Over the last two Thursdays\, Joe helped us spot a host of spring migrants including an Orchard Oriole\, Bobolink\, Indigo Bunting\, Baltimore Orioles\, Eastern Kingbirds\, Warblers (including Wilson’s\, Blue-winged\, Northern Parula\, Black and White\, American Redstart\, Blackpoll)\, and Savannah Sparrows\, with Bluebirds and Tree Swallows tending to their nest boxes. Joe will lead this leisurely 2-hour walk through the diverse habitats this birding hot spot has to offer – open field\, woodlands\, edges\, pond\, and swamp – to seek out returning summer residents\, those on their way to northern nesting grounds\, and maybe a vagrant or two. \nMeet at the North end of the baseball field parking lot near Field 6 sign. SUMMARY:Woodcock Nature Center: Where the Wild Things Run 5K and Kids Fun Run
DESCRIPTION:Woodcock Nature Center welcomes runners\, hikers\, and walkers of all ages at its annual Where the Wild Things Run 5K and Kids Fun Run on Sunday\, Oct. 3 at 8:30 am. For several decades\, this event has highlighted Woodcock’s nearly 5 miles of publicly accessible trails and raised money for the center’s educational programs. \nThe popular 5K\, which kicks off at 9 am is 90% trail with a mix of groomed trails\, rugged trails\, and narrow bridges/boardwalks. Walkers are also welcome. The terrain of the 5k will highlight the diversity and beauty of the Woodcock property. \nA shorter 1K Kids Fun Run geared towards ages 6 and up kicks off at 8:30 am and is guided by a Woodcock team member. Parents are also welcome to accompany their children. \nAfter the Kids Fun Run\, families are invited to stick around for some unique post-race festivities on the nature center grounds including snacks\, music\, games\, playground fun\, nature crafts\, and the annual live turtle race at 9:15 am.  \nWoodcock welcomes interested businesses to inquire about sponsorship opportunities which can include inclusion on the race t-shirt\, cross-promotions\, and a table at the race finish. Special thanks to current sponsors Fairfield County Bank\, Outdoor Sports Center\, and Ridgefield Running Company. \nOrganizers are expecting 150 participants\, so runners are encouraged to register in advance online. Race fees are $35 for the 5K and $20 for the Kids Fun Run. Race t-shirts will only be guaranteed to participants registered by Wednesday\, Sept. 15. Prizes will be awarded to top adult finishers.

SUMMARY:Trekking Together: A Spring Guided Hike of the North Wilton Trail
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Land Conservation Trust and the Woodcock Nature Center are working together to enrich the Wilton community. As partners\, they are providing opportunities for families to get out and explore the outdoors. Together\, they created a unique opportunity for participants to learn about Wilton’s environment while walking through it with staff naturalists. \nThis hike starts and ends at the Woodcock Nature Center’s Orange Trail on Gilly Lane. Participants will traverse across spectacle land and into WLCT’s Spectacle Land Trail. The group will explore a combination of forests\, meadows\, rivers\, and wetlands. Staff naturalists will point out wildlife flora\, fauna\, geological features\, and of course\, birds! Questions along the way are welcomed and encouraged. SUMMARY:Wilton Education Foundation’s ‘Get Smart for Wilton 5K’
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Education Foundation holds its 12th Annual Get Smart for Wilton 5K on Sunday\, May 29\, at 8:30 a.m. This family-friendly\, charity event is a chip-timed race on a USATF certified course and attracts over 300 runners each year of all levels\, from elite racers to beginners\, local runners\, teachers\, seniors\, moms\, dads and kids\, all raising visibility and funds to support the Wilton Public Schools. \nThe fundraiser’s 5K route starts and ends at the Wilton High School track\, and features Cider Mill and Wilton High School prominently along the course. Cash prizes are given to the top three male and female runners\, and awards go to the top three boys and girls under 13. All race finishers under the age of 13 receive a medal. \nPre-registered participants receive a T-shirt. Runners of all ability levels are welcome and proceeds from the race will support enrichment opportunities for Wilton Public School students. \nFor anyone not in town or still not comfortable running together in crowds\, registration for a virtual event is also an option and can be run anywhere and anytime from May 23-29. \nTo donate directly\, visit the Wilton Education Foundation website. \nRegistration is online; pre-registered participants receive a free t-shirt. Joe has been birding for over 30 years\, having led both domestic and international trips for the CT Audubon Society and other nature-based organizations. \nBear will lead this leisurely two-hour walk through the diverse habitats this birding hot spot\, Allen’s Meadow\, has to offer – open fields\, woodlands\, edges\, pond and swamp – to seek out returning summer residents\, those on their way to northern nesting grounds\, and maybe a vagrant or two. Previous spring walks have yielded a wide variety of species including Orchard Orioles\, Bobolinks\, Indigo Buntings\, Baltimore Orioles\, Scarlet Tanagers\, Eastern Kingbirds\, Warblers (including Yellow\, Wilson’s\, Blue-winged\, Northern Parula\, Black and White\, American Redstart\, Blackpoll\, etc)\, and Vireos\, as well as Bluebirds and Tree Swallows tending nest boxes erected by Bear. \nWalks will take place rain or shine. Bring your binoculars! \nMeet on the west side of the playing fields at Allen’s Meadow. Park in front of the Field 6 sign. \nEvent dates: April 18\, April 27\, May 6  and May 16 from 8 a.m.-10 a.m. \nRegistration is required.
