SUMMARY:5K Run and Walk to Benefit Education in India
DESCRIPTION:Education is a central Wilton topic–most usually with a very local focus. But now\, one organization with ties to more remote areas in Asia is devoting some of that focus to education overseas. \nA local\, CT chapter of an organization called Ekal Vidyalaya\, made up of families with ties to India\, is organizing a fundraising effort to continue their support of growing education in rural and tribal Indian communities. Ekal Vidyalaya is a movement focused on creating and growing one-teacher schools in remote Indian villages to bring education to all children in the country. Since starting in 1986\, Ekal has become the largest grassroots level non-governmental education and development movement operating in rural India. \nEkal Vidyalaya is organizing 5K Run and Walk on Sunday\, Sept. 16 in Merwin Meadows\, starting at 9 a.m.\, to raise funds to continue their work. Registration to take part in the 5K costs $20 per adult\, $10 per child. \nThe CT chapter of Ekal was started in 2010. That year the group raised funds for 100 schools and has continued to grow 30% every year\, contributing a total of 500+ schools by 2018. There are approximately 50 families in Fairfield County who have been involved in the local effort. 500 schools are part of the 75\,000 schools created by the global effort\, impacting more than 2 million students. \nAccording to the Ekal website\, the movement aims to help eradicate illiteracy from rural and tribal India\, following a philosophy of rural development based on criteria of equality and inclusiveness across all sections of society. \nEkal says each school is managed and run for just $365 a year. The money funds teachers more than physical infrastructure or buildings. It hires and trains teachers\, and aims to utilize physical space free of cost. The website says that Ekal’s administrative costs are less than 10% of contributions and the majority of the organization’s workforce is volunteer. \nFor more information\, contact organizers via email or visit the chapter’s Facebook page.

DESCRIPTION:Join JoyRide for a 50-minute fundraising ride led by Anne Stauff and Cindy Tamburri at JoyWilton on Friday\, Sept. 28\, 2018 at 12 p.m. to support Issy Kwei and Family. \nIn July 2018\, 12-year old Issy was diagnosed with a rare cerebellar tumor at the brain stem. She underwent an 8-hour emergency surgery to remove the tumor and was declared “tumor free.” She has been receiving chemotherapy treatments at Yale and she is expected to make a full recovery. The family faces months of various medical treatments and rehabilitation therapies to help her regain all those brain-stem controlled skills – from breathing\, swallowing\, and other mobility and speech functions. All proceeds from this ride will benefit Issy’s Health Care Fund and help the family with the costly medical expenses. \nPlease note that the minimum donation is $40 per bike (paid in cash or check) the day of the ride. DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Interfaith Action Committee (Wi-ACT) supports the Cystic Fibrosis Bridge of Hope by providing meals to and helping drive the patients that come here for treatment. Wi-ACT is having a fundraising ride at JoyRide for the Cystic Fibrosis Bridge of Hope on Saturday\, Dec. 1 at 11:30 a.m.. It is $40 to ride and the money we raise will truly help to save someone’s life. \nCF Bridge of Hope was started by two long-time Wilton residents\, the husband and wife team of Dr. Hossein Sadeghi and Dr. Dr. Golnar Raissi. Learn more online about the charity on the CF Bridge of Hope website. \nNo spin experience is necessary. Just go to the Joyride Wilton website\, click on the link in the events page\, set up an account and choose your bike. \nThis fundraiser will be a 50-minute JoyRide led by the super motivating and energetic instructor\, Jared Marinelli! \nPlease arrive at JoyRide Wilton by 11 a.m.\, to allow time to get checked in and set up properly on the bike. DESCRIPTION:In the 12th year of the collaboration between Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society\, the scholarly lecture series theme is ‘Sex\, Scandal and Upheaval: 1919 – What’s Changed?’ Veteran sports writer Steve Wulf is at the plate with the story of the infamous cheating scandal that enveloped the 1919 World Series. \nOne hundred years ago\, the stage was set for the darkest drama in the history of baseball:  the Black Sox Scandal. Upset at the penny-pinching ways of White Sox owner Charles Comiskey\, and tempted by the riches promised to them by gamblers\, several members of the team conspired to help the Cincinnati Red Stockings win the 1919 World Series. \nWulf is a senior writer with ESPN\, where he has happily worked since 1997\, when he became one of the founding editors of ESPN The Magazine.
