SUMMARY:1959 in Jazz History with Gil Harel: Davis' Kind of Blue
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for the first program of a new four-part series with Dr. Gil Harel on the seminal jazz albums of 1959. The series will run as follows: \n3/20/24: Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue\n4/10/24: Dave Brubeck’s Time Out\n5/22/24: John Coltrane’s Giant Steps\n6/19/24: Jazz Post-1959 Diverging Paths \nThe year 1959 might be described as no less than a seismic year for jazz. Indeed\, this relatively short stretch bore witness to the release of many iconic\, innovative\, and forward-looking albums. Celebrated figures including Miles Davis\, John Coltrane\, Dave Brubeck\, Charles Mingus\, Ornette Coleman\, and more wrote and performed at this time. During this introductory lecture\, Dr. Harel considers one of the albums recorded in the spring of that year: Kind of Blue. Featuring songs such as “So What” and “Blue in Green\,” this record is remembered both for the novel writing as well as the individual contributions of musicians including Davis\, Coltrane\, Bill Evans\, and others. \nHarel (PhD\, Brandeis University) is a musicologist and music theorist whose interests include styles ranging from the western classical repertoire to jazz. Previously\, he served on the faculty at CUNY Baruch College\, where he was awarded the prestigious “Presidential Excellence Award for Distinguished Teaching”. Currently\, he is Full Professor of Music at CT State Naugatuck Valley\, where he has been presented with the AFT “Merit Award for Exemplary Service to the College” for 6 consecutive years. In 2020\, he was honored with the coveted Connecticut Board of Regents (BOR) Teaching Award. At NVCC\, Dr. Harel conducts the college chorale\, a cappella ensemble\, teaches music history and theory\, and serves as musical director of theater productions. \nRegistration is strongly recommended online or call 203.762.6334.

SUMMARY:Spring Semester with Mark Schenker: Tennyson's "Idylls of the King" (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library online via Zoom as Mark Schenker takes us through Tennyson’s Idylls of the King\, a Victorian take on the medieval Arthurian legends. \nIn the early 19th century\, the rise of Romanticism in Europe generally\, and in England in particular\, led to a renewed interest in medievalism. Consequences of this resurgence persisted into the Victorian Period and included the revival of the Gothic in architecture and of Roman Catholic and Anglo-Catholic thinking in philosophy and religion. \nA nationalistic figure from the Middle Age\, King Arthur—who may or may not have been historical—was the subject of treatments by 19th-century writers as diverse as Alfred\, Lord Tennyson and Mark Twain. Earlier\, the 12th-century Geoffrey of Monmouth\, writing in Latin\, placed Arthur in the tradition of British kings\, relying more on his own imagination than on historical sources. In the same century the French poet Chrétien de Troyes introduced the important themes of the Holy Grail\, the court of Camelot\, and the adulterous affair between Sir Lancelot and Queen Guinevere. \nIn the 15th century\, Thomas Malory wrote Le Morte D’Arthur in Middle English prose while drawing mainly on French sources. Its publication in 1485 made it one of the first books ever to be printed in England. It was this work that Tennyson used when he published his Idylls of the King\, 12 tales of Arthur and his knights\, written in verse and published from 1859 to 1885. \nSchenker will present a program in six sessions with reference also to the source tales found in Malory’s text. Participants will read all 12 of Tennyson’s narrative poems and will be directed to read\, if they care to\, the corresponding stories in Malory\, available online. Mark will emphasize connections and contrasts\, and will place Tennyson’s work in its Victorian context. \nThere is no charge for the program. These lectures are made possible with the support of the Literary Series in Memory of Amy Quigley. Advance registration is required. Register online. \nMark J. Schenker\, having served in various decanal roles in Yale College since 1990\, retired last year. A former lecturer in the English Department\, he received his Ph.D. from Columbia University with a concentration in 19th-century and early 20th-century English Literature. He had taught previously at Columbia\, New York University\, and Trinity College (Hartford\, CT). Outside of academia\, Mark has for over 35 years lectured on literature and film\, and has led book discussion series in more than 100 venues in Connecticut\, including public libraries\, museums\, and cultural centers.

