain is injured by prolonged exposure to these substances and behaviors. She will also address the risk and impact of addiction on adolescents with ADHD. \nShe will focus on the three predisposing factors putting individuals at risk for addiction:  genetics\, early exposure during brain development\, and history of childhood trauma. Dr. Potee will explore normal risk-taking behaviors of the developing brain\, as well as the impact of marijuana on the adolescent brain acutely and over time. DESCRIPTION:In the 12th year of the collaboration between Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society\, the scholarly lecture series theme is ‘Sex\, Scandal and Upheaval: 1919 – What’s Changed?’ Veteran sports writer Steve Wulf is at the plate with the story of the infamous cheating scandal that enveloped the 1919 World Series. \nOne hundred years ago\, the stage was set for the darkest drama in the history of baseball:  the Black Sox Scandal. Upset at the penny-pinching ways of White Sox owner Charles Comiskey\, and tempted by the riches promised to them by gamblers\, several members of the team conspired to help the Cincinnati Red Stockings win the 1919 World Series. \nWulf is a senior writer with ESPN\, where he has happily worked since 1997\, when he became one of the founding editors of ESPN The Magazine. SUMMARY:Holocaust Survivor Judith Altmann\, A Community Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Judith Altmann\, a Holocaust survivor and speaker for the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center\, returns to Wilton on Tuesday\, March 19 to share her story with the community. \nBorn in Jasina\, Czechoslovakia\, which was invaded by the Nazis in 1939\, Altmann was arrested in 1944 and transported to Auschwitz concentration camp with her niece\, where they were selected for work\, rather than sent to the gas chambers and death. From there she was moved to Essen and Gelsenkirchen Labour camps\, where she remained until March 1945\, and later survived the “death march” that ended in the Bergen Belsen concentration camp. Sick with typhus\, Altmann was barely alive when she was liberated by the British Army in 1945. She was given the opportunity to go to Sweden\, where she lived until emigrating to the United States in 1948. \nAltmann\, who has extensive experience speaking in schools\, is a member of the Holocaust & Human Rights Education Speakers Bureau\, and is vice president of the Holocaust Child Survivors of Connecticut. \nThis presentation follows Altmann’s visit to Middlebrook where she spoke to all of the students during two school-wide assemblies. Her message is one of hope and forgiveness\, encouraging her listeners to think for themselves and speak out against injustice.

DESCRIPTION:Milone & MacBroom will be holding two public meetings seeking feedback to be used in the development of a concept plan for the renovation of Schenck’s Island and Merwin Meadows. The meetings will be held on Sunday\, March 24 (1-3 p.m.) and Sunday\, April 28 (1-3 p.m.) at Comstock Community Center in the gym. The meetings are open to the public and no RSVP is required. If needed\, a snow date will be posted on the Town website. \nThe March 24 meeting will provide a brief overview of the sites and then focus on collecting feedback from participants on desired features and improvements at Schenck’s Island and Merwin Meadows. At the April 28 meeting\, Milone & MacBroom will present a summary of feedback gathered to date and will present a proposed concept plan for discussion and feedback. Wilton residents of all ages are encouraged to attend the meetings to provide feedback on what features and improvements they would like to see in the parks.

DESCRIPTION:Licensed clinical psychologist Mary Murphy\, PhD will discuss and demonstrate how biofeedback works. Biofeedback\, a promising treatment for ADHD\, anxiety and stress\, allows a person to learn how to monitor and change his or her body’s reaction to stressors. \nUsing a computer or smartphone\, biofeedback software allows you to monitor your biological responses\, such as breathing rates\, muscle activity\, and heart rate. The therapy process teaches you to notice changes in your body and ways to intervene to stop the body’s reactions that cause you to feel stress. It allows you to process information more efficiently\, to improve focus\, and to interrupt the process of fight-flight-freeze\, which causes distress to so many. \nOne of the most important benefits of Biofeedback is that it can be learned relatively quickly\, while working with a trained provider\, and has the goal of transitioning to independent use. \nDuring our demonstration\, Dr. Murphy will display sample biofeedback software (HeartMath) and show participants how to use common biofeedback apps at home. \nDr. Murphy is in private practice\, in Ridgefield\, CT\, at Insight Counseling\, where she specializes in counseling\, executive function/academic coaching\, psychological testing\, and biofeedback. Her counseling practice focuses on helping adolescents and adults affected by mood disorders\, neurological conditions\, and substance use. Dr Murphy completed advanced fellowship training at the Yale School of Medicine. SUMMARY:Statues\, Boulders\, and Monoliths:  The World War One Memorials of Connecticut Illustrated Talk by Richard Donohue
DESCRIPTION:As the First World War ended\, American communities such as Wilton hurried to memorialize the great efforts of their sons and daughters. Changes in cultural and civic ideals since the American Civil War led to extensive public discourse about what memorials should and should not be. Government leaders\, artists\, historians\, and the monument industry itself promoted ideas from simple tablets to monoliths rivaling those of Egypt and Rome. Memorials throughout Connecticut exemplify this entire range of monumental styles. \nHistorian Richard Donohue will be presenting an illustrated talk on the World War I Monuments of Connecticut at the Wilton Historical Society. He will share stories of their design\, placement\, and the people memorialized on them. Special attention will be given to the many in Wilton. This illustrated program lasts for approximately one hour\, with questions\, and includes images of memorials throughout the 169 towns of Connecticut\, accompanied by musical recordings of the period. A light lunch is included. \nThis program is presented as part of the exhibition\, “Bullets\, Bonds and Butter:  Wilton Responds to War\,” which will be on display in the Burt Barn Gallery from March 15-May 11\, 2019. \nDonohue is the town historian of his hometown of Cromwell\, CT. His original research has formed the basis of museum exhibits\, travelling lectures\, and living history programs on topics ranging from 18th-century slavery to Civil War-era subscription balls to early 20th-century marine engines. As president and program director of the Cromwell Historical Society for nearly 15 years and a teacher in both public and private schools for 25 years\, he strives to enhance his town’s interest and participation in local and national history. In addition to his work with history\, Donohue is a tenor soloist specializing in Middle English carols\, Bach arias\, and German Lieder and is the director of the 1876 Singing Society at Mystic Seaport. \nWilton Historical Society members attend for free; the cost for non-members is $10 per person.
