SUMMARY:Woodcock Nature Center Invites The Community To Participate in FrogWatch USA
DESCRIPTION:Woodcock Nature Center is proud to announce its role as a participating chapter of FrogWatch USA\, the national citizen science initiative that empowers community members to help monitor and protect local frog and toad populations. \nFrogWatch USA\, a longstanding program managed by the Akron Zoo and part of a nationwide network of chapters\, invites individuals\, families\, and nature lovers to explore wetlands in their communities\, learn to identify amphibian calls\, and contribute valuable data to a scientific database used by researchers studying wetland health and amphibian populations. \nAspiring citizen scientists can register for upcoming FrogWatch USA volunteer training sessions tailored to all experience levels. These trainings will equip participants with the skills to identify frogs and toads by their unique calls\, select monitoring sites\, and record observations. \nCurrent sessions include: \n\nSaturday\, Feb. 28 – 1-2:30 p.m. at Woodcock Nature Center\nTuesday\, Mar. 3 – 6:30-8 p.m. Online via Zoom\n\nParticipation in FrogWatch USA does not require prior scientific experience just a curiosity and dedication to learning about local amphibians. \nFrogs and toads play essential roles in forest and wetland ecosystems as both predators and prey\, and serve as key indicators of environmental health. However\, many species have experienced significant declines in recent years due to habitat loss and environmental stressors. The data collected by FrogWatch USA volunteers helps scientists better understand population trends\, threats\, and conservation needs at local and national scales. \nFor more details or to register for trainings\, visit the Woodcock Nature Center website or contact Educator Tommy McCarthy at tmccarthy@woodcocknaturecenter.org.

SUMMARY:Driving for Neurodiverse Learners [Webinar]
DESCRIPTION:A driving license means so much more than simply being able to drive. It represents freedom\, independence and is a sign of adulthood. He will address the needs of neurodiverse teens and young adults as they contemplate becoming a licensed driver. He will also focus on the strategies he uses for driving and how driving has opened his world to new heights. \nWednesday\, March 15 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. \nRegister online. \nPresented by SPED*NET

SUMMARY:Webinar with Speech-Language Pathologist Nancy Schwartz\, PhD: Basic Inferring of Information: Importance for Reading and for Life
DESCRIPTION:Join SPED*NET for this webinar\, “Basic Inferring of Information (Importance for Reading and for Life)” \nMany children\, especially those who are black-and-white thinkers\, have trouble with drawing inferences: the ability to see and process what lies “between the lines.” Learning to infer information is essential for our children to be able to think clearly\, to make good decisions\, to solve concrete problems\, to solve social problems\, and to perform well academically. \nSpeech-language pathologist Nancy Z. Schwartz\, Ph.D.\, will discuss how learning to infer information is the key to being an active\, independent participant in life\, beginning in preschool and moving on to grade school\, college and beyond. \nThere is no charge for participation in this event. Register online. \nThe event is presented by SPED*NET Wilton in partnership with the Wilton Public Schools and Newtown Sped PTA.

SUMMARY:Free Webinar: Not Your Mother's Hip Replacement [SPONSORED]
DESCRIPTION:Are you living with hip pain? If you are experiencing severe hip pain\, you may be considering a hip joint replacement. In this online presentation\, Jonathan Berliner\, MD\, an orthopedic surgeon\, joint replacement specialist and Director of the Orthopaedic & Neurosurgery Specialists (ONS) Outpatient Joint Replacement Center\, will discuss how the latest advances in hip joint replacement along with new techniques and technology make today’s procedures safer and require a shorter recovery period. Procedure outcomes now last longer than ever before. \nArthritis is the number one cause of disability in the U.S.\, impacting over 50 million Americans. Hip arthritis typically occurs in adults ages 45 and older\, when the cartilage that cushions the joint breaks down and eventually wears away. Characterized by pain and stiffness\, severe cases of arthritis can be profoundly debilitating. If conservative treatments for hip joint pain fail to bring relief or the pain is too severe\, hip replacement surgery may be recommended. Hip replacement surgery is a very successful procedure with high patient satisfaction. Patients report pain relief and restored mobility post-surgery. \nJoin the free Zoom webinar with Dr. Berliner on Wednesday\, July 13 from 6-7 p.m.

SUMMARY:From Physical Therapy to Knee Replacement: Today’s Treatment Options for Knee Arthritis
DESCRIPTION:Living with knee pain? If you are experiencing severe knee pain\, you may be considering a total joint replacement. In this virtual presentation\, Orthopaedic Surgeon and Joint Replacement Specialist Kevin Choo\, M.D.\, Orthopaedic & Neurosurgery Specialists (ONS)\, will discuss both non-surgical and surgical options for chronic knee pain and osteoarthritis. Non-surgical options include medications\, therapy\, injections and bracing. He will also explain when surgery is the best solution and what types of knee surgeries are performed today. \nNot too long ago it was common for a nearly two-week hospital stay after a joint replacement. Over time\, it decreased to about two to five days. Now there are other options including ambulatory surgery. \nThe free webinar is being held on Wednesday\, June 8\, from 6-7 p.m. \nChoo is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in primary hip and knee replacement for the treatment of degenerative osteoarthritis\, inflammatory arthritis\, avascular necrosis\, hip dysplasia\, and post-traumatic arthrosis. He earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago and completed his internship and residency at UCSF (University of California — San Francisco). He received fellowship training in Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement at the Rothman Institute in Philadelphia\, PA