SUMMARY:This is What Democracy Looked Like: A Visual History of the Printed Ballot with Alicia Cheng
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wilton League of Women Voters\, Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society for a community program featuring Alicia Cheng\, who will speak about her recent book: This is What Democracy Looked Like: A Visual History of the Printed Ballot. \nCheng’s book\, the first illustrated history of printed ballot design\, illuminates the noble but often flawed process at the heart of our democracy. An exploration and celebration of US ballots from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries\, this visual history reveals unregulated\, outlandish\, and\, at times\, absurd designs that reflect the explosive growth and changing face of the voting public. The ballots particularly offer insight into a pivotal time in American history — a period of tectonic shifts in the electoral system — fraught with electoral fraud\, disenfranchisement\, scams\, and skullduggery. Parties also printed their own tickets and voters risked their lives going to the polls. \nCheng currently serves as the Head of Design at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She additionally serves as an external critic for the MFA program at the Rhode Island School of Design and has taught at Yale University\, Maryland Institute College of Art\, Barnard College\, and the Cooper Union School of Art. She will present and discuss some of the remarkably varied and colorful formats of electoral ballots in American democracy’s early days featured in her recent book. \nStephanie Thomas\, the Secretary of State of Connecticut\, plans to join the event as a special guest. \nElm Street Books will be selling copies and Cheng will sign books after the talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nRegistration is requested online.

On October 27\, 2018\, a gunman killed eleven Jews who were worshiping at the Tree of Life Synagogue — the most deadly anti-Semitic attack in American history. \nMany neighborhoods would be understandably subsumed by despair and recrimination after such an event\, but not this one. Oppenheimer poignantly shifts the focus away from the criminal and his crime\, and instead presents the historic\, spirited community at the center of this heartbreak. He even speaks with residents and nonresidents\, Jews and gentiles\, survivors and witnesses\, teenagers and seniors\, activists and historians. \nTogether\, these stories provide a kaleidoscopic and nuanced account of collective grief\, love\, support\, and revival. Yet\, he additionally details the difficult dialogue and messy confrontations that Squirrel Hill had to face in the process of healing. These necessary steps are a part of true growth and understanding in any community. He has reverently captured the vibrancy and caring that still characterize Squirrel Hill\, and it is this phenomenal resilience that can provide inspiration to any place burdened with discrimination and hate. \nOppenheimer has covered American religion for 25 years. He holds a PhD in religious studies from Yale\, and has taught at Stanford\, Wesleyan\, Wellesley\, NYU\, Boston College\, and Yale. He also was the founding director of the Yale Journalism Initiative. On top of that\, he wrote the “Beliefs” column for The New York Times from 2010 – 2016\, and has written for The New Yorker\, The Nation\, GQ\, Slate\, and many more. Oppenheimer notably created Unorthodox\, the world’s most popular podcast about Jewish life and culture\, and more recently hosted the multi-part podcast\, Gatecrashers. This discussed the history of Jews and antisemitism at Ivy League schools. He is the author of five books\, including Squirrel Hill. Since 2023\, he has been Director of Open Learning at American Jewish University and lives in Connecticut with his wife\, four daughters\, one son\, and two dogs. \nElm Street Books will sell copies of the book\, which the author will sign after the program. \nPresented in partnership with Wilton Library\, the Wilton Coalition to Combat Antisemitism\, and the Riverbrook Regional YMCA\, serving Wilton\, Norwalk\, and Redding\, the media sponsor for this event is GOOD Morning Wilton. \nRegistration is required online or call 203.761.6334.

SUMMARY:Inside Emily Dickinson: Her Poetry & Her Life — A Live Theatrical Performance by Ginger Grace
DESCRIPTION:April is National Poetry Month\, 30 days of celebrating the joy\, expressiveness\, and pure delight of poetry. What better way to celebrate poetry than by honoring the legendary American poet Emily Dickinson? Join Wilton Library for this interactive production of “Inside Emily Dickinson: Her Poetry & Her Life\,” created and performed by Ginger Grace. \nDickinson takes viewers on a delirious romp through her life and times. Wit\, wonder and wisdom are the order of the day. The audience finds itself in the midst of life changing events and relationships as Dickinson defies the conventions of her time – and creates poetry for the ages. On occasion\, she steps out of the play\, calls out to the audience for words and ideas\, weaves those into the fabric of the piece – and now\, the possibilities with words are limitless! \n“Animated – informal and personal – you made me love Emily Dickinson.” \nGrace’s acting credits include the national tour of The Presidents (opposite Rich Little). Off-Broadway: The Glass Menagerie; Miss Julie; Faust; and Electra. Regional: Eleanor Roosevelt: Her Secret Journey; The First Ladies Coalition (written and performed by Grace); The Belle of Amherst; and Inside Emily Dickinson: Her Poetry & Her Life (written and performed by Grace); Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf; and Doubt. Film: Wedding March by Deborah Savadge; Chris Shomojima’s 6-Minute Mom; and The Trouble with Tuesdays by Martine Sainvil. \nGrace has worked with the CASA Program\, helping inner-city school children create their own shows\, and she thrives on bringing out the voices of children in the theater. \nRegistration is required. Register online or call 203.762.6334.
