SUMMARY:[Wilton Reads] Wilton History Film Screening — Recollections & Remembrances: Stories of Wilton's Yesterdays (In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library for a trip down memory lane as we screen the 2002 documentary film about Wilton’s history\, produced on the 200th anniversary of the town’s separation from Norwalk in 1802\, when Wilton was a farm town with one-room schools\, unpaved roads and swimming in the river. \nOral historians interviewed long-time residents\, some with family histories going back to the 17th and 18th centuries. Filmmakers then combined their footage with historical photographs to create this wonderful film. Narrated by David and Maureen Canary with music by Chris and Dave Brubeck\, the film follows Wilton’s path from its early roots through two world wars\, the Depression\, a major hurricane and a flood and into the post-WWII period of growth. We’ll see how Wiltonians worked\, played\, and thrived in a rural farming town that became a major suburban community. \nRegistration is required. To register\, visit the Wilton Library website.

SUMMARY:Book Launch Event - Playing the Changes: Jazz at an African University and on the Road (a memoir by Darius and Cathy Brubeck)
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library for a special book launch event – Playing the Changes: Jazz at an African University and on the Road (a memoir by Darius and Cathy Brubeck). As a bonus\, there will be a screening of a companion documentary film directed by Dutch filmmaker Michiel ten Kleij. \nAfter a brief introduction\, the Brubecks will read some excerpts from the book and then the 60-minute film will be presented. A Q&A segment will follow. To conclude the event\, the Brubecks will sign and sell copies of their book (which is not yet available in the United States). \nEmbracing his heritage\, Darius Brubeck\, son of legendary jazz musician Dave Brubeck\, built on his father’s legacy as a jazz ambassador overcoming formidable challenges to inaugurate jazz education in apartheid South Africa. Playing the Changes is a film about the social impact of jazz music. Besides being a jazz legend\, Dave Brubeck was a civil-rights advocate and his son\, Darius\, followed in his footsteps by becoming socially engaged in South Africa during the Apartheid Era. \nDarius Brubeck is an internationally renowned pianist\, composer\, and bandleader. He was head of Jazz Studies and Director of the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal from 1983 to 2006\, when he moved to London and established The Darius Brubeck Quartet. \nCatherine Brubeck has worked in publishing\, conference organizing\, and music management in New York. On her return to South Africa\, she initiated and arranged tours and concerts for students and professional South African jazz groups. \nThere is no charge for this event. Registration is suggested. Register on the Wilton Library website or call 203.762.6334.

SUMMARY:Wilton Go Green Presents: Totally Obsessed with "Kelp!"
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Go Green to watch Kelp!\, a 30-minute documentary and then hear from Dr. Leigh Shemitz about kelp in local waters. \nAbout Kelp! the documentary: Under the looming shadow of ecological breakdown\, a young filmmaker searches for a surprising super-solution that can help build a better future for humans and the planet. On an epic adventure aboard the good ship Gleaner through Britain’s rugged coastline\, they discover the power of kelp to regenerate our coasts\, empower communities and even replace plastic. \nAfter the film Shemitz\, president of SoundWaters\, will share what it is like to grow kelp locally\, just a few miles away. SoundWaters has farmed kelp in Long Island Sound for several years\, and Shemitz will explain what it takes to grow kelp\, including the timing and process and the challenges and successes. She will discuss the environmental benefits of kelp farming: how it can improve water quality and provide key nutrients for upland farms in our region. \nShemitz is the president of SoundWaters\, where her responsibilities include setting strategic direction\, developing programs\, creating partnerships\, overseeing operations and managing the SoundWaters staff and budget. Shemitz’s extensive background in environmental science provides enormous depth and breadth as she helps SoundWaters fulfill its mission to inspire future generations to create a better world through joyful learning on Long Island Sound. Shemitz currently serves on the board of directors of the Stamford Environmental Protection Board and the Bartlett Arboretum and Gardens\, and is an emeritus board member at the New Haven Urban Resource Initiative. Shemitz earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and literature from Harvard University; and a Master’s degree in forest science and a Ph.D. in environmental health\, both from Yale University. \nRegistration is suggested.

SUMMARY:Wilton Historical Society Documentary Screening: The Hidden History of Slavery in New York
DESCRIPTION:The Hidden History of Slavery in New York digs deeply into an infamous chapter in our country that hasn’t always made its way into the history books. The film features Bryan Stevenson\, founder of the Equal Justice Initiative\, and explores how the Transatlantic trade of enslaved people was centered in the north\, not the south\, in the 17th and 18th century — with New Amsterdam as its epicenter — and Wall Street as its largest market. Journalist Larry Epstein wrote\, produced and researched the project\, which won an award at the 67th annual NY Emmy Awards. \nOn Thursday\, Jan. 22\, at 7 p.m. at the Wilton Historical Society\, Epstein will present this film along with a Q&A session afterwards. \nEpstein is a two-time Emmy award-winning documentary and news producer\, journalist\, writer\, anchor and corporate copywriter. He is a former executive producer at MSNBC and former senior-level producer at the Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network. \nSpace is limited and registration is required. The cost to attend is $10 per person for non-members\, free for Wilton Historical Society members.
