SUMMARY:LECTURE: The Movement was a Great “Mosaic”–CT Women and Stories from the Suffrage Campaign
DESCRIPTION:A lecture by Dr. Kelly Marino\, presented by the Wilton League of Women Voters and the Wilton Historical Society \nWith 2020 marking the Centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment\, the Wilton League of Women Voters and the Wilton Historical Society have partnered to present a talk by Dr. Kelly Marino. “The Movement was a Great ‘Mosaic’: Connecticut Women and Stories from the Suffrage Campaign” will take place on Saturday\, Feb. 29 at 4 p.m.. \nWell-known suffragist and later Ridgefield\, CT resident Alice Paul once commented that she always felt that the women’s movement was a sort of “mosaic”. Each person “puts in one little stone” and makes a unique contribution important to fueling the larger effort. \nMarino’s presentation explores the history of the suffrage movement in Connecticut by highlighting the stories of several key women who contributed to the campaign in different ways. It includes colorful narratives from their biographies and backgrounds as well as their tactics and reform efforts to promote women’s right to vote and other causes beyond to improve the lives of women and children in the United States. \nIn addition to recognizing the Suffrage movement\, the event will also serve to celebrate the founding of the League of Women Voters on Feb. 14\, 1920 plus the establishment of the Wilton branch 40 years ago. The location is the Wilton Historical Society\, and the presentation will be followed by a reception. \nAll are welcome. Please register via email or call 203.762.7257. \nDr. Kelly Marino is a historian of 20th century America with a focus on women’s history and the history of sexuality. A native of Connecticut\, she is passionate about state and local history. She received her BSED and CT Teacher’s Certification from CCSU in 2008 and MA from the University of Massachusetts\, Amherst in 2010. She graduated with her Ph.D. from Binghamton University (SUNY) in 2016 and started work at Sacred Heart University in the Fall of 2019. SUMMARY:Anne Gardiner Perkins Author Talk–"Yale Needs Women: How the First Group of Girls Rewrote the Rules of an Ivy League Giant"
DESCRIPTION:The year 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of Yale University first admitting women students. In the summer of 1969\, young women across the country sent in applications to Yale University for the first time. The Ivy League institution dedicated to graduating ‘1\,000 male leaders’ each year had finally decided to open its doors to the nation’s top female students. \nThe landmark decision was a huge step forward for women’s equality in education. However\, this first class of women found themselves immersed in an overwhelmingly male culture they were unprepared to face. Yale Needs Women\, an unflinching account of a group of young women striving for change\, is an inspiring story of strength\, resilience\, and courage that continues to resonate today. \nAnne Gardiner Perkins attended Yale University\, where she earned her BA in history and was the first woman editor-in-chief of the Yale Daily News. She is also a Rhodes Scholar and completed a BA in modern history at Balliol College\, Oxford University. She has spent her life in education\, from urban high school teacher to state-level policy maker. She received her Ph.D. in higher education at UMass Boston and has presented papers on higher education at leading conferences. A Q&A will follow the talk. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

SUMMARY:Woman's Club Invites All to First '19-'20 Meeting with Free Fall Fashion Show
DESCRIPTION:A Fall Fashion Show kicks off the Wilton Woman’s Club new year on Monday\, Sept. 9 at 10 a.m.\, at the WEPCO complex (48 New Canaan Rd.). The fashion show event is free for all Wilton women\, current members\, and those interested in learning more or joining the club. \nRefreshments will be served\, and there will be plenty of time to meet new friends and mingle with old. \nMembers of the Woman’s Club will be modeling the latest fall style featuring clothes from local boutiques ‘B’ Chic\, Blue Star Bazaar\, Open House\, and Snappy Gator. On hand for hair touch-ups and makeup will be Janet Montalbano of Let’s Make Up Wilton. Attendees will be able to chat with Janet and other experts from the stores on the newest trends. \n“At Blue Star Bazaar we try to balance current trends with comfortable\, classic\, flattering styles that always work\,” says Megan Abrahamsen\, owner of Blue Star Bazaar. “Some of the must-have trends and pieces for this fall include animal prints (from leopard to reptile); cozy\, plush textures in pullovers and sweaters; long pleated skirts; and faux fur–from jackets to accessories.” \nOpen House has a different take on the season. “We are not tied to the current fashion trends. Instead\, we shop the market looking for pieces we know our customers will love\,” says the store’s Leslie Hueglin. “This season is all about comfort while still looking stylish. Basic bottoms paired with a new sweater or top will take you from the school pickup line to drinks with friends.” \n‘B’ Chic owner Erica Malhotra\, just celebrated 13 years in Wilton and the eighth year in a row her store was named “Best Jeans in Fairfield County\,” so naturally she’s excited for fall and it officially being jeans season.  “We carry styles that are effortlessly chic and comfortable. Big this season is the crop flare and the high-waist straight leg in a vintage wash–AKA the “Mom” jean. Boot-cut is back\, and black-coated jeans are on-trend for evenings out.” \nSnappy Gator has great looks from their fall season lineup\, from casual to cocktail and a stylist to help with every detail. \nDuring Monday’s meeting\, the Woman’s Club executive board will also preview the 2019-20 social events\, including a fall trip\, holiday shopping night\, holiday luncheon\, a wine/chocolate event in February and a spring outing in May. All of this culminates in the club’s Annual Fashion Show Fundraiser in April. Last year’s Spring Fundraiser raised $28\,000 for the Wilton Land Conservation Trust and their project\, Save 183 Ridgefield Road. \nCommunity Service chairs Suzy Curtice and Wendy Nadel will outline numerous ways club members can get involved. These include stocking the Wilton Social Services food pantry; serving seniors lunch at Ogden House; sorting donations at Person-to-Person Clothing Center in Darien; helping clients shop at the Person-to-Person food pantry in Norwalk; as well as preparing meals for delivery to homebound Wilton residents over the holidays. \nMoms and daughters can also find opportunities to volunteer together through the Woman’s Club Junior Leadership Program\, such as helping out with Minks to Sinks\, and assembling and delivering Thanksgiving and Holiday meals to Wilton seniors. \nMembership in the Wilton Woman’s Club offers many ways to give back to the community and help serve others in Wilton and the surrounding towns. For more information about the club’s activities and membership visit the Woman’s Club website.

SUMMARY:Learn to Reset\, Recharge and Reconnect with Your Community
DESCRIPTION:Our modern conveniences are overwhelming us. We own twice the amount of stuff we did 50 years ago\, purging our spaces only to mindlessly click and fill them again. Social media overuse frazzles psychologists and impedes genuine connection. Online dating is at an all-time high across age groups; yet one-third of users never swipe right into offline romance. Americans bill more out-of-office hours than any other advanced economy\, and auto-binge-watching has replaced the much-anticipated movie marathon. \nIn a world architected for “overwhelm\,” it’s no wonder we can feel exhausted and unsure. We prize sisterhood and community among our greatest assets. Yet\, too often we get stuck in ruts and time passes swiftly. We feel a call to help others but struggle to find the time or energy to move forward and create lasting change. \nTo learn more about how you can reset\, recharge and reconnect with your community\, come to Wilton Library on Thursday\, May 9 at 7 p.m.. Wilton’s own Jacqueline Raposo will be speaking about The Me\, Without: A Year Exploring Habit\, Healing\, and Happiness\, her first book. \nRaposo will talk about how our brains can sometimes accidentally wire us for inactivity. She’ll explain what we can do to reset\, regroup and recharge ourselves first and foremost. Then\, with this renewed focus on “self\,” we can better connect to the communities we wish to serve. \nRaposo is an expert interviewer and writer of articles for Food & Wine\, Saveur and Cosmopolitan. She is the producer and co-host of “Love Bites Radio\,” and she connects chronic illness/disability advocates with protest events as the co-founder of #MarchingWithMe. \nAdmission is $20\, $10 for students. Please register in advance\, as seating is limited. Mail your check payable to “P.E.O. Chapter W” to Del Overby\, 105 Pine Ridge Rd.\, Wilton\, CT 06897\, or register online (a small fee applies). \nA light dessert reception will follow\, with an opportunity to meet Raposo and purchase her book\, courtesy of Elm Street Books. \nThis event is a fundraiser sponsored by The PEO Sisterhood\, an international philanthropic and educational organization that promotes educational opportunities for women. All proceeds will benefit PEO grants\, awards and scholarships to support women’s education. For information about PEO\, email Debbie Zucco or visit the PEO website.
