In this virtual presentation\, Orthopaedic Surgeon and Joint Replacement Specialist Kevin Choo\, M.D.\, Orthopaedic & Neurosurgery Specialists (ONS)\, will discuss both non-surgical and surgical options for chronic knee pain and osteoarthritis. Non-surgical options include medications\, therapy\, injections and bracing. He will also explain when surgery is the best solution and what types of knee surgeries are performed today. \nNot too long ago it was common for a nearly two-week hospital stay after a joint replacement. Over time\, it decreased to about two to five days. SUMMARY:Executive Function Skills Your Teens Need Before Graduating from High School
DESCRIPTION:Join Mary Murphy\, PhD\, a licensed clinical psychologist\, on Wednesday\, Mar. 30\, from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. on Zoom for a discussion on the executive function skills your teens need to learn before graduating from high school and how you can assist them in developing and implementing helpful strategies. \nWe use executive function skills every day to study\, work\, manage the ins and outs of daily life\, and become independent learners. These vital mental skills — the “management system of the brain” — include working memory\, cognitive flexibility\, and impulse control and are responsible for skills like paying attention\, organizing\, planning\, and prioritizing. \nHaving trouble with EF skills is common\, both for typical learners and for those who think and learn differently. A teen can struggle with EF skills even without a formal diagnosis of a learning disability or ADHD. In addition\, everyone with ADHD has EF difficulties and most students with other learning challenges also struggle with them. It doesn’t mean these kids are lazy or not intelligent. DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Wilton Historical Society in collaboration with Wilton Go Green on Zoom on Thursday\, Feb. 17 from 1 p.m.-2 p.m. \nIt’s the age-old adage: “the greenest house is the one already built.” Historic houses are inherently sustainable\, with features built in to capitalize on using and retaining energy. Historic houses can also be updated in appropriate ways to make them even more efficient\, some of which you can do yourself. Join us as we share helpful tips and case studies to help owners save money on their bills\, help the environment\, and maintain their homes — all at the same time! \nDon’t miss this detailed presentation by two experts! \nMarena Wisniewski serves as the State Register Coordinator for the Connecticut State Historic Preservation Office\, as well as an environmental reviewer and coordinator of the Women’s and Minority History Trail. Prior to coming to Hartford\, she was the Preservation & Public Engagement Officer at the Providence Preservation Society\, as well as a private consultant serving New York City. She holds an MS in Historic Preservation from Columbia University and a MA in World History from NYU. With a specific concentration in materials science\, she spends most of her free time researching building performance and arguing with window salesmen. \nTodd Levine is an architectural historian with a Master’s degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Georgia. Todd has worked at inspecting\, studying\, and preserving Connecticut’s historic resources since 2003. Todd was the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation’s (now Preservation Connecticut) Preservation Services Officer from 2006-2009 and from 2009-2012 he was Director of the Historic Barns of Connecticut program\, one of the most comprehensive barn programs in the nation. DESCRIPTION:Know any bright girls who are inflexible\, argumentative\, and emotionally over-reactive or who shut down at times? Who have been called oppositional\, avoidant or attention-seeking? Who can’t quite fit in with peers? They may have “Asperger’s\,” have NLD\, or be on the autism spectrum. \nA proper diagnosis allows us to better understand and help these girls\, rather than blame them. Instead of constantly criticizing them\, we can listen with an awareness of spectrum issues\, understand and anticipate their needs\, and provide the accommodations and environment that will help them better navigate the mainstream world. SUMMARY:Healthy Connections:  An Inside Scoop on Adolescents and Addiction
DESCRIPTION:New experiences and relationships are essential for helping our tweens\, teens and young adults develop appropriately and reach their full potential. As parents\, we may be concerned that our kids are changing too quickly – or that their panoply of experiences will be harmful\, especially when they involve alcohol and drugs. \nIn this presentation and conversation\, Anthony Nave\, LCSW\, will explain: how our adolescents’ social\, emotional and brain development can increase their risk for substance abuse/use disorders; what signs of struggle to look out for; how to start a conversation about drugs and alcohol; and what resources are available\, if further help is needed. Nave will also discuss misconceptions surrounding addiction and the contemporary “medical model” of addiction. \nNave\, a licensed clinical social worker with master’s degrees in Educational Psychology and Clinical Social Work\, serves as Senior Manager\, Outpatient Services\, at Mountainside Treatment Center. He is advanced certified in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)\, is currently an EMDR Consultant-in-Training\, and is experienced in medication-assisted treatment\, co-occurring disorders\, and adolescent programming. Prior to joining Mountainside\, he taught in an alternative therapeutic school\, where he helped youth with mental health and cognitive disorders. At Mountainside\, Nave designs curricula for clinical programming and incorporates neurobiology and a trauma-responsive framework into one-on-one counseling\, group therapy\, family sessions\, and supervision. SUMMARY:“Longest way round is the shortest way home”:  Four-Part Lecture Series on James Joyce’s 'Ulysses'
DESCRIPTION:Mark Schenker of Yale College\, returns to Wilton Library with a virtual lecture series on James Joyce’s Ulysses viewed through the lens of Homer’s epic. While James Joyce’s Ulysses (1922) differs significantly from Homer’s Odyssey (8th century BCE)\, they are intimately joined in the depiction of a homeward journey that is extended and delayed by incidents variously mundane and momentous. In each case\, the final homecoming is informed by all that has transpired to bring the hero back to where he first set out. \nThere is no charge for the program.
