SUMMARY:Fall Semester with Mark Schenker: A Survey of Literary Utopias (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library online via Zoom as Mark Schenker takes us on a guided tour of several literary utopias and dystopias spanning several hundred years. \nEver since Sir Thomas More (1478-1535) created the word “utopia” in the early 16th century\, the double meaning of his coinage has informed centuries of Utopian literature in English. (The Greek outopia means “no place\,” while eutopia means “good place.”) Since More’s Utopia\, writers such as Jonathan Swift and Margaret Atwood have created imagined worlds that reveal the dystopian reality behind the utopian dream. \nAfter beginning with More’s masterpiece\, Schenker will survey other literary works from each of the past six centuries—books that engage the quest for societal perfection\, the limits of human aspiration\, and the various meanings of the old saying that “the perfect is the enemy of the good.” \nThe schedule for the series is below (please note that the sessions are not all on the same day of the week and also stretch from September to November):\nSept. 7 – Utopia\, Sir Thomas More\nSept. 14 – Gulliver’s Travels\, Jonathan Swift\nSept. 21 – Erewhon\, Samuel Butler\nSept. 28 – The Handmaid’s Tale\, Margaret Atwood\nOct. 3 – King Lear\, William Shakespeare\nOct. 10 – Station Eleven\, Emily St. John Mandel\nNov. 2 – Cloud Cuckoo Land\, Anthony Doerr. \nRegistration is required. Register online or call 203.762.6334.  Please email Michael Bellacosa with any questions. \nMark J. Schenker\, having served in various decanal roles in Yale College since 1990\, retired at the end of June. A former lecturer in the English Department\, he received his Ph.D. from Columbia University with a concentration in 19th-century and early 20th-century English Literature. \nThese lectures are made possible with the support of the Literary Series in Memory of Amy Quigley. \n

SUMMARY:Space Race: The 20th C. Competition between Two Cold War Rivals
DESCRIPTION:The space race was a 20th century competition between two Cold War rivals\, the Soviet Union and the United States. The race\, who would be first to land a man on the Moon persisted nearly fifteen years. Each country claimed multiple victories along the journey. The competition spawned pioneering efforts to launch artificial satellites\, unmanned probes to many planets and human spaceflight in Earth orbit and to the Moon. All of these multi-million-dollar events occurred with computers featuring 100\,000 times less processing power than today’s typical mobile phone. It was dangerous work for the new heroes America called astronauts. The event that ended the competition required man to travel nearly 240\,000 miles from Earth. Winning the competition was considered necessary for each country’s national security. Learn more about how America ultimately won the race and the journey it required to achieve that goal. \nJohn Cilio is a historical storyteller\, author and researcher who has brought historical stories back to life for over 15 years. A member of the Organization of American Historians and the Association for the Study of Connecticut History\, he retired from IBM corporate marketing communications. He has published seven historical books and numerous articles for national and regional periodicals. \nRegistration is required. Please register online or call 203.762.6334. SUMMARY:Author Talk: Allison Montclair - The Lady from Burma
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an author talk at Wilton Library. \nIn Allison Montclair’s The Lady from Burma\, murder once again stalks the proprietors of The Right Sort Marriage Bureau in the surprisingly dangerous landscape of post-World War II London. \nIn the immediate post-war days of London\, two unlikely partners have undertaken an even more unlikely\, if necessary\, business venture – The Right Sort Marriage Bureau. The two partners are Miss Iris Sparks\, a woman with a dangerous – and never discussed – past in British intelligence and Mrs. Gwendolyn Bainbridge\, a war widow with a young son entangled in a complicated aristocratic family. Mostly their clients are people trying to start (or restart) their lives in this much-changed world\, but their new client is something different. A happily married woman has come to them to find a new wife for her husband. Dying of cancer\, she wants the two to make sure her entomologist\, academic husband finds someone new once she passes. \nShortly thereafter\, she’s found dead in Epping Forest\, in what appears to be a suicide. But that doesn’t make sense to either Sparks or Bainbridge. At the same time\, Bainbridge is attempting to regain legal control of her life\, opposed by the conservator who has been managing her assets – perhaps not always in her best interest. When that conservator is found dead\, Bainbridge herself is one of the prime suspects. Attempting to make sense of two deaths at once\, to protect themselves and their clients\, the redoubtable owners of the Right Sort Marriage Bureau are once again on the case. \nAllison Montclair (a pseudonym for Alan Gordon) grew up devouring hand-me-down Agatha Christie paperbacks and James Bond movies. As a result of this deplorable upbringing\, Montclair became addicted to tales of crime\, intrigue\, and espionage. Montclair is the author of the award-winning Sparks & Bainbridge historical mystery series\, which begins with The Right Sort of Man. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nThe media sponsor of our author talks is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nRegistration is required. Register on the Wilton Library’s website.
