SUMMARY:Comstock Cemetery Fall Clean-up
DESCRIPTION:Drum Hill Daughters of the American Revolution is sponsoring clean-up of Comstock Cemetery on Ridgefield Rd./Rte 33. \nThe Comstock Cemetery is located behind a hill on the west side of Ridgefield Rd.\, just south of Signal Hill Rd. North. There rest more than 60 forefathers of Wilton and their family members. It was opened during the Revolution in 1782 and is the third oldest burial yard in the Town. Burials continued to be made here until 1851. A marker at the southern entrance\, placed by the Drum Hill Chapter of the DAR\, marks the cemetery as the resting place of seven Revolutionary War soldiers.

SUMMARY:Wi-ACT Rise Against Hunger Volunteer Meal-Packaging Event
DESCRIPTION:Each year members of the Wilton community come together to participate in one of the most gratifying\, heartfelt volunteer efforts\, the Wilton Interfaith Action Committee‘s (WI-ACT) Rise Against Hunger Meal-Packaging Event. \nThis year’s meal packaging falls on Saturday\, Oct. 19\, when 700 Wilton volunteers will come together to work across four\, two-hour shifts over the course of a very full day\, to make a difference in the lives of children living in food insecurity around the world. \nIn full\, over the seven previous years of this event\, Wilton has packaged more than 1\,000\,000 meals\, each one providing a highly nutritious meal in a compact package. What’s more\, the program nourishes children in mind as well as body\, as recipient children are fed in educational settings\, helping contribute toward breaking the cycle of poverty and malnutrition. \nWilton Rise Against Hunger volunteers also help meet food sufficiency needs here locally as well\, by bringing non-perishable food items to the event for local food pantries. \nFor this year’s event\, Wi-ACT has set the same goal as last year of 150\,000 meals to be packaged in one day\, but financing for the bulk ingredients to meet that goal has become a bigger challenge this year. WI-ACT pays for the meal components in advance from the organizer\, highly rated nonprofit Rise Against Hunger\, Inc. at a cost of 31 cents per meal. That’s a bargain for these highly nutritious meals that feed over 400 children (at the 150\,000-meal level) for every day of an entire year but that price is an increase of two cents per meal over previous years and presents a major part of the financial challenge of again reaching the 150\,000-meal level\, to the total of $3\,000. \nA new feature of this year’s event will be a 40-ft. ocean-going container on site at the WEPCO Church Complex (36 New Canaan Rd.) where the meal-packaging is done. Some meals will already be pre-loaded from other events\, but the majority of the meals it will contain are to be from this Wilton event. Once the Wilton event ends and all of the meals packaged that day in Wilton have been loaded\, the container will be sealed and immediately driven dockside to be loaded on a ship and delivered\, most likely to Somalia. \nAnyone who would like to volunteer for meal-packaging is welcome to participate. Individuals and families (with members as young as 7-years-old who take on the very important “runner” responsibility\, up to senior citizens) can join in the work to make it an uplifting and exciting full-family experience! Interested participants can sign up for a shift online. \nOrganizers are asking for community members to consider donating to help pay for the bulk ingredients so that Wi-ACT can hit the goal of 150\,000 meals. All funds raised go to pay for those bulk ingredients. Donations can be by check made payable to “Rise Against Hunger\, Inc.” noting “Wilton CT event” on the memo line\, and should be mailed to 6 Glen Hill Rd.\, Wilton\, CT 06897\, or donated directly to Rise Against Hunger for this Wilton event at a Rise Against Hunger\, Inc. website dedicated for the Wilton event.

SUMMARY:Family Volunteer Opportunity: Wilton Kiwanis Pumpkin Patch
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wilton Kiwanis Club at its 2nd Family Service Day for a fun opportunity to volunteer together as a family\, on Saturday\, Sept. 28\, at 9 a.m.\, in the Pumpkin Patch at the Wilton Historical Society. \nWe will arrange pumpkins and gourds in the Pumpkin Patch\, getting the Patch ready to begin selling pumpkins\, hay\, cornstalks\, and more. Donuts will be on hand to give us energy.  Plus\, each volunteer family will get a $5 off coupon toward a pumpkin to take home. \nSales from the Pumpkin Patch will benefit the Wilton Community. Volunteering does more than make people feel good–it enhances social networks\, improves mental health\, and contributes to higher levels of happiness\, self-esteem\, self-worth\, and life satisfaction. \nThe Kiwanis Club is grateful to all the families that came out for the Club’s 1st Family Service Day at the Kiwanis Memorial Day Pancake Breakfast!  Thanks to them\, we were able to efficiently serve our traditional Memorial Day Pancake Breakfast to so many in the community. This is due\, in no small part\, to Wilton’s active\, service-minded neighbors coming together to enhance the enjoyment and observance of the Town’s parade. \nQuestions? Email Kiwanians Mary Anne Franco or Jeff Kaplan. \nOther upcoming service events planned include: \n\nFood Drive Weekend\, Dec. 14\, 2019\, 10 a.m.–gather at Wilton Library\nTown Clean Up Day\, Saturday\, May 2020–assemble at the Gazebo in Wilton Center\n\n

SUMMARY:87th Cannon Grange Agricultural Fair & Exposition
DESCRIPTION:An authentic agricultural fair\, the Cannon Grange Ag Fair is the only fair of its kind in lower Fairfield County! Area residents are invited to exhibit a variety of baked goods and culinary arts\, homegrown vegetables\, fruit\, flowers\, hand crafts\, sewing & needlework\, photography\, small farm animals\, eggs and photography. \nThe Cannon Grange Fair recalls Wilton’s rural and agrarian past\, and provides an opportunity for children\, youth\, adults and families to enjoy the exhibits inside the historic Grange Hall and on its grounds located in the heart of Cannondale Village. Several state-level baking contests are available from the Association of CT Fairs with their Adult Baking\, Junior Baking and 2-Crust Apple Pie Contests. Dave succumbed to illness last year and we’ve renamed this special contest in Dave’s memory. \nFind a Fair Book\, with all the rules and requirements for submitting entries\, at area merchants\, or online. SUMMARY:Clean-up on Wilton Loop of Norwalk River Valley Trail
DESCRIPTION:The next clean-up on the Wilton Loop of the Norwalk River Valley Trail will be on Father’s Day\, Sunday\, June 17\, 9:30-11 a.m.. \nCharlie Taney\, NRVT’s executive director\, makes the pitch that spending time with dad volunteering to help in the cleanup makes a great\, unique Father’s Day gift. “And\, the cleanup will be done by 11:30 a.m.\, so dads will get home just in time for their Father’s Day brunch\,” he adds. \nThe June 17 clean-up is a major effort to push back the vegetation that’s encroaching on the NRVT. Two teams are being organized: one will start at Rte. 7 across from the commuter lot and work north; the other team will start at the Autumn Ridge parking lot and work south. \nHelp is needed in each of the two locations. Volunteers are asked to email Charlie Taney to sign on to help\, choose a clean-up location\, and provide the number of people in your volunteer group.
