SUMMARY:Wilton Quaker Meeting Mother's Day Peace Stroll
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Quaker Meeting for the annual Mother’s Day Peace Stroll on Sunday\, May 9\, 1:00 pm. \nMeet at the Stroffolino Bridge next to the Maritime Aquarium in South Norwalk in festive attire with signs of peace. Bring your mother\, grandmother\, kids\, partners\, spouses\, neighbors\, and dogs for a lively stroll through South Norwalk after we read a few proclamations on the bridge. \nMost people think that Mother’s Day was a holiday invented by Hallmark to sell more cards. But\, in fact\, Mother’s Day for Peace was instituted in 1870 by Julia Ward Howe as a response to the carnage of the Civil War.  She called on women to come together to commemorate their dead and to find “the means whereby the great human family can live together in peace.” \nOur Mother’s Day Peace Stroll will step off from the bridge at 1:15 p.m. and stroll along Washington St.\, then take a right on Main. We will stop briefly on the steps of Old City hall to take photos and read some proclamations and then return down Washington St. to the bridge. \nThis is the beginning of our campaign to encourage US Representative Jim Himes to support a 10% cut in the military budget to redirect funds to meeting human needs post-pandemic. Senators Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal supported an amendment to the Defense Authorization bill in 2020 to make the 10% cut but Himes did not. It is vital in these times of great need that we ask the military to make some cuts.

SUMMARY:Spymistresses: The Story of Allied Women Spies of WWII
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library on Wednesday\, March 1 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for unique insight into Allied women spies in WWII. Spies belong to a special group of people with flexible identities\, elastic morals and what has been referred to by some as situational ethics. Many take dangerous risks\, complete their missions\, and live to tell the tale while others don’t. During WWII\, several women risked their lives to work within enemy territory to uncover secrets. Some were professionally trained\, and others were simply masters of intrigue and deception. They covertly served the Allies and made significant contributions to the war. Learn about some of these women who worked in the European and Pacific theaters of the war. \nJohn Cilio has been telling the stories of history for over a decade. He is a skilled historian with a collection of 15\,000 WWII photos and their press releases. He has published seven books ranging from women working in WWII and their impact on today’s business world to the history of Cessna aircraft. \nRegistration required. Please register online.  For more information\, email Andrea Sato.

SUMMARY:Women in Film
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate Women’s History Month at Wilton Library on Wednesday\, March 8 at 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with a dynamic look at women in film. \nWomen have always been a force in filmmaking\, but often their talents were suppressed by a male dominated industry. Alice Guy-Blanche was a pioneer filmmaker and has paved the way to opening doors over the decades for filmmakers of the silent era like Lois Weber and Chaplin protege Mabel Norman. But until the rise of feminism in the late 60’s\, female filmmakers’ voices were suppressed until there were directors such as Penny Marshall\, Katheryn Bigelow\, Sofia Coppola\, and others. \nGreg Blank\, a Long Island based filmmaker\, film historian\, and lecturer will examine the dynamics of sexism in the film industry\, the challenges women have met and often overcome\, and the artistic achievements of female directors over the years. \nRegistration is required. Register online. For more information\, email Andrea Sato.

