SUMMARY:87th Cannon Grange Agricultural Fair & Exposition
DESCRIPTION:An authentic agricultural fair\, the Cannon Grange Ag Fair is the only fair of its kind in lower Fairfield County! Area residents are invited to exhibit a variety of baked goods and culinary arts\, homegrown vegetables\, fruit\, flowers\, hand crafts\, sewing & needlework\, photography\, small farm animals\, eggs and photography. \nThe Cannon Grange Fair recalls Wilton’s rural and agrarian past\, and provides an opportunity for children\, youth\, adults and families to enjoy the exhibits inside the historic Grange Hall and on its grounds located in the heart of Cannondale Village. Several state-level baking contests are available from the Association of CT Fairs with their Adult Baking\, Junior Baking and 2-Crust Apple Pie Contests. Both concessionaires and area Non-Profits will also show on the fair grounds. \nA new baking contest is being inaugurated in 2019 with the “Dave Barrett–Cannon Grange Perpetual Trophy” contest. Dave and his wife Joyce have been avid fair participants\, having won many baking contests in previous years. Dave succumbed to illness last year and we’ve renamed this special contest in Dave’s memory. \nFind a Fair Book\, with all the rules and requirements for submitting entries\, at area merchants\, or online. See you at the Fair!

SUMMARY:Family Volunteer Opportunity: Wilton Kiwanis Pumpkin Patch
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wilton Kiwanis Club at its 2nd Family Service Day for a fun opportunity to volunteer together as a family\, on Saturday\, Sept. 28\, at 9 a.m.\, in the Pumpkin Patch at the Wilton Historical Society. \nWe will arrange pumpkins and gourds in the Pumpkin Patch\, getting the Patch ready to begin selling pumpkins\, hay\, cornstalks\, and more. Donuts will be on hand to give us energy.  Plus\, each volunteer family will get a $5 off coupon toward a pumpkin to take home. \nSales from the Pumpkin Patch will benefit the Wilton Community. Volunteering does more than make people feel good–it enhances social networks\, improves mental health\, and contributes to higher levels of happiness\, self-esteem\, self-worth\, and life satisfaction. \nThe Kiwanis Club is grateful to all the families that came out for the Club’s 1st Family Service Day at the Kiwanis Memorial Day Pancake Breakfast!  Thanks to them\, we were able to efficiently serve our traditional Memorial Day Pancake Breakfast to so many in the community. This is due\, in no small part\, to Wilton’s active\, service-minded neighbors coming together to enhance the enjoyment and observance of the Town’s parade. \nQuestions? Email Kiwanians Mary Anne Franco or Jeff Kaplan. \nOther upcoming service events planned include: \n\nFood Drive Weekend\, Dec. 14\, 2019\, 10 a.m.–gather at Wilton Library\nTown Clean Up Day\, Saturday\, May 2020–assemble at the Gazebo in Wilton Center\n\n

SUMMARY:Wi-ACT Rise Against Hunger Volunteer Meal-Packaging Event
DESCRIPTION:Each year members of the Wilton community come together to participate in one of the most gratifying\, heartfelt volunteer efforts\, the Wilton Interfaith Action Committee‘s (WI-ACT) Rise Against Hunger Meal-Packaging Event. \nThis year’s meal packaging falls on Saturday\, Oct. 19\, when 700 Wilton volunteers will come together to work across four\, two-hour shifts over the course of a very full day\, to make a difference in the lives of children living in food insecurity around the world. \nIn full\, over the seven previous years of this event\, Wilton has packaged more than 1\,000\,000 meals\, each one providing a highly nutritious meal in a compact package. What’s more\, the program nourishes children in mind as well as body\, as recipient children are fed in educational settings\, helping contribute toward breaking the cycle of poverty and malnutrition. \nWilton Rise Against Hunger volunteers also help meet food sufficiency needs here locally as well\, by bringing non-perishable food items to the event for local food pantries. \nFor this year’s event\, Wi-ACT has set the same goal as last year of 150\,000 meals to be packaged in one day\, but financing for the bulk ingredients to meet that goal has become a bigger challenge this year. WI-ACT pays for the meal components in advance from the organizer\, highly rated nonprofit Rise Against Hunger\, Inc. at a cost of 31 cents per meal. That’s a bargain for these highly nutritious meals that feed over 400 children (at the 150\,000-meal level) for every day of an entire year but that price is an increase of two cents per meal over previous years and presents a major part of the financial challenge of again reaching the 150\,000-meal level\, to the total of $3\,000. \nA new feature of this year’s event will be a 40-ft. ocean-going container on site at the WEPCO Church Complex (36 New Canaan Rd.) where the meal-packaging is done. Some meals will already be pre-loaded from other events\, but the majority of the meals it will contain are to be from this Wilton event. Once the Wilton event ends and all of the meals packaged that day in Wilton have been loaded\, the container will be sealed and immediately driven dockside to be loaded on a ship and delivered\, most likely to Somalia. \nAnyone who would like to volunteer for meal-packaging is welcome to participate. Individuals and families (with members as young as 7-years-old who take on the very important “runner” responsibility\, up to senior citizens) can join in the work to make it an uplifting and exciting full-family experience! Interested participants can sign up for a shift online. \nOrganizers are asking for community members to consider donating to help pay for the bulk ingredients so that Wi-ACT can hit the goal of 150\,000 meals. All funds raised go to pay for those bulk ingredients. Donations can be by check made payable to “Rise Against Hunger\, Inc.” noting “Wilton CT event” on the memo line\, and should be mailed to 6 Glen Hill Rd.\, Wilton\, CT 06897\, or donated directly to Rise Against Hunger for this Wilton event at a Rise Against Hunger\, Inc. website dedicated for the Wilton event.

