SUMMARY:WHS Presents "Newsies"
DESCRIPTION:The Clune Center Auditorium will soon be flooded with newspapers\, suspenders\, song\, and dance as Wilton High School proudly presents Disney’s Newsies. The students and production team alike have been hard at work since February to create this electrifying production\, which pulses with excitement as a group of newsboys strike to be reasonably compensated for their daily labor. High energy dancing and feel-good songs by legendary composer Alan Menken offer toe-tapping delight as they guide the audience through this thrilling narrative. \nThe story is based on the real life newsies strike of 1899. It centers around charismatic newsboy Jack Kelly (Jack Parrotta) and his new friends\, siblings Davey (Ryan Lynn) and Les (Blake Baumel). After the conniving publisher Joseph Pulitzer (Brycen Addison) raises the price of newspapers for personal profit\, the newsboys refuse to enable his scheme. Jack Kelly\, aided by Davey’s smarts\, passionately leads the newsboys through a strike against the underhanded Pulitzer. Along the way\, romance ensues as Jack meets Katherine Plumber (Sarah Bates)\, a determined yet unknown young journalist who seizes the opportunity to finally cover a compelling story. \n“Audiences can expect to be wowed by the extraordinary talent Wilton High School has to offer\,” says director Meredith Walker. The production staff\, Walker and the students have worked diligently to ensure that the production provides audiences with a gripping portrayal of an inspiring tale.  \nPerformances are in the Clune Center Auditorium on Friday\, May 17 at 8 p.m.\, Saturday\, May 18 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.\, and Sunday\, May 19 at 4 p.m..  Tickets are $15 each at lunch waves for students\, $16.50 online and at the door one hour prior to each show; cash and check only.  \nTickets and information can be found online.

SUMMARY:Colonial Cookery and Customs for Kids at the Wilton Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:This Month:  Quick Preserving–From Jam to Pickles \nIn Colonial times\, surviving cold winter months with limited options for fresh food was a challenge–both for health and for the taste buds. Colonists employed a variety of effective food preservation techniques\, many of them dating back to ancient times\, from cold storage to preparations which included salting\, smoking\, potting\, drying\, pickling and preserving. \nAt this Wilton Historical Society Colonial Cookery and Customs for Kids workshop\, museum educator Laurie Walker will be discussing how the magic of acid (vinegar) and sweet (sugar) can extend the life of fresh fruits and vegetables. The kids will make “quick” dill pickles and strawberry jam–fun! \nThe Colonial Cookery and Customs for Kids workshop teaches kids a “reciept” (recipe) used in the Connecticut region. While the food is prepared\, they hear about Colonial manners\, morals and way of life. The monthly workshops feature relatively simple dishes made with local\, seasonal ingredients\, adapted for modern kitchens. All participants will sample their own cooking and take home recipe cards–as well as any leftovers! The children will learn how a Colonial kitchen would have operated\, in order to appreciate the modern conveniences we take for granted. Previous sessions have made bannock cakes\, pease porridge\, pickles\, an amulet of green peas\, apple tansey\, fairy butter\, pumpkin bread\, cranberry shortbread\, New Year’s “cakes”\, New England chowder\, hand pies\, cheese and ramp soufflé\, pea and watercress Rappahannock\, blackberry maslin\, thirded bread\, pound cake with “Oranges” juice\, maple cup custard\, pepper pot soup\, scalloped tomatoes\, dressed macaroni and cheese\, gingerbread cakes\, maple syrup tart and Johnny cakes. \nSuggested for ages 6-12. The cost for members is $10 and non-members is $15. Space is limited—please register by email or call 203.762.7257. \nDid You Know?  However you enjoy your pickle\, perhaps it was Thomas Jefferson that summarized it best:  “On a hot day in Virginia\, I know nothing more comforting than a fine spiced pickle\, brought up trout-like from the sparkling depths of the aromatic jar below the stairs of Aunt Sally’s cellar.”

