DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library for a special Author Talk with Melissa Newman on Monday\, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m.\, when she shares an extraordinary and deeply personal new look inside the private life of her parents Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward as presented in the recently published and lushly illustrated book\, Head Over Heels: Joanne Woodward & Paul Newman: A Love Affair in Words and Pictures. This luxurious coffee-table volume with 120+ photos will make the perfect holiday\, anniversary\, or Valentine’s Day gift for anyone wanting to celebrate the enduring power of love. \nJoanne Woodward and Paul Newman became not only movie stars and stage actors\, but also artistic collaborators\, political activists\, and philanthropists whose legacies are expansive and enduringly modern. They are one of America’s most indelibly iconic couples\, and while their love story wasn’t always a fairytale\, it is the stuff of Hollywood legend. \nThe book is chock full of handwritten love notes\, snapshots\, letters\, and family treasures that have never been released — and offer revelatory and intimate insights into the private lives of these towering figures in American public life. \nThe images\, taken by some of the most celebrated photographers of our time\, including Richard Avedon\, Philippe Halsman\, and Gordon Parks\, plus family snapshots capture candid and telling moments to beautifully illuminate the connection between two complex\, passionate artists who opened their hearts and minds to each other for over a half-century. \nNot only will lifelong fans of Paul and Joanne have their love affair with the couple rekindled\, but a whole new generation of fans are poised to be drawn into a love affair with Hollywood’s golden couple. This book is Melissa’s heartfelt gift to her parents—and to all of us. \n“Mesmerizing. What shines most brightly\, however\, is the couple’s romance. Melissa has created a testament not only to how much Newman and Woodward loved each other\, she also honors how much they enjoyed each other. The affection is palpable…” — Starred Booklist Review \nMelissa Newman is an artist\, teacher\, singer and writer\, based in Westport. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies and Melissa will be signing books after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nThe media sponsor of Wilton Library author talks is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nRegistration is required. SUMMARY:Poetry Discussion with Janet Krauss: The Poetry of A. R. Ammons (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library online as Janet Krauss leads a discussion of a selection of poems by A.R. Ammons. Links to the poems will be emailed in advance of the program. \nThe spirit of Nature runs through Ammons’ soul. That is the Transcendental belief. A critic said that Ammons adheres “to a fidelity to details of nature” as he writes in a “contemporary conventional style.” He sees his identity as a “part of a larger continuum.” \nThe poet was born in 1920 and died in 2001. He was born in rural North Carolina on a cotton and tobacco farm during the Great Depression. His farm life inspired his poems. He taught at Cornell from 1964-1998\, won numerous poetry awards\, and the prestigious Bollingen Prize for American Poetry. \nWe will trace the Transcendental influence of Emerson and Dickinson in his poems. \nJanet Krauss\, who has two books of poetry published\, Borrowed Scenery and Through the Trees of Autumn\, has recently retired from teaching English at Fairfield University. \nAdvance registration is required. Register on the Wilton Library website in order to receive the Zoom session invitation link and readings packet.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: The Laurent Clerc Papers of Wilton
DESCRIPTION:Please drop in at Wilton Library between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to view the Wilton Laurent Clerc Papers exhibit which was featured recently at the Wilton Historical Society (WHS). You’ll also be able to meet and interact with Wilton High School ASL (American Sign Language) students and learn about the Laurent Clerc Stamp Project. American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation will be available throughout the exhibit and program (6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.) \nFrom the WHS exhibit: Laurent Clerc was a French immigrant and deaf man born in the late 18th century\, a time when opportunities for education for the deaf were limited. He overcame those obstacles and ultimately co-founded the American School for the Deaf in Hartford\, Connecticut in 1817\, which opened new possibilities for the deaf community. This remains the oldest active school for deaf students in the United States. Francis Clerc Ogden carried on this tradition of selflessness a century later\, becoming one of the town’s most well-known residents thanks to his service efforts and involvement in countless community organizations. In 1938\, he became one of the first members of the Wilton Historical Society\, created in order to preserve the town’s past and share its history with the public. Laurent Clerc and his great-grandson Francis Clerc Ogden share more than just a name. Though Francis was born 19 years after Laurent’s death in 1869\, their respective lifes’ work demonstrates a family tradition of service passed down between generations. \nRegistration not required for this exhibit. For more information\, please email Andrea Sato.

SUMMARY:A Gathering of Celtic at the Holidays
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library for a holiday concert as Jeff Snow returns to the Brubeck Room for “A Gathering of Celtic at the Holidays.” This program is a mix of The Softer Side of Celtic along with familiar and perhaps not so familiar holiday songs and tunes. Many of you have heard Snow play Celtic music on the Autoharp… and the music of the holidays on the ‘harp is magical. \nGrowing up in a home where the older Scottish folk songs were the everyday sounds\, Snow developed a love for Celtic music. Snow’s music has been described as “quiet and relaxing Celtic.” Much of it is but every once in a while he breaks out and the foot stomping begins. Sharing stories\, songs and tunes enriched by the histories of Scotland\, Ireland and England\, his performances educate as well as entertain. You will see clapping\, singing\, laughing\, lots of smiles and perhaps a few tears. Suitable for all ages. \nRegistration is recommended. Register on the Wilton Library website or call 203.762.6334. For more information\, email Andrea Sato.