SUMMARY:Townwide Clean Up Day 2020–CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED \nThe Wilton Conservation Commission is looking for volunteers on Saturday\, April 25 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. to participate in its Townwide Cleanup. This year we can do even more and have a larger impact on our community by bringing family\, friends\, and neighbors together for the 2020 Cleanup Day. \nFor more information on the event\, or to sign up ahead of time\, please contact the Wilton Department of Environmental Affairs by calling 203.563.0180.

And Ambler Farm has already-germinated plants for easy transition into your garden. SUMMARY:Comstock Hill Cemetery – Stewardship Workday
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Land Conservation Trust\, in partnership with the Drum Hill Chapter NSDAR\, invites the community to celebrate our Nation’s Independence by stewarding the Comstock Hill Cemetery. This cemetery is the final resting grounds for six Revolutionary War Patriots. In honor of Independence Day 2020\, and the 246th anniversary of the American Revolutionary War\, the WLCT has partnered with the Drum Hill Chapter NSDAR to put together a community stewardship workday to improve the quality of the cemetery’s trail and grounds. \nThis workday will focus on the trail that winds through the cemetery\, general brush maintenance\, and the hand-pulling of invasive species. Volunteer crews will dig\, rake\, and cut to improve the trails and clear the passageway of stones and overhanging vegetation. \nVolunteers will meet at 1:30 p.m. (rain or shine) at the Signal Hill Rd. trail entrance; work should wrap up about 3:30 p.m. Wilton Land Conservation Trust staff will be onsite to provide instruction and make sure everyone stays safe. \nVolunteers should wear long pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, sturdy boots\, and gloves. Bring water\, snacks\, lunch\, and work gloves. WLCT Staff will provide tools\, but participants are always welcome to bring their own loppers\, hand saws\, hand trowels\, etc. \nPARKING\nVolunteers are invited to park along the roadside of Signal Hill Rd. Please be mindful of our neighbor’s lawns and driveways. Parking on Ridgefield Rd. can be dangerous and is not recommended. \nCOVID-19\nFollowing COVID-19 safety guidelines\, volunteers are expected to bring and wear their own masks\, and to respect six foot of social distance between one another. \nVolunteering on a WLCT preserve is a rewarding way to give back to your community\, learn about conservation\, and improve public open spaces. For information on additional volunteer opportunities\, contact David McCarthy\, WLCT Executive Director via email or at 800.983.3552. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Laptop and Tablet Collection for Wyoming School
DESCRIPTION:AJ Preisano\, Wilton resident and junior at Fairfield Prep\, is collecting used and new laptops and tablets for children on an Indian Reservation in Wyoming. \nFremont County School District #14  located in Ethete\, Wyoming on Wind River Reservation has been forced to close due to an 11% positivity rate of Covid-19. Students are all virtual and do not have the resources to learn online. \nPreisano\, who is heavily involved in charitable work at Prep\, is working with Full Court Peace\, a Norwalk-based organization that has separate outposts in Cuba\, the Dominican Republic\, and Wyoming. Its international wing\, “Full Court Peace Travel” sends resources to these locations to help bolster basketball leagues for kids. But now\, amidst an 11% infection rate on the Wind River Reservation\, the superintendent is seeking basic technology to help the at-home learning in the Indian community. \nCollection is ongoing and cash donations are welcome. \nIf you would like to purchase a new tablet to donate\, please see here. \nPlease email AJ Preisano for donation and shipping instructions.

SUMMARY:Patriots’ Day with Drum Hill Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution: Comstock Hill Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, April 18\, 2021\, from 1:30-3 pm\, please join members of Drum Hill at Comstock Hill Cemetery located at the bottom of North Signal Hill. Comstock Hill Cemetery was given to the DAR and we\, in turn\, turned it over to the Wilton Land Conservation Trust. We will spruce the cemetery up and then place flags on our Revolutionary Soldiers buried there. Bring gloves and rakes. Appropriate for ages 12 and up. \nPatriots’ Day\, the third Monday in the Month of April commemorates the Battles of Lexington and Concord\, also known as the “shots heard round the world.” Massachusetts observes Patriots’ Day with the running of the Boston Marathon. Other states observing Patriots’ Day include Maine\, Wisconsin\, Connecticut (2018)\, North Dakota (2019) and Florida. As America leads up to her 250th birthday in 2026\, Drum Hill DAR is launching a Patriots’ Day Initiative. We have many fun and some solemn activities planned. We hope you will join us!
