SUMMARY:“Spirits of the Past” at Historic Sharp Hill Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:A Historic Walk and Re-Enactment with Wilton Historian Bob Russell \nOn Saturday\, Nov. 2 from 11 a.m.-12 p.m.\, a most unusual tour of Wilton’s oldest burial ground\, the historic Sharp Hill Cemetery\, will be offered. Portrayed by re-enactors\, six of our town’s intrepid early settlers (each buried there) will describe their role in Wilton’s history. Some of the historic figures portrayed will include the thrice married Sarah Lockwood Selleck Hickox (1678-1765)\, Matthew Gregory (1680-1777) and Hannah Keeler Gregory (1687-1767). The history of the cemetery itself will be explored by Wilton history expert and former first selectman Bob Russell. \nThe Sharp Hill Cemetery\, owned by the Wilton Congregational Church\, is the oldest surviving cemetery in Wilton\, dating from 1738. That year\, John Marvin gave 64 square rods (4/10 of an acre) to the “Presbyterian or Congregational Society of Wilton” as the site of a meeting house for the worship of God\, as the Society had outgrown the small building in which they had started 12 years earlier. The cemetery was to surround the new meeting house. Although the church building which was built there only lasted until 1790\, the cemetery was used actively until the mid-1800’s and then was gradually replaced by Hillside Cemetery on Ridgefield Rd.\, which had the advantage of more space. \nThe men and women who are buried in Sharp Hill Cemetery include founders of Wilton\, church leaders\, and 23 veterans of the Revolutionary or the French and Indian Wars. Many of the family names found here are still familiar in Wilton today in person or on street signs\, including Abbott\, Belden\, DeForest\, Dudley\, Fitch\, Gaylord\, Gilbert\, Gregory\, Grumman\, Hurlbutt\, Lambert\, Olmstead\, Raymond\, St. John\, and Sturges. There are about 150 legible gravestones\, including about 70 from the 18th century\, plus another 150 or so stones no longer legible or graves marked only with common fieldstones. Many of the older gravestones have ornate skull carvings and other interesting designs. Because of the fragile nature of many of the stones\, gravestone rubbing is definitely discouraged. \nThe talk is co-sponsored by the Wilton Historical Society and the Wilton Congregational Church. Please register in advance via e-mail or by calling 203.762.7257. The suggested donation is $10.

SUMMARY:Fall Walk-A-Thon at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Academy
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, Nov. 8\, at 12:45 p.m.\, Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Academy will hold its Fall Walk-A-Thon. This is one of the school’s major fundraising events of the year\, but it will also benefit the community–10% of all funds raised in the walk-a-thon will be donated to local area food banks (Norwalk and Wilton). \nStudents and faculty will walk a designated route on the school and adjacent church property. Each grade will choose a canonized saint to remember and honor in their walk. “The saints will be our inspiration for the walk\,” said school principal Stanley Steele. “The walk-a-thon is a perfect opportunity for our students to see what ‘service above self’ really means. We work hard to instill the notion of giving back to the community and helping those in need\, as the saints did. And we’ll have a little fun in the process\, too.” \nIn addition to working on class projects to showcase their spirit and support for the event\, students have garnered pledges of support from family\, friends and neighbors. Businesses and individuals interested in supporting walk-a-thon participants are also welcome to make donations and may contact the school. The deadline for walk-a-thon donations is Nov. 8\, 2019. \nThe Fall Walk-A-Thon will take place at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Academy\, 225 Danbury Rd.\, Wilton.

SUMMARY:Champions of Change: Women's History Month Cemetery Walk
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Women’s History Month\, Hillside Cemetery has created a self-guided walking tour highlighting notable women of Wilton. With this new annual tradition\, Hillside recognizes local women and their significant contributions to Wilton and beyond. You will meet a patriot\, abolitionist\, suffragette\, community activist\, Justice of the Peace\, and journalist. On future tours\, artists\, writers\, educators\, entrepreneurs\, and others will be featured. We have so many special women to celebrate here at Hillside! \nThe walk is both educational and inspirational. Meeting these special women reminds us that within each of us is the power to help make our community the place we want it to be now and in the future. \nWhile some of the women buried at Hillside were once legendary public figures\, others may only have been known and missed by a few family members. Hillside is an important place to realize the value of one’s own life by understanding that someone in the future may stand in the exact same place where you are standing today. \nSee here for the brochure and map. For more information email or call Pamela Brown 203.762.5591. Enjoy the tour!

SUMMARY:Wilton Quaker Meeting Mother's Day Peace Stroll
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Quaker Meeting for the annual Mother’s Day Peace Stroll on Sunday\, May 9\, 1:00 pm. \nMeet at the Stroffolino Bridge next to the Maritime Aquarium in South Norwalk in festive attire with signs of peace. Bring your mother\, grandmother\, kids\, partners\, spouses\, neighbors\, and dogs for a lively stroll through South Norwalk after we read a few proclamations on the bridge. \nMost people think that Mother’s Day was a holiday invented by Hallmark to sell more cards. But\, in fact\, Mother’s Day for Peace was instituted in 1870 by Julia Ward Howe as a response to the carnage of the Civil War.  She called on women to come together to commemorate their dead and to find “the means whereby the great human family can live together in peace.” \nOur Mother’s Day Peace Stroll will step off from the bridge at 1:15 p.m. and stroll along Washington St.\, then take a right on Main. We will stop briefly on the steps of Old City hall to take photos and read some proclamations and then return down Washington St. to the bridge. \nThis is the beginning of our campaign to encourage US Representative Jim Himes to support a 10% cut in the military budget to redirect funds to meeting human needs post-pandemic. Senators Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal supported an amendment to the Defense Authorization bill in 2020 to make the 10% cut but Himes did not. It is vital in these times of great need that we ask the military to make some cuts.

SUMMARY:Birding at Allen's Meadow with Joe Bear

Come join Wilton resident and expert birder Joe Bear as we look for warblers\, vireos\, tanagers\, orioles\, an assortment of sparrows\, and several species of raptors occupying the skies.
