SUMMARY:browngrotta arts Spring 2022 Art in the Barn Exhibition: “Crowdsourcing the Collective” — Reserve your visit for May 7th Opening Reception [SPONSORED]
DESCRIPTION:browngrotta arts presents its Spring 2022 Art in the Barn exhibition\, Crowdsourcing the Collective: survey of textile and mixed media art this May. Crowdsourcing will be documented in a full-color catalog (our 51st). Join us on Saturday\, May 7 for the Opening and Artists Reception or during the rest of the week\, May 8-15. \nThe 42 artists from 12 countries included in Crowdsourcing the Collective: a survey of textile and mixed media art illustrate the vitality of art textiles\, ceramics and mixed media. The new prominence of these art forms finds them the subject of exhibitions in major museums\, intermixed with paintings and traditional sculpture in ways unthinkable a decade ago. Many of the artists in Crowdsourcing began working in the ‘80s and ’90s\, when craft and fiber art were not well recognized; some have been working since fiber art’s first heyday in the ‘60s and ’70s. \nThe exhibition reflects an astonishing range of materials and techniques\, tapestries of silk and agave\, sculptures of seaweed\, seagrass and willow\, wall works made of sandpaper\, hemp and horsehair\, and ceramics of Shigaraki clay will all be included. The scope of these artists’ preoccupations is on view here\, too — from environmental concerns\, to questions of the cosmos and identity\, to explorations of material and process. It includes new work\, works from earlier periods\, and work from artists we have invited specifically for this exhibition. In all\, 42 artists from 12 different countries are represented. \nDetails\n\nSaturday\, May 7: 11 a.m . to 6 p.m. [Opening & Artist Reception]\nSunday\, May 8: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.\nMonday\, May 9 – Saturday\, May 14: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.\nSunday\, May 15: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. [Final Day]\n\nLocation: 276 Ridgefield Rd.\, Wilton \nThere is no cost to attend and visit the exhibition. \n

SUMMARY:"Evita" at The Wilton Playshop
DESCRIPTION:Evita\, one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time\, will be staged at the Wilton Playshop from April 22-May 7\, 2022. With direction and musical staging by Karen Morello\, the show will feature the musical direction of Zachary Kampler and the choreography of Kelly Nayden. \nSet in Argentina between 1934-1952\, Evita charts the young and ambitious Eva Peron’s meteoric rise to sainthood. The Tony Award-winning musical follows Eva Duarte on her journey from poor\, illegitimate child to ambitious actress and ultimately the most powerful woman in Latin America before her death at age 33. Told through a compelling score that fuses haunting chorales with exuberant Latin\, pop and jazz influences\, Evita creates an arresting theatrical portrait as complex as the woman herself. Well-known numbers from Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical masterpiece include “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina\,” “Oh What a Circus\,” “Buenos Aires” and “Another Suitcase in Another Hall.”

SUMMARY:Wilton Reads — Gil Harel Reprise: Charles Ives and the American Music Identity (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library for an encore broadcast of Dr. Gil Harel‘s presentation on Danbury-born composer Charles Ives. He will discuss Ives as a founder of a distinctly American music idiom. We will follow his presentation with a live Q&A with Harel. \nCharles Ives may very well be considered one of the most important American composers of the modern period. As an artist\, he had two distinct advantages in his career: an unconventional education with something of a maverick pedagogue (his father\, George Ives); and a vocation that provided him with security and\, later on\, considerable wealth. This latter point is often emphasized by historians who cite it as a factor that allowed the composer to write abstract and complex works without having to worry about concert ticket sales. During the latter part of his life\, Ives’ genius began to bring him recognition. Now\, he is regarded as a seminal American composer whose pioneering work with polytonality\, polyrhythm\, tone clusters\, aleatory elements and more has cemented his place in the canon. \nHarel is a musicologist and music theorist whose interests include styles ranging from the western classical repertoire to jazz. Currently\, he teaches music history and theory at Naugatuck Valley Community College. Online registration is required in order to receive the Zoom invitation link. To register\, visit the Wilton Library website.

SUMMARY:Wilton Reads – Author Talk: Wilton\, Connecticut by Bob Russell (In-Person & Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:In Wilton\, Connecticut: Three Centuries of People\, Places\, and Progress\, historian Bob Russell takes readers on a remarkable journey of the town. \nWilton began 300 years ago as part of Norwalk and became a separate town in 1802. Wilton residents enjoyed their close-knit self-sufficient community until the coming of the railroad in 1852 connected them to the rest of the country and changed their lives. City folks soon discovered Wilton as a quiet and healthful summer home alternative. The demand for houses after World War II caused farms to rapidly disappear\, replaced by homes\, schools\, and commercial development. \nAs the story develops\, you will meet the early pioneers\, the Revolutionary patriots\, the Gold Rush prospectors\, and other fascinating people who have helped to build the Wilton of today. \nRussell was educated as an engineer and has ended up as a historian. Along with his 35-year IBM career\, he served on many Wilton town and organization boards including the Wilton Library Association\, the Wilton Historical Society\, Wilton Land Conservation Trust\, the town’s Board of Finance\, the Wilton Fire Commission and later as First Selectman for six years. A resident in the Wilton area for 53 years\, Bob wants to preserve our history for future generations. He has been married to Carol for 60 years and they have raised two children in Wilton. \nRussell will be recognized with a Grodin Family Fine Writers Award during the talk. \nBooks will be available for sale and Russell will be signing books after the presentation. \nRegistration is required. Organizers plan for this program to be in-person at the library and also streamed live on Zoom. The registration form allows attendees to choose their attendance preference. \nThe media sponsor of author talks is GOOD Morning Wilton.
