SUMMARY:Free Youth Gardening Program at Trackside
DESCRIPTION:Do you have a budding youth gardener?  The free Green Teens youth gardening program’s spring sessions have started at Trackside Teen Center. All rising middle and high school students are welcome. No gardening experience is necessary — just an interest in nature and in helping others\, as the program is rooted (no pun intended!) in community service. The program is held Wednesdays from 3:30-5 p.m. at Trackside\, from May 14-June 11. Sign up any time. The summer session Mondays 9-11 a.m. from June 23-Aug 11.  \nAn initiative of the Wilton Garden Club (WGC) and Trackside Teen Center\, Green Teens is led by experienced WGC gardeners. Its participants engage in hands-on activities like designing garden beds\, planting\, maintaining\, harvesting as well as learning about pollinators and how to cook with the produce grown in their gardens. They also hear from occasional guest speakers and make creative garden art projects. All of the produce grown is donated weekly to the Wilton Food Pantry and the fresh flowers grown are cut and arranged for the Wilton Senior Center. \n“Green Teens goal is to get more young people involved with creating and maintaining vegetable gardens\, to teach them about the importance of healthy foods\, and to give back to the community\,” Laurie Musilli\, co-chair of WGC’s youth gardening committee\, said. “There’s something in this program for everyone.” \nTo register\, contact Musilli via email or Pam Nobumoto via email. Sign-ups are welcome at any time; registration is ongoing. For more information visit the Green Teens page on the Trackside website.

SUMMARY:Women in STEM: Pathways to Technology Careers
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Women’s History Month\, join Wilton Library for a panel discussion with five women from ASML Wilton\, who share their pathways in STEM that span early inspiration to current work positions at the cutting edge of semiconductor manufacturing technology. \nThis program is for high schoolers who loves STEM and are beginning the college application process\, college students looking for a STEM internship preparing to dip their toes into the job market\, or women working in STEM trying to advance in the field. Come prepared with questions. Leave with answers and the inspiration to forge your own pathway in STEM! \nWomen remain underrepresented in STEM in the U.S.\, especially in physical sciences\, computers\, mathematical sciences\, and engineering. Panelists nonetheless bring different experiences\, including STEM disciplines\, intersecting identities\, and strategies for persistence and success to facilitate a conversation. \nASML is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of chip-making equipment. They also design and manufacture the lithography machines that are an essential component in chip manufacturing. They are headquartered in Veldhoven\, Netherlands. ASML Wilton employs over 3000 people and is an important competency center\, specializing in critical technologies that advance the performance of their lithography and metrology systems. It is also their only in-house optical fabrication site. \nRegistration is requested online or call 203.762.6334.

SUMMARY:WLA/WHS Scholarly Series: Innovation\, Disruption\, Revolution: The Impact of Technological Advancement — William Boone Bonvillian
DESCRIPTION:Where did the Internet\, Stealth\, GPS\, and Covid mRNA vaccines come from? The Role of DARPA in Fostering Disruptive Technologies — William Bonvillian\, MIT \nIn the 17th year of Wilton Library and Wilton Historical Society’s collaboration\, the scholarly lecture series focuses on the theme of Innovation\, Disruption\, Revolution: The Impact of Technological Advancement. In this lecture\, William Bonvillian\, MIT lecturer and Wilton resident\, discusses the U.S. government’s crucial role in the development of everything from the internet to COVID vaccines. \nThe government not only funds the research that leads to these technological advances\, but also bridges the gap between scientific breakthroughs and their commercially successful applications. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is one of the most extraordinary engines over the past half-century for such activity. Later\, “clones” in other government agencies beyond the U.S. Department of Defense\, DARPA’s home\, also took on some of that responsibility. This session describes those breakthroughs and illuminates DARPA’s (and its clones’) role in bringing them about. \nBonvillian is a lecturer at MIT and a senior director at MIT’s Program for Open Learning. From 2006 until 2017\, he was the director of MIT’s Washington office\, supporting MIT’s long-standing role in science policy. He now teaches courses on science and technology policy at MIT and is the author of five books on innovation policy\, including a 2020 book on DARPA. Previously\, he worked for over 15 years on innovation issues as a senior advisor in the U.S. Senate\, and earlier was a Deputy Assistant U.S. Secretary of Transportation. He has served on two National Academy of Science (NAS) Boards and nine other NAS committees and was named a Fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences. He is a Wilton resident and Wilton High School graduate and earned degrees from Columbia\, Yale and Columbia Law. \nThis series is sponsored by Laureen Mody and the moderator is Steve Hudspeth. A reception follows the talk and there is no charge to attend\, but donations are welcome. Visit Wilton Library’s website for required registration and additional dates\, topics\, and speaker details or call 203.762.6334 to register.
