SUMMARY:The Physiology of Addiction:   Effects of Drug-Taking Behavior on the Brain
DESCRIPTION:Ruth A. Potee\, MD will explain how substances and addictive behaviors impact the brain and how the brain is injured by prolonged exposure to these substances and behaviors. She will also address the risk and impact of addiction on adolescents with ADHD. \nShe will focus on the three predisposing factors putting individuals at risk for addiction:  genetics\, early exposure during brain development\, and history of childhood trauma. Dr. Potee will explore normal risk-taking behaviors of the developing brain\, as well as the impact of marijuana on the adolescent brain acutely and over time. DESCRIPTION:In the 12th year of the collaboration between Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society\, the scholarly lecture series theme is ‘Sex\, Scandal and Upheaval: 1919 – What’s Changed?’ Veteran sports writer Steve Wulf is at the plate with the story of the infamous cheating scandal that enveloped the 1919 World Series. \nOne hundred years ago\, the stage was set for the darkest drama in the history of baseball:  the Black Sox Scandal. Upset at the penny-pinching ways of White Sox owner Charles Comiskey\, and tempted by the riches promised to them by gamblers\, several members of the team conspired to help the Cincinnati Red Stockings win the 1919 World Series. \nWulf is a senior writer with ESPN\, where he has happily worked since 1997\, when he became one of the founding editors of ESPN The Magazine. Winters is the assistant director and instructor at Roaring Brook Nature Center in Canton\, CT and manages their native plant gardens. She is also past chairman of the Federated Garden Club Landscape Design Study Program and a Master Landscape Design Consultant. \nWinters also serves as chairman on Simsbury Inland Wetland/Conservation Commission\, is a member the Simsbury Open Space Committee\, and the vice president of the Simsbury Land Trust. Margery has been actively involved in Connecticut’s river and land issues and worked on staff with a statewide river advocacy organization. \nThis lecture will also serve as the kickoff for the Community Canopy Program–Energy Saving Trees\, offering residents the opportunity to buy native trees through the Arbor Day Foundation in collaboration with the US Department of Forestry. \nThere is no charge to attend. SUMMARY:Holocaust Survivor Judith Altmann\, A Community Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Judith Altmann\, a Holocaust survivor and speaker for the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center\, returns to Wilton on Tuesday\, March 19 to share her story with the community. \nBorn in Jasina\, Czechoslovakia\, which was invaded by the Nazis in 1939\, Altmann was arrested in 1944 and transported to Auschwitz concentration camp with her niece\, where they were selected for work\, rather than sent to the gas chambers and death. From there she was moved to Essen and Gelsenkirchen Labour camps\, where she remained until March 1945\, and later survived the “death march” that ended in the Bergen Belsen concentration camp. Sick with typhus\, Altmann was barely alive when she was liberated by the British Army in 1945. She was given the opportunity to go to Sweden\, where she lived until emigrating to the United States in 1948. \nAltmann\, who has extensive experience speaking in schools\, is a member of the Holocaust & Human Rights Education Speakers Bureau\, and is vice president of the Holocaust Child Survivors of Connecticut. \nThis presentation follows Altmann’s visit to Middlebrook where she spoke to all of the students during two school-wide assemblies. Her message is one of hope and forgiveness\, encouraging her listeners to think for themselves and speak out against injustice.

SUMMARY:The Pressure to be Perfect and Its Unintended Consequences
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Alicia Farrell\, Ph.D. \nWe are raising our children in complicated times where performance is valued over character. In such a competitive world\, parents\, educators and leaders are unwittingly passing on to their children pressure to be perfect. In turn\, our children are feeling inadequate\, anxious\, overwhelmed\, stressed\, scared and tired. This talk is designed to address how we arrived at this place and what we can do about it. Here are some questions that will be answered: \n\nWhat does it mean to be perfect and what are the consequences of trying?\nHow do we balance embracing our children’s imperfections with the importance of working hard and doing your best?\nWhat are the benefits of failure and why is it critically important to our children’s development?\nWhat are healthy\, age-appropriate expectations and how do we communicate them without shame and fear?\nHow do boys and girls experience and respond to the pressure to achieve differently?\nWhat is the relationship between the pressure to be perfect and the nationwide increase of anxiety disorders\, addiction\, and suicide in children and adolescence?\n\nIt is time for change. Knowledge is key. If needed\, a snow date will be posted on the Town website. \nThe March 24 meeting will provide a brief overview of the sites and then focus on collecting feedback from participants on desired features and improvements at Schenck’s Island and Merwin Meadows. At the April 28 meeting\, Milone & MacBroom will present a summary of feedback gathered to date and will present a proposed concept plan for discussion and feedback. DESCRIPTION:Licensed clinical psychologist Mary Murphy\, PhD will discuss and demonstrate how biofeedback works. Biofeedback\, a promising treatment for ADHD\, anxiety and stress\, allows a person to learn how to monitor and change his or her body’s reaction to stressors. \nUsing a computer or smartphone\, biofeedback software allows you to monitor your biological responses\, such as breathing rates\, muscle activity\, and heart rate. The therapy process teaches you to notice changes in your body and ways to intervene to stop the body’s reactions that cause you to feel stress. It allows you to process information more efficiently\, to improve focus\, and to interrupt the process of fight-flight-freeze\, which causes distress to so many. \nOne of the most important benefits of Biofeedback is that it can be learned relatively quickly\, while working with a trained provider\, and has the goal of transitioning to independent use. \nDuring our demonstration\, Dr. Murphy will display sample biofeedback software (HeartMath) and show participants how to use common biofeedback apps at home. \nDr. Murphy is in private practice\, in Ridgefield\, CT\, at Insight Counseling\, where she specializes in counseling\, executive function/academic coaching\, psychological testing\, and biofeedback. Her counseling practice focuses on helping adolescents and adults affected by mood disorders\, neurological conditions\, and substance use. SUMMARY:Statues\, Boulders\, and Monoliths:  The World War One Memorials of Connecticut Illustrated Talk by Richard Donohue
