DESCRIPTION:The Domestic Violence Crisis Center (DVCC) will host its 23rd Annual Voices of Courage Spring Luncheon on Thursday\, May 15\, at Tokeneke Club in Darien. This year’s keynote will be given by nationally-recognized speaker and advocate Ashley Bendiksen\, who will share her personal journey as a survivor of teen dating violence and speak to the critical need for prevention\, awareness and community support at all levels. Tickets and sponsorships for the event may be purchased on the Domestic Violence Crisis Center’s Voices of Courage webpage. \nWith a message rooted in both lived experience and field expertise\, Bendiksen will explore the complex dynamics of intimate partner violence — what makes it difficult to leave\, the red flags young people often miss\, and what she wishes she had known earlier. She will also address how families\, schools and communities can better support youth and survivors of all ages through prevention education\, open dialogue and advocacy. \n“In sharing my story\, I hope to empower others — especially young people — to recognize unhealthy relationships early\, speak up and know they’re not alone\,” Bendiksen said. “Education and awareness can change\, and even save\, lives.” \nBendiksen is a sought-after expert on domestic violence\, uniquely specializing in how abuse impacts youth. She has spoken at leading conferences\, including NOVA (National Organization for Victim Assistance) and the National Coalition to End Sexual Exploitation (CESE)\, and has delivered expert testimony in support of a Massachusetts bill mandating employment protections for victims of abuse. Bendiksen is also the founder of the Blue Hearts Project\, a global storytelling platform for survivors\, and was featured in an award-winning documentary. Additionally\, Bendiksen serves on the Board of Directors for the Women’s Resource Center and co-owns Island Youth Coaching\, a consulting and life coaching agency dedicated to supporting and empowering youth. Funds raised from the luncheon ensure we will be there to answer the call when a domestic violence victim needs our services.” \nLast year\, DVCC provided direct services to 3\,619 survivors of domestic violence across Stamford\, Norwalk\, Darien\, New Canaan\, Weston\, Westport and Wilton. All proceeds from the luncheon will benefit DVCC’s mission to provide effective services\, support and education for the prevention and elimination of domestic violence in Connecticut communities. \nDVCC offers a full range of services including crisis intervention through its 24-hour hotline and two emergency safe houses\, adult and youth counseling\, legal advocacy\, housing and financial sustainability\, and prevention education. DESCRIPTION:sponsored post\nThe focus of Wilton residents Janine Kelly\, JD and Deborah List\, PhD in their consultancy\, College Access & Beyond\, LLC\, is to help unique students navigate a post-secondary path. The duo’s mission is to support students with disabilities and their families as they plan for transition to college. \nKelly and List are hosting a “Meet and Greet” at Tusk and Cup in Wilton (142 Old Ridgefield Rd.) on Friday\, May 6\, from 9-11 a.m.\, and are inviting members of the community to join them for coffee\, Q&A and conversation\, and an opportunity to learn more. \nThrough their combined professional experiences working with students of all ages\, Kelly and List strive to educate students and their families so they can access the support and accommodations they need to develop college readiness skills and find the college that is the “right fit” for them. Their services include: \n\nHelping students build academic and life skills in middle and high school that will lead to independence\nEncouraging students to access supports/accommodations that will translate easily to a college environment\nBuilding IEPs and 504 plans that will support the development of key college and employment readiness skills\nIncreasing students’ understanding of their individual needs\nStrengthening students’ self-advocacy skills\nInvestigating colleges and universities to find the “right fit”\nObtaining information on technical schools\, community colleges\, and gap year programs and 2-4 year colleges/universities that support students with learning needs\nNavigating a college or university system once enrolled\n\nTheir work focuses on the development of self-advocacy skills\, which are critical for success in college and beyond\, as well as working with higher education staff directly to implement environments that support accessibility and UDL. \nKelly is a special education advocate in Connecticut and has been supporting children with disabilities and their families for over 12 years. She is the founder of Advocate Together\, LLC and advises students and families on all aspects of the special education process from preschool to post-high school transition. \nList has worked in public health in hospital\, government\, advocacy\, and research settings around access and quality of care issues for children with disabilities for over 25 years. She received her undergraduate degree with Honors from Brown University and has a master’s degree in health education from Teachers College\, Columbia University. She also holds an MPH in public management and community health from Harvard School of Public Health. Join us on Saturday\, May 7 for the Opening and Artists Reception or during the rest of the week\, May 8-15. \nThe 42 artists from 12 countries included in Crowdsourcing the Collective: a survey of textile and mixed media art illustrate the vitality of art textiles\, ceramics and mixed media. The new prominence of these art forms finds them the subject of exhibitions in major museums\, intermixed with paintings and traditional sculpture in ways unthinkable a decade ago. Many of the artists in Crowdsourcing began working in the ‘80s and ’90s\, when craft and fiber art were not well recognized; some have been working since fiber art’s first heyday in the ‘60s and ’70s. \nThe exhibition reflects an astonishing range of materials and techniques\, tapestries of silk and agave\, sculptures of seaweed\, seagrass and willow\, wall works made of sandpaper\, hemp and horsehair\, and ceramics of Shigaraki clay will all be included. To support the new fall league\, WYFC is offering\, a FREE clinic/jamboree for Wilton girls and interested coaches on Wednesday\, June 9. \nFlag Football Intro Skills Clinic\nPlayers & Coaches\nWednesday\, June 9 at 5:30-7 p.m.\nMiddlebrook\nRegistration \nRegistration is also now open for all the summer and fall programs. Wilton Youth Football Cheer (WYFC) offers flag football for grades Pre-K-12 with both boys’ and girls’ options. The programs are coordinated by WYFC’s annually elected volunteer board of directors. \n“We’re so excited for the summer and fall seasons\,” said Tony Palumbo\, volunteer vice president and flag football commissioner for WYFC. “When you hear from parents there is nothing their kids love more than flag football\, you know it’s time to get more youth involved. With our new girls’ league\, we will continue our tradition of providing a flexible and supportive atmosphere for the parents and kids. Our flexible scheduling philosophy supports kids playing multiple sports and volunteer coaches’ schedules. We are a family program run by a great group of volunteer parents\, that make sure the kids come first in Flag Football.” \nThe flag summer programs are jointly run by WYFC volunteers and the Wilton High School football team. The week of June 14 there is a flag camp. Starting Monday\, June 21\, there is a Monday night clinic program. (Registration link) \nThe summer season kicks off on Monday\, June 14.