SUMMARY:Executive Function Skills Your Teens Need Before Graduating from High School
DESCRIPTION:Join Mary Murphy\, PhD\, a licensed clinical psychologist\, on Wednesday\, Mar. 30\, from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. on Zoom for a discussion on the executive function skills your teens need to learn before graduating from high school and how you can assist them in developing and implementing helpful strategies. \nWe use executive function skills every day to study\, work\, manage the ins and outs of daily life\, and become independent learners. These vital mental skills — the “management system of the brain” — include working memory\, cognitive flexibility\, and impulse control and are responsible for skills like paying attention\, organizing\, planning\, and prioritizing. \nHaving trouble with EF skills is common\, both for typical learners and for those who think and learn differently. A teen can struggle with EF skills even without a formal diagnosis of a learning disability or ADHD. In addition\, everyone with ADHD has EF difficulties and most students with other learning challenges also struggle with them. It doesn’t mean these kids are lazy or not intelligent. What it does mean\, however\, is that these kids need specific help acquiring and mastering EF skills and strategies. \nResearch shows that college students with EF challenges experience substantial academic and social-emotional difficulties throughout their college years. \nPresented by SPED*NET Wilton in partnership with Wilton Youth Council\, Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton Library\, and Newtown Sped PTA. \nTo register\, visit this website.

DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Wilton Historical Society in collaboration with Wilton Go Green on Zoom on Thursday\, Feb. 17 from 1 p.m.-2 p.m. \nIt’s the age-old adage: “the greenest house is the one already built.” Historic houses are inherently sustainable\, with features built in to capitalize on using and retaining energy. Historic houses can also be updated in appropriate ways to make them even more efficient\, some of which you can do yourself. Join us as we share helpful tips and case studies to help owners save money on their bills\, help the environment\, and maintain their homes — all at the same time! \nDon’t miss this detailed presentation by two experts! \nMarena Wisniewski serves as the State Register Coordinator for the Connecticut State Historic Preservation Office\, as well as an environmental reviewer and coordinator of the Women’s and Minority History Trail. Prior to coming to Hartford\, she was the Preservation & Public Engagement Officer at the Providence Preservation Society\, as well as a private consultant serving New York City. She holds an MS in Historic Preservation from Columbia University and a MA in World History from NYU. With a specific concentration in materials science\, she spends most of her free time researching building performance and arguing with window salesmen. \nTodd Levine is an architectural historian with a Master’s degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Georgia. Todd has worked at inspecting\, studying\, and preserving Connecticut’s historic resources since 2003. Todd was the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation’s (now Preservation Connecticut) Preservation Services Officer from 2006-2009 and from 2009-2012 he was Director of the Historic Barns of Connecticut program\, one of the most comprehensive barn programs in the nation. SUMMARY:Encouraging Responsibility and Independence — The Importance of Positive Communication at Home\, at School and in the Social Arena (ZOOM)
DESCRIPTION:As parents we want to do a good enough job guiding\, shaping and preparing our kids so that they don’t actually NEED us anymore! Keeping our kids’ eventual independence in mind allows us to provide reasonable parameters for them\, help them set goals\, and titrate the responsibilities they can assume. A key part of this process is strengthening our own positive communication skillshow we encourage and reinforce our kids’ development in these essential areas. \nSchool psychologist David P. Sylvestro\, MA\, CSP\, will discuss ways parents can promote responsibility and independence through positive interactions with their kids who have LD\, ADHD and Executive Function challenges. \nSylvester served as school psychologist at Eagle Hill Schools for over 35 years and currently is serving in that position at The Southport School. He facilitates individual and group counseling sessions\, parent support groups and Dads Only groups; provides training and staff development to professionals; and presents at LD conferences worldwide. \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:SPED*NET: Is She on the Spectrum? Identifying and Helping Girls with “Asperger’s” and Non-Verbal Learning Disabilities (NVLD)
DESCRIPTION:Know any bright girls who are inflexible\, argumentative\, and emotionally over-reactive or who shut down at times? Who have been called oppositional\, avoidant or attention-seeking? Who can’t quite fit in with peers? They may have “Asperger’s\,” have NLD\, or be on the autism spectrum. \nA proper diagnosis allows us to better understand and help these girls\, rather than blame them. Instead of constantly criticizing them\, we can listen with an awareness of spectrum issues\, understand and anticipate their needs\, and provide the accommodations and environment that will help them better navigate the mainstream world. If the girls feel more accepted for who they are\, they can have higher self-esteem and learn to advocate for themselves more successfully. \nOn Wednesday\, Jan. 12\, 10-11 a.m. via Zoom\, licensed psychologist Marcia Eckerd\, PhD\, will discuss why girls are so often misinterpreted and underdiagnosed and why an accurate diagnosis is important for the girls themselves\, educators\, clinicians\, and especially parents. \nPlease register by using the Website link.

SUMMARY:Transition Planning and College Readiness
DESCRIPTION:SPED*NET Wilton is glad to welcome Jane Thierfeld Brown\, EdD\, in Part II of our webinar series\, Post High School and College Planning: Helping Our Students with Disabilities Prepare for Their Future and Find the Right Path. \nTransitioning from high school to college or employment can be difficult for any student\, but especially for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The structure and predictability provided in high school are gone. The social and academic supports these students may have relied on during their high school years are suddenly removed. The organization\, communication\, social\, and “life” skills required in a college or employment setting are heightened. Our role as “parent” changes legally when our “child” turns 18. For all these reasons\, it is important to encourage students with ASD to develop critical academic\, social\, and life skills while in high school so they can transition to college or employment successfully. \nIf you missed the first webinar with Dr. Brown\, you can view the recording online.
