SUMMARY:Exhibitions Reception at Wilton Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, May 19\, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.\, the Wilton Historical Society will hold a reception to celebrate the opening of two new exhibitions. \nCommitment to Community: The Lives of Laurent Clerc and Francis Clerc Ogden is developed in partnership with the American School for the Deaf\, and explores the lives of two men\, Laurent Clerc and his great-grandson Francis Clerc Ogden. Clerc\, a co-founder of the American School for the Deaf\, spent his life working to make education accessible for deaf students\, including recruiting other trailblazing educators developing sign language. Ogden\, a Wilton resident for nearly 70 years\, was involved in countless town organizations and projects\, including helping to found the Wilton Historical Society. This exhibit will examine the work both men did in service to others and the fortuitous circumstances that brought two organizations together. \nThe Town Book: E. Boyd Smith’s 20th Century Wilton takes a deeper look at Wilton during the early 20th century\, a time of radical transformation for the town\, through the work of a resident who witnessed it firsthand\, E. Boyd Smith. Smith was a children’s book author and illustrator\, and along with his wife Mary\, was an active member of the community. Smith’s illustrations were directly inspired by the scenes he saw as he traveled around Wilton\, often including landmarks familiar to his fellow residents. His books capture a lifestyle that was rapidly disappearing and made it accessible to young readers. The exhibition will display Smith’s art alongside objects from the museum’s collection to offer different perspectives on Wilton’s evolution during the first half of the 1900’s. Funding for this exhibition was provided by Connecticut Humanities. \nThe reception is open to the public at no charge.

SUMMARY:Ceremony and Reception for A. Robert “Bob” Faesy\, Winner of the Wilton Historical Society's Historic Preservation Award
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, May 14\, A. Robert “Bob” Faesy will receive the inaugural Julian A. Gregory Sr. Award for Historic Preservation at a reception from 5-7 p.m. in Wilton. Join the Wilton Historical Society as it honors Faesy with well-deserved recognition and appreciation at this festive fundraising event. Members and friends are welcome to attend and may request an invitation or purchase a ticket below. \nGiven by the Wilton Historical Society\, this new award recognizes an individual or organization that has made a significant contribution to the preservation of historic places in Wilton and/or recognizes an individual who inspires others by their commitment\, leadership and vision for helping instill a historic preservation ethic in others. The first recipient selected for the award is A. Robert “Bob” Faesy\, long-time Wilton resident\, architect and preservationist. \nNow an Emeritus Trustee\, Faesy’s vision and dedication to historic preservation helped create the Wilton Historical Society’s Museum Complex\, Lambert Corner\, and Cannon Corner. For decades\, he has been a strong advocate for adaptive reuse and protecting Wilton’s historic landscape. \nThe award is named for Julian A. Gregory\, Sr. (1874 – 1939) who was elected the first President of the Wilton Historical Society\, and served from 1938-1939. The Wilton Historical Society was formed in 1938\, prompted by distress over the proposed demolition of an historic barn. It includes colorful narratives from their biographies and backgrounds as well as their tactics and reform efforts to promote women’s right to vote and other causes beyond to improve the lives of women and children in the United States. \nIn addition to recognizing the Suffrage movement\, the event will also serve to celebrate the founding of the League of Women Voters on Feb. 14\, 1920 plus the establishment of the Wilton branch 40 years ago. The location is the Wilton Historical Society\, and the presentation will be followed by a reception. \nAll are welcome. Please register via email or call 203.762.7257. \nDr. Kelly Marino is a historian of 20th century America with a focus on women’s history and the history of sexuality. SUMMARY:Remembering Dave: A Brubeck Family Album
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of jazz legend – and Wilton’s own — Dave Brubeck\, the Wilton Historical Society will present a special exhibit\, Remembering Dave: A Brubeck Family Album. Opening Friday\, Feb. 21\, the exhibition will run through April 18\, 2020. \nWhen he bestowed upon the jazz great the prestigious Kennedy Center Honor at the White House in 2009\, President Barack Obama stated\, “In order to understand America\, you have to understand jazz\, and in order to understand jazz\, you have to understand Dave Brubeck.”  As a pianist\, bandleader and composer\, Dave Brubeck (1920-2012) is widely acknowledged as one of America’s most significant post-swing era jazz musicians\, creating a body of music that was bold and accessible. \nAll are invited to the opening reception on Friday\, Feb. 21\, from 4-6 p.m. (no charge). The exhibition incorporates material from the Dave Brubeck:  Jazz Ambassador show\, which detailed his illustrious 70-year career and was presented at Jazz at Lincoln Center soon after Brubeck’s death\, and highlights other facets of his life such as his impact as a composer\, a performer\, a civil rights activist and as family man. \nThe Remembering Dave: A Brubeck Family Album exhibition presents additional material that speaks to Dave’s life in Wilton with his wife Iola\, and six kids\, including musicians Darius\, Chris and Dan. Growing up on a vast ranch in California\, he learned to ride\, how to be a cowboy; visitors will be able to see a Western-style saddle that belonged to his father\, as well as Dave’s cowboy hat. A highlight of the exhibition is the opportunity to see a new short film produced by the Brubeck family which contains rare footage of “Cowboy Dave.” Another section of the film shows Wilton composer\, lyricist\, pianist\, and educator Eugenie Rocherolle interviewing fellow musician Dave Brubeck. \nEntrance is free for Wilton Historical Society members; entry is $10 for non-member adults\, and free for children under 18. \nDave Brubeck 100 is the world-wide celebration of the 100th birthday of Dave Brubeck\, the jazz composer\, pianist\, cultural ambassador\, and visionary musician\, which will take place on Dec. 6\, 2020.

SUMMARY:Historical Society Talk & Reception: "Beyond The Garden–Trees Can Be Herbs"
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that birch leaves can be used medicinally to treat gastrointestinal ailments and sore muscles\, and as a tea to treat gout–plus the cambium wood layer can be cut into strips and boiled to create edible “birch noodles”? The leaves and bark of willow are a source of salicin/salicylic acid\, the predecessor of aspirin\, for fever reduction and pain relief. Other common trees including pine\, beech and dogwood have herbal qualities\, as well. \nOn Thursday\, Aug. 1 from 4:30-5:30 p.m.\, master gardener Dana Weinberg will present an informal “talk and touch” titled “Beyond the Garden–Trees Can Be Herbs” at the Wilton Historical Society. She will be sharing her extensive knowledge of birch\, willow and many other trees that provide much more than shade and beauty in the garden. The talk will be followed by a reception in the beautiful Colonial Herb Garden. \nWeinberg has gardened enthusiastically for most of her life and received her Master Gardener Certification from the University of Connecticut in 2016. Her other interests including cooking\, baking\, floral decoration\, and a wide variety of studio art endeavors. She volunteers extensively at the Bartlett Arboretum in Stamford\, where she has helped to catalog the fern garden\, designed and led classes on Arbor Earth Day\, and spent hour after hour weeding and mulching. Weinberg holds a B.A. in studio art and psychology from the University in Virginia. She lives in Stamford with her husband\, and they have two adult children. \nThe event includes questions and answers\, and a wine and cheese reception; free for Wilton Historical Society members\, $10 for non-members. Please register by calling 203.762.7257 or via email.