DESCRIPTION:As the First World War ended\, American communities such as Wilton hurried to memorialize the great efforts of their sons and daughters. Changes in cultural and civic ideals since the American Civil War led to extensive public discourse about what memorials should and should not be. Government leaders\, artists\, historians\, and the monument industry itself promoted ideas from simple tablets to monoliths rivaling those of Egypt and Rome. Memorials throughout Connecticut exemplify this entire range of monumental styles. \nHistorian Richard Donohue will be presenting an illustrated talk on the World War I Monuments of Connecticut at the Wilton Historical Society. He will share stories of their design\, placement\, and the people memorialized on them. Special attention will be given to the many in Wilton. This illustrated program lasts for approximately one hour\, with questions\, and includes images of memorials throughout the 169 towns of Connecticut\, accompanied by musical recordings of the period. A light lunch is included. \nThis program is presented as part of the exhibition\, “Bullets\, Bonds and Butter:  Wilton Responds to War\,” which will be on display in the Burt Barn Gallery from March 15-May 11\, 2019. \nDonohue is the town historian of his hometown of Cromwell\, CT. His original research has formed the basis of museum exhibits\, travelling lectures\, and living history programs on topics ranging from 18th-century slavery to Civil War-era subscription balls to early 20th-century marine engines. As president and program director of the Cromwell Historical Society for nearly 15 years and a teacher in both public and private schools for 25 years\, he strives to enhance his town’s interest and participation in local and national history. In addition to his work with history\, Donohue is a tenor soloist specializing in Middle English carols\, Bach arias\, and German Lieder and is the director of the 1876 Singing Society at Mystic Seaport. \nWilton Historical Society members attend for free; the cost for non-members is $10 per person. In this session\, we’ll examine Playwork\, a UK-based professional approach to supporting children’s play. We will explore key vocabulary and theories on the processes of play (including common points of friction) and look at material and social environments which can encourage collaborative\, inclusive and satisfying experiences for all. We’ll reflect upon our own responses to children’s needs and interests\, including specific ways to know when to step back and ways to step in. Through leading research and stories of frontline practice\, we’ll also look at ways to think about our sites in both the short and long-term\, and work together to build stronger and more cohesive staff teams. \nSponsored by Wilton Youth Services and Wilton Youth Council‘s Free Play Matters Task Force.

DESCRIPTION:The Town of Wilton will be holding a public meeting to present draft concept plans for the renovation of Schenck’s Island and Merwin Meadows. The meeting will be held on Sunday\, April 28\, from 1-3 p.m. at the Comstock Community Center gym. \nThe Town’s consultant (Milone & MacBroom) will provide a summary of the information gathered at the initial public meeting which was held on March 24\, 2019. Milone & MacBroom will present the draft concept plans for discussion and further public input. \nWilton residents of all ages are encouraged to attend the meetings to provide feedback on what features and improvements they would like to see in the parks. Families are welcome to bring their children for free play on the field outside the Comstock gym while parents participate in the meeting. DESCRIPTION:From New York Times national baseball writer Tyler Kepner comes K: A History of Baseball in Ten Pitches – a deep dive into the stories\, stats\, folklore\, and nostalgia behind America’s pastime told through vivid anecdotes and insights\, examining the fastball\, the curveball\, the changeup\, the slider\, the cutter\, the sinker\, the splitter\, the knuckleball\, the screwball\, and the spitball. \nKepner has found that pitchers almost always love to talk about their craft:  18 of the 25 pitchers with the most strikeouts in the history of the sport have shared their perspectives with him\, including Nolan Ryan\, Steve Carlton\, Bob Gibson\, Randy Johnson\, and Pedro Martinez. \nKepner\, who lives in Wilton\, started covering baseball as a teenager\, interviewing players for a homemade magazine that was featured in The New York Times in 1989. He attended Vanderbilt University on the Grantland Rice/Fred Russell sportswriting scholarship\, then covered the Angels and the Mariners. He joined The New York Times in 2000\, covering the Mets for two seasons\, the Yankees for eight\, and serving as the national baseball writer since 2010. \nQ&A will follow the talk. SUMMARY:Colombia: Light at the Edge of the World with Daryl Hawk
DESCRIPTION:International documentary photographer and explorer Daryl Hawk will give a special photography presentation and lecture based on his most recent expedition to the northwestern provinces of Colombia this past March. Hawk embarked alone on a 1\,600-mile journey that started in the city of Cartagena and followed the highest coastal mountain range in the world–the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta Range. His adventure culminated in the vast Guajira Peninsula which has some of the most rugged and spectacular desert landscapes in Colombia. La Guarija is home to the Wayuu indigenous people\, who have maintained their independent way of life through the centuries. \nHawk was there to shoot a documentary for magazines.
