SUMMARY:Norwalk River Dam Removal Tour
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, June 4 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. come see first-hand how the Norwalk River is being reborn thanks to the dam removal currently taking place and habitat restoration efforts spanning back more than three decades. Join Trout Unlimited and Save the Sound for a walking tour of the river at Merwin Meadows Park. This event is free\, open to the public and all are welcome\, including families and children. \nThe casual walk along the river trail will highlight past stream restoration sites\, ongoing native tree planting projects and – most exciting – an overview of the dam removal currently taking place to the river to sea-run fish and other aquatic species. If luck and weather holds\, attendees may also spot native sea lamprey that have been spawning in the river for the first time in 125 years after the successful removal of the Flock Dam downstream in Norwalk in 2018. \nThe talk and tour will also celebrate the success of the partnership with the town of Wilton\, Wilton Land Conservation Trust\, Wilton Go Green\, Norwalk River Watershed Association\, Southwest Conservation District\, Norwalk River Valley Trail and many more local and community partners who have made this decades-long work possible. \nRegister on the Mianus Chapter Trout Unlimited website. \nFounded in 1973\, the Mianus Chapter of Trout Unlimited is a grassroots conservation nonprofit organization with more than 5\,000 members and supporters in the towns of Greenwich\, Stamford\, Darien\, New Canaan\, Norwalk\, Wilton and Ridgefield. The Parade is part of Be You\, a series of events organized by Wilton Pride in collaboration with town organizations and businesses to celebrate Pride Month in June. \nStart out at the trailhead on Rt. 7 at Wolfpit Road\, best accessed from across from the commuter parking lot in Wilton. Once there\, participants will check-in with registration\, be motivated to get into the parade spirit (including a selfie booth full with props and swag)\, and encouraged to enter the ‘Best’ contests (details below). \nThen paraders will take their Pride to the Trail! \nWalk\, dance\, run\, bike\, stroll\, roll\, and enjoy the beautiful NRVT. DESCRIPTION:Join Woodcock Nature Center staff member and avid birder Tommy McCarthy for a guided birdwatching walk! Fall means birds are migrating back to their southern homes\, so species will be stopping here in Connecticut to refuel for the long journey ahead. On this walk we will talk about how birds prepare for migration\, learn about some of the species traveling back to the tropics\, and discuss what birds will be remaining with us or arriving for the winter. If you are new to birdwatching\, you are sure to learn about at least one species you have never heard of! DESCRIPTION:Join the Norwalk River Watershed Association for 3 free spring migration bird walks led by expert birder\, conservationist\, master gardener intern\, and Wilton resident Joe Bear. \nBear will lead participants on a leisurely 2-hour walk through the diverse habitats this well-known birding hot spot has to offer – open fields\, woodlands\, edges\, pond and swamp – to seek out returning summer residents\, those on their way to northern nesting grounds\, and maybe a vagrant or two. \nPrevious spring walks have yielded a wide variety of species including both Orchard and Baltimore Orioles\, Bobolink\, Indigo Bunting\, Scarlet Tanager\, Eastern Kingbird\, Rose-breasted Grosbeak\, Flycatchers\, Vireos and a variety of colorful Warblers. We’ll also get a chance to see up close Eastern Bluebirds and Tree Swallows vying for one of the 12 nest boxes erected by Bear in and around the Little Bluestem Meadow. \nRegister online.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Norwalk River Watershed Association for 3 free spring migration bird walks led by expert birder\, conservationist\, master gardener intern\, and Wilton resident Joe Bear. \nBear will lead participants on a leisurely 2-hour walk through the diverse habitats this well-known birding hot spot has to offer – open fields\, woodlands\, edges\, pond and swamp – to seek out returning summer residents\, those on their way to northern nesting grounds\, and maybe a vagrant or two. \nPrevious spring walks have yielded a wide variety of species including both Orchard and Baltimore Orioles\, Bobolink\, Indigo Bunting\, Scarlet Tanager\, Eastern Kingbird\, Rose-breasted Grosbeak\, Flycatchers\, Vireos and a variety of colorful Warblers. We’ll also get a chance to see up close Eastern Bluebirds and Tree Swallows vying for one of the 12 nest boxes erected by Bear in and around the Little Bluestem Meadow. \nRegister online.

DESCRIPTION:Join Woodcock Nature Center for a free guided hike in honor of CT Trails Day — a two-day event on the first weekend in June every year. \nWoodcock’s Educator and birdwatching enthusiast Tommy McCarthy will lead hikers of all ages and abilities through the varied and picturesque terrain of the Woodcock preserve in honor of this special day. Enjoy the flora and fauna and one another’s company while getting questions answered along the trail as they arise. \nThis event is free. Registration is required. Dress for the weather as the event will be held rain or shine. Leashed dogs welcome. \nThis program is being run in partnership with the CT Forest and Park Association.

DESCRIPTION:Join expert birder\, conservationist\, master gardener\, and Wilton resident Joe Bear for this free series of fall migration bird walks in search of birds making a migration stopover at Allen’s Meadow on their way south to their wintering grounds\, some as far as the pampas grasslands of South America. Joe will lead us on a leisurely two-hour walk through the diverse habitats this well-known birding hot spot has to offer — open fields/meadows\, woodland edges\, wetlands\, and of course the community gardens which are often teaming with migrants. Fall sightings in recent years have included Bobolinks\, Dickcissels\, Indigo Buntings\, a variety of warblers\, flycatchers\, and sparrows\, as well as several species of soaring raptors including the Bald Eagle.\n\nPlease register online.\n\nThe event is drizzle or shine. Bring binoculars and park in front of the Allen’s Meadow Field 6 sign.
