SUMMARY:Healthy Connections: An Inside Scoop on Adolescents and Addiction
DESCRIPTION:New experiences and relationships are essential for helping our tweens\, teens and young adults develop appropriately and reach their full potential. As parents\, we may be concerned that our kids are changing too quickly – or that their panoply of experiences will be harmful\, especially when they involve alcohol and drugs. \nIn this presentation and conversation\, Anthony Nave\, LCSW\, will explain: how our adolescents’ social\, emotional and brain development can increase their risk for substance abuse/use disorders; what signs of struggle to look out for; how to start a conversation about drugs and alcohol; and what resources are available\, if further help is needed. Nave will also discuss misconceptions surrounding addiction and the contemporary “medical model” of addiction. \nNave\, a licensed clinical social worker with master’s degrees in Educational Psychology and Clinical Social Work\, serves as Senior Manager\, Outpatient Services\, at Mountainside Treatment Center. He is advanced certified in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)\, is currently an EMDR Consultant-in-Training\, and is experienced in medication-assisted treatment\, co-occurring disorders\, and adolescent programming. Prior to joining Mountainside\, he taught in an alternative therapeutic school\, where he helped youth with mental health and cognitive disorders. At Mountainside\, Nave designs curricula for clinical programming and incorporates neurobiology and a trauma-responsive framework into one-on-one counseling\, group therapy\, family sessions\, and supervision. At home\, he enjoys pretending to be superheroes with his sons and rooting for the Red Sox and Patriots. \nRegister online.

SUMMARY:Booked for Lunch: Yale Needs Women: How the First Group of Girls Rewrote the Rules of an Ivy League Giant
DESCRIPTION:Join the next “Booked for Lunch” book talk on Zoom! “Yale Needs Women: How the First Group of Girls Rewrote the Rules of an Ivy League Giant” with author Anne Gardiner Perkins. \nThe news was so shocking that the New York Times ran it on the front page. \nYale\, which had banned women undergraduates for the previous 268 years\, was finally going co-ed. A student editorial praised Yale’s decision as a “personal triumph” for Yale President Kingman Brewster. And yet\, had Brewster had his way\, Yale would never have admitted women at all. \n“Yale Needs Women: How the First Group of Girls Rewrote the Rules of an Ivy League Giant” will be the topic of a book talk by author Anne Gardiner Perkins on Thursday\, January 28 from 12:30 – 1:30. Part of the “Booked for Lunch” series on Zoom\, the program will feature Ms. Perkins and some of the students she interviewed for the book. The title recently won the 2020 Connecticut Book Award for Nonfiction. \n“‘Yale Needs Women’ tells for the first time the true story of the young women students who broke the gender barrier at Yale in September 1969. They came from all over the country: Chicago\, Atlanta\, Los Angeles\, Baltimore\, Boston\, the Bronx. Few were prepared for what they found when they arrived. Based on five years of archival research and eighty oral histories\, “Yale Needs Women” follows the story of five women students in particular—two black and three white—through the tumultuous early years of coeducation at Yale. Anne Gardiner Perkins’s unflinching account of a group of young women striving for change is an inspiring story of strength\, resilience\, and courage that continues to resonate today. \n“‘Yale Needs Women’ is a riveting and uplifting account of the experiences of Yale’s early women coeds—first admitted in 1969. It reveals the multiple barriers faced by these pioneers\, as it chronicles their brave efforts to overcome them. Thanks to these champions of women’s rights\, with similar efforts across the country\, opportunities for women have improved. The fight is not over. This inspiring book is a “must-read” for everyone.” — Janet L. Yellen\, Former Federal Reserve Chair; Brookings Institution Distinguished Fellow. \n“It was one thing to let women in the door; it was quite another to make them feel welcome\, integrated and equally represented in Yale’s deeply entrenched male culture … In absorbing detail\, Perkins describes the organizing efforts of those early years\, from a protest by freshman women at an alumni lunch to the creation of advocacy groups like Women and Men for a Better Yale.” — New York Times Book Review \nAbout the Author: \nAnne Gardiner Perkins is an award-winning historian and expert in higher education. She grew up in Baltimore and graduated from Yale University\, where she won the Porter Prize in history and was elected the first woman editor-in-chief of the Yale Daily News. Anne is a Rhodes Scholar who received her PhD in higher education from the University of Massachusetts Boston. She earned her master’s degree from Harvard\, where she won the Littauer Award for academic excellence and served as a teaching fellow in education policy. Anne has spent her life in education\, from urban high school teacher to elected school committee member\, and has presented papers on higher education at leading conferences. \nSuggested contribution $10.00 \nRegistration essential. Register by email. After you register\, you will receive a confirmation\, Zoom session ID Code\, and instructions about how to submit questions.

SUMMARY:Wilton Winter Fest–Shopping Promotions and Events
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Chamber of Commerce will be presenting a promotional event that will spotlight the town’s local businesses. Local establishments will be decorating their storefronts with a “Winter Fest” or “Wilton Warriors” theme of blue and white from Feb. 1-13. During this time\, whenever a shopper purchases a gift card from participating retailers or restaurants\, the Chamber of Commerce is offering a Chamber of Commerce gift certificate worth 20% of the value of the gift certificate purchased! \nHere are the guidelines: \n\nGift certificates from participating businesses must be purchased between Feb. 1-13\, 2021.\nProof of purchase with date must be submitted via email\nWilton Chamber of Commerce bonus gift certificates will be mailed to purchasers\nBonus gift certificates will be valid between Feb. 14-March 31\, 2021.\n\nThe Chamber hopes this bonus gift certificate incentive will create more revenue for local Wilton businesses and encourage shopping and dining during the winter months. Please support the event and town businesses early as the total program match will be capped at $1\,000. \nOn Saturday\, Feb.13\, ice sculptures will be dotted around the Gazebo and a socially distant meet-and-greet with everyone’s favorite snowman\, Olaf\, as has been done in the past to close out the Winter Fest theme. Also on that day\, retailers will be participating in a town-wide storefront sidewalk sale for the best steals and deals of the season! It is a great way to find the perfect gift for your Valentine and help support a local business!
