SUMMARY:Parenting Talk: Children Do Well When They Can–Identifying & Solving Problems That Cause Challenging Behaviors
DESCRIPTION:Parent presentation by Ross W. Greene\, Ph.D.\, author of The Explosive Child; Lost at School; and Raising Human Beings \nChildren do well when they can; when they can’t\, it is because of lagging skills and unsolved problems. All children have times when they struggle to handle life’s expectations. Whether a child responds by whining\, sulking\, or crying\, or in ways that are more concerning–hitting\, swearing\, or biting–the goal of parents and caregivers is to identify and solve the underlying problems that cause the behavior. \nJoin organizers to learn from child psychologist Ross W. Greene\, Ph.D.\, how to understand children’s challenging episodes\, identify unsolved problems and begin to solve problems. Dr. Greene is the originator of the innovative\, empirically-supported approach to children’s behavioral challenges known as Collaborative & Proactive Solutions. \nIn the 2018-2019 school year\, the Wilton Public Schools will be learning more about Dr. Greene’s model. The district has worked with Dr. Greene to create a plan to help teachers\, faculty\, administration\, staff\, and parents learn how to help students with effective self-regulation and problem-solving strategies. This will begin with keynote addresses for elementary\, middle and high school faculty on Oct. 8\, which is a professional development day for district staff. In addition to working with faculty\, Dr. Greene will also present to parents and other concerned adults to share this model with our community. \nAdmission is free; online registration is recommended. Please email Genevieve Eason with questions. \nSponsored by:  Wilton Public Schools\, SPED*NET Wilton\, Wilton Youth Council\, and Wilton Youth Services

SUMMARY:How to Talk So Kids Will Listen And Listen So Kids Will Talk
DESCRIPTION:Wilton Public Schools is again running a six-week workshop called “How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk.” The program\, developed by the authors of the book by the same name\, uses lessons\, role-play\, and practice to help parents develop more effective skills for communicating with their children. \nIn this workshop\, participants will learn how to: \n\nEngage your child’s willing cooperation\nDeal with your child’s negative feelings – frustration\, disappointment\, anger\nExpress your anger without being hurtful\nSet firm limits and still maintain goodwill\nUse alternatives to punishment that promote self-discipline\nEncourage positive relationships between your children\nResolve family conflicts peacefully\n\nThis enormously successful program was introduced last year with funding provided through a joint initiative of the Wilton Woman’s Club and Wilton Youth Council. Both participants and facilitators shared that not only did they learn valuable skills that benefited their families\, but they also developed supportive relationships with each other. \nThe “How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk” workshop is scheduled to run three times this fall. It will be offered again in the spring\, at which time an evening option will be available. \nSession 3 – Mondays\nFacilitated by:  Kim Zemo\, Kathy Weiss\nOct 15\, 22\, 29\nNov 5\, 12\, 19 \nRegistration is open for fall sessions. Please call Wilton Youth Services at 203.834.6241. \nIf you have questions about the workshop\, please email Kim Zemo.

SUMMARY:STOP the BLEED First Aid Class
DESCRIPTION:Today we live in a world where terrorism\, the actions of unstable people\, and the dangerous impulses of friends and relatives are very real and becoming increasingly more frequent. \nMassive bleeding from any cause\, but particularly from an active shooter or explosive event where a response is delayed can result in death. Similar to how the general public learns and performs CPR\, the public must learn proper bleeding control techniques\, including how to use their hands\, dressings\, and tourniquets. Victims can quickly die from uncontrolled bleeding\, within five to 10 minutes. \nHowever\, anyone at the scene can act as immediate responder and save lives if they know what to do. \nThe Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps is offering this FREE training to teens in cooperation with Our Lady of Fatima’s Youth Group. \nWHEN:  Tuesday\, Oct. 30\, 2018 from 7-8 p.m. (EDT) \nWHERE: Our Lady of Fatima Parish Center (229 Danbury Rd.) \nFAQs: \nAre there registration requirements? \nYes. It is important that each student be given adequate time and instruction with an instructor. We need to know in advance as to how many participants to expect\, to ensure we have enough supplies and instructors on hand\, thereby making advanced registration required. \nParticpants will be required to fill out a waiver that they should complete and bring to the event. This waiver will be sent to you via email after registering. \nAre there any age restrictions for attending this class? \nDue to the nature of the content of this paticular class\, the participants should be at least 13 years of age. The target audience for this particular class is teeens between 13 and 18 years old. \nIs there a cost associated with this event? \nNo. This training is offered free of charge as a service to the community by the Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps. That being said\, WVAC is 100% a volunteer\, non-for-profit 501(c)3 organization\, and not a department within the Town of Wilton\, that relies heavily on donations from the community. Donations are by no means a prerequisite for attending this course but should you so desire\, you will have the opportunity to donate when registering for the event through this site\, or at the event itself. \nWho can I contact with any questions? \nYou may contact Brian McDermott\, WVAC vice president and community events coordinator via email. Additionally\, contact Mara Fleming\, coordinator of youth ministry at OLF via email.