SUMMARY:WLA/WHS Scholarly Series: A Rocky Road: The Struggle for Rights in America – Dr. Aimee Loiselle
DESCRIPTION:US Women Demand Equity: From Voting Rights to Work Conditions – Dr. Aimee Loiselle\, Central Connecticut State University. \nIn the 16th year of collaboration between Wilton Library and Wilton Historical Society\, the scholarly lecture series entitled “A Rocky Road: The Struggle for Rights in America” will focus on how women from different backgrounds and regions have pursued equity by different means. \nDuring this program\, Aimee Loiselle\, an assistant professor at Central Connecticut State University\, will discuss how even the suffrage movement and passage of the 19th Amendment\, granting women the federal right to vote in 1920\, emerged from many tactics heavily shaped by race\, class\, and geography. Its passage fueled more efforts by women\, both to use the vote and to highlight its inadequacy for addressing problems like unfair work conditions and poverty. Middle-class white women\, Black women\, and working-class women had points of collaboration and division throughout the 20th century as they demanded equity on different terms. \nDr. Loiselle is an award-winning historian. She studies modern US history with an interest in women workers and attention to intersections of gender\, race\, class\, and citizenship. \nThe moderator is Max Gabrielson. A reception will follow the talk. There is no charge to attend\, but donations are welcome. Visit the Wilton Library website for additional dates\, topic and speaker details\, and registration. Registration is required for each individual session. \nAdditional dates: \nMarch 26:  The Long Road toward LGBTQ+ Rights and Equality in the United States — Dr. Kelly Marino

SUMMARY:Mark Schenker - “We Too Are Here”: 100 Years of Great American Novels by Women [Zoom]
DESCRIPTION:Mark Schenker will take a reset in his ongoing lecture series at Wilton Library on major American novels of the 20th century\, which reached the late 1950s last fall. For this spring and summer\, he will present two connected four-part series on eight American novels\, all by critically acclaimed woman novelists. These series will be offered via Zoom with a bonus: the fourth and eighth sessions will be in-person in the Brubeck Room (as well as on Zoom) with a short reception after the lecture to chat with Schenker and each other. \nThe titles span a full century and bring in considerations of race and ethnicity (African-American\, Jewish-American\, Native-American)\, and of immigration (from China\, Central Europe\, Mexico). The settings of these stories represent a striking array of American cities\, states\, and regions. \nTaken together\, these works of fiction invite you to think critically about the limitations of the idea of The Great American Novel and to embrace the broadest meaning of the word pluribus (“many”) in the traditional American motto: E Pluribus Unum. \nAttendees are not expected to read or reread all or even any of the novels\, but a familiarity with them will of course make the lectures more meaningful. \nSpring series:\nApril 12 – My Antonia\, Willa Cather\nApril 19 – Wise Blood\, Flannery O’Connor\nMay 3 – The Woman Warrior\, Maxine Hong Kingston\nMay 10 – Song of Solomon\, Toni Morrison. \nJune series:\nJune 8 – Housekeeping\, Marilynne Robinson\nJune 15 – The House on Mango Street\, Sandra Cisneros\nJune 22 – The Shawl\, Cynthia Ozick\nJune 29 – The Night Watchman\, Louise Erdrich \nRegistration is required. Register on the Wilton Library website or call 203.762.6334. As convenience\, you will automatically be registered for all eight sessions. For more information\, contact Michael Bellacosa.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Stephanie Kramer - Carry Strong: An Empowered Approach to Navigating Pregnancy and Work
DESCRIPTION:Stephanie Kramer is the author of Carry Strong: An Empowered Approach to Navigating Pregnancy and Work. This ‘labor’ or love was written over three years late at night and during her children’s naps because of her desire to create a groundswell of support. With original research and hundreds of inspiring interviews\, she does just that— sharing five powerful principles to find perspective\, create your balance\, cultivate community\, communicate your needs\, and embrace your shift in identity throughout each phase of pregnancy\, starting with the moment you decide you want to become a working mom-to-be. In Carry Strong\, Kramer flips the script. This isn’t about powering through pregnancy at work. It’s about being powerful and pregnant at work. \nKramer is a tenured beauty industry executive today serving as the Chief Human Resources Officer of L’Oréal USA in New York City and an adjunct professor of management communication in the graduate business program at the Fashion Institute of Technology. She is the proud mother of two young children and deeply believes that you can do it all\, not at the same time\, and absolutely not alone. \nThis author talk is co-sponsored by the Wilton Woman’s Club. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nThe media sponsor of our author talks is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nRegistration is required. Register on the Wilton Library’s website or call 203.762.6350.