SUMMARY:Mother’s Day Herb Planter Workshop for Kids
DESCRIPTION:Learning about herbs and woodworking with the Wilton Historical Society. \nThe Society’s 1750 Colonial Herb Garden is greening up\, and the scents of various culinary and medicinal plants tickle the nose. Time for a program for kids to learn about herbs and woodworking in a hands-on way! After some time in the garden\, the kids will embark on a woodworking project with museum educator Laurie Walker:  constructing a simple wooden box\, painting it\, and tucking in three pots of herbs–perfectly timed for Mother’s Day gifting. Children will help make their snack\, a savory parmesan shortbread flavored with herbs. \nThe workshop is suggested for children ages 6-12. \nThe cost for Wilton Historical Society members is $10 per child\, with a maximum of $25 per family; non-members’ cost is $15 per child\, with a maximum of $35 per family. Please register via email or by calling 203.762.7257. \nDid You Know? \nThe Colonial herb garden at the Wilton Historical Society’s Betts House\, splashed with color and fragrant with lavender and thyme\, is sight to behold in the spring and summer. The garden\, divided into sections for dyeing\, potpourri\, culinary\, and medicinal herbs\, is looking refreshed after a recent update to make it historically accurate to the year 1750. \nSome of the interesting plants that can be seen in the garden include Penny Royal (Mentha pulegium) a mint flavoring for soup; Rue (Ruta graveolens) for joint stiffness; Skirret (Sium sisarum) a flavoring for stews; and Wrinkled Rose (Rosa rugosa ‘rubra’) which provides Vitamin C to prevent scurvy. \nThe Wilton Historical Society welcomes any and all volunteers who would like to be part of the effort to maintain and sustain the Colonial herb garden. Please contact the Society at 203.762.7657 to become involved.

SUMMARY:Learn to Reset\, Recharge and Reconnect with Your Community
DESCRIPTION:Our modern conveniences are overwhelming us. We own twice the amount of stuff we did 50 years ago\, purging our spaces only to mindlessly click and fill them again. Social media overuse frazzles psychologists and impedes genuine connection. Online dating is at an all-time high across age groups; yet one-third of users never swipe right into offline romance. Americans bill more out-of-office hours than any other advanced economy\, and auto-binge-watching has replaced the much-anticipated movie marathon. \nIn a world architected for “overwhelm\,” it’s no wonder we can feel exhausted and unsure. We prize sisterhood and community among our greatest assets. Yet\, too often we get stuck in ruts and time passes swiftly. We feel a call to help others but struggle to find the time or energy to move forward and create lasting change. \nTo learn more about how you can reset\, recharge and reconnect with your community\, come to Wilton Library on Thursday\, May 9 at 7 p.m.. Wilton’s own Jacqueline Raposo will be speaking about The Me\, Without: A Year Exploring Habit\, Healing\, and Happiness\, her first book. \nRaposo will talk about how our brains can sometimes accidentally wire us for inactivity. She’ll explain what we can do to reset\, regroup and recharge ourselves first and foremost. Then\, with this renewed focus on “self\,” we can better connect to the communities we wish to serve. \nRaposo is an expert interviewer and writer of articles for Food & Wine\, Saveur and Cosmopolitan. She is the producer and co-host of “Love Bites Radio\,” and she connects chronic illness/disability advocates with protest events as the co-founder of #MarchingWithMe. \nAdmission is $20\, $10 for students. Please register in advance\, as seating is limited. Mail your check payable to “P.E.O. Chapter W” to Del Overby\, 105 Pine Ridge Rd.\, Wilton\, CT 06897\, or register online (a small fee applies). \nA light dessert reception will follow\, with an opportunity to meet Raposo and purchase her book\, courtesy of Elm Street Books. \nThis event is a fundraiser sponsored by The PEO Sisterhood\, an international philanthropic and educational organization that promotes educational opportunities for women. All proceeds will benefit PEO grants\, awards and scholarships to support women’s education. For information about PEO\, email Debbie Zucco or visit the PEO website.
