DESCRIPTION:“Don’t judge a book by its cover”—but in this case\, we mean human beings\, not books! \nThe Human Library is an international movement that started in Denmark in 2000 and is now held in more than 70 countries. Wilton Library is the first non-academic library in Connecticut to receive permission from the Human Library Organization to host an event. \nOur human books are community members who have volunteered to share their stories in order to break down barriers based on appearance or identity (e.g.; age\, race\, sexual orientation\, religion\, ability\, lifestyle choices\, etc.). This is the time for open conversations between two people in a non-judgmental environment. Spend a few minutes with each “book.” It is an opportunity for those who have faced prejudice to tell their story and show people who they really are; and it is a chance for others to change their preconceived notions based on a person’s appearance or identity. \nThere is no advance registration or fee; guests are invited to come and enjoy the experience.

DESCRIPTION:Wilton Go Green’s 2nd Annual Zero Waste Faire is a special event designed to educate\, inspire\, entertain\, and engage the town of Wilton and neighboring communities about zero waste living. By sharing information and ideas from speakers\, exhibitors\, media\, and discussions of current issues\, the Faire will help advance Zero Waste practices that benefit everyone. \nThe event will again feature a broad range of interactive exhibits to help Wilton and Fairfield County become more conscious about and involved in practicing Zero Waste living.There will be exhibits from museums\, aquariums\, and environmental organizations with many fun\, educational activities. This year’s Faire will feature more exhibitors demonstrating and selling products\, such as reusable drinking straws\, compost bins and reusable beeswax food wrap. \nNew features–like the Fix-It-Café\, a Zero Waste Store\, the Eco Fashion Show\, a Zero Waste Tiny Home and The Problem with Single Use Plastics exhibit–will add more value to the Faire. For example\, the “Fix-It-Café” will enable attendees to bring clothing in need of repair and small appliances to get fixed on-site or taken offsite for fixing; the exhibit\, “The Problem with Single Use Plastics\,” will educate the community about the negative effects of plastic on oceans\, animals and the environment\, and will offer alternatives for plastic in and outside the home. \nExhibit categories will range from home composting\, backyard farming\, zero-waste cooking\, recycling\, and food storage. There will also be a Zero Waste Feast\, games for children\, entertainment and guest speakers. \n\n\n\nAttendees are also encouraged to Recycle right at the Faire\, by bringing old electronics\, furniture and hard drives. \nNo single use plastic water bottles will be sold\, so attendees should bring their own reusable water bottle/coffee tumbler or consider buying one at the Faire. \nThe event is hosted by Wilton Go Green and organized by dynamic volunteers. This year a generous grant from the Enterprise Holdings Foundation will help pay for Faire operations. The Faire is supported by a Green Partner–Sustainne; a Silver Sponsor–The Junkluggers; and Media Partners–GOOD Morning Wilton and 95.9 The Fox. \nThere is no charge to attend\, although donations are welcome with a suggested amount of $5 per person or $10 per family. All funds raised will go to Wilton Go Green’s programs\, such as the Wilton No Idling initiative and the Zero Waste Schools program.

SUMMARY:Sharp Hill Cemetery Walk for Kids
DESCRIPTION:Sharp Hill Cemetery dates back to c. 1738 when it replaced the long lost original burying ground on Wolfpit Rd.\, and was Wilton’s principal burying place until the mid-1800s. The earliest legible stone is that of Mable Elmer with a date of January 1744. Twenty-three Revolutionary War and six French and Indian War veterans are buried here. \nParticipants will meet at the Wilton Historical Society at 11 a.m.\, then the group will walk together with museum educator Laurie Walker to the cemetery and talk about the history of the cemetery and the lives of some of the people buried there. After returning to the Historical Society\, the kids will help make their own snack\, ginger cookies decorated like headstones. \nSuggested for ages 6-12. The cost for Wilton Historical Society members is $10/child\, with a maximum of $25/family; non-members are $15/child\, maximum $35/family. Please register via email or call 203.762.7257. \nDid You Know?\nAccording to Wilton historian Bob Russell\, “The Sharp Hill Cemetery\, owned by the Wilton Congregational Church\, is the oldest surviving cemetery in Wilton\, dating from 1738. That year\, John Marvin gave 64 square rods (4/10 of an acre) to the “Presbyterian or Congregational Society of Wilton” as the site of a meeting house for the worship of God\, as the Society had outgrown the small building in which they had started 12 years earlier. The cemetery was to surround the new meeting house. Although the church building which was built there only lasted until 1790\, the cemetery was used actively until the mid-1800s and then was gradually replaced by Hillside Cemetery on Ridgefield Road\, which had the advantage of more space.”

DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Alicia Farrell\, Ph.D. \nWe are raising our children in complicated times where performance is valued over character. In such a competitive world\, parents\, educators and leaders are unwittingly passing on to their children pressure to be perfect. In turn\, our children are feeling inadequate\, anxious\, overwhelmed\, stressed\, scared and tired. This talk is designed to address how we arrived at this place and what we can do about it. Here are some questions that will be answered: \n\nWhat does it mean to be perfect and what are the consequences of trying?\nHow do we balance embracing our children’s imperfections with the importance of working hard and doing your best?\nWhat are the benefits of failure and why is it critically important to our children’s development?\nWhat are healthy\, age-appropriate expectations and how do we communicate them without shame and fear?\nHow do boys and girls experience and respond to the pressure to achieve differently?\nWhat is the relationship between the pressure to be perfect and the nationwide increase of anxiety disorders\, addiction\, and suicide in children and adolescence?\n\nIt is time for change. SUMMARY:Holocaust Survivor Judith Altmann\, A Community Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Judith Altmann\, a Holocaust survivor and speaker for the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center\, returns to Wilton on Tuesday\, March 19 to share her story with the community. \nBorn in Jasina\, Czechoslovakia\, which was invaded by the Nazis in 1939\, Altmann was arrested in 1944 and transported to Auschwitz concentration camp with her niece\, where they were selected for work\, rather than sent to the gas chambers and death. From there she was moved to Essen and Gelsenkirchen Labour camps\, where she remained until March 1945\, and later survived the “death march” that ended in the Bergen Belsen concentration camp. Sick with typhus\, Altmann was barely alive when she was liberated by the British Army in 1945. She was given the opportunity to go to Sweden\, where she lived until emigrating to the United States in 1948. \nAltmann\, who has extensive experience speaking in schools\, is a member of the Holocaust & Human Rights Education Speakers Bureau\, and is vice president of the Holocaust Child Survivors of Connecticut. \nThis presentation follows Altmann’s visit to Middlebrook where she spoke to all of the students during two school-wide assemblies. Her message is one of hope and forgiveness\, encouraging her listeners to think for themselves and speak out against injustice.

SUMMARY:Wilton Historical Society Felting Workshop for Kids:  Making Felted Soap
DESCRIPTION:One of the world’s oldest textiles\, felt is created from wool or other animal fibers that are densely matted together. It is ideal for protecting against cold and insulating against heat\, thus it has long been used for hats\, mittens\, blankets\, rugs\, yurts\, boots and clothing. At this Wilton Historical Society workshop\, museum educator Laurie Walker will discuss the origins of felting\, and lead the children in making felted soap. The kids will help make their own snack\, chocolate covered pretzels. \nSuggested for ages 6-12. The cost for Wilton Historical Society members is $10/child\, with a maximum of $25/family; non-member cost is $15/child\, maximum $35/family. Please register via email or call 203.762.7257. \nDid You Know? \nMaking felted hats\, Danbury was known as “Hat City” . . . and hatters suffered “Danbury Shakes” \nAccording to ConnecticutHistory.org\, a program of CT Humanities: \n“The origins of Danbury’s hat-making industry date back to the late 18th century. It was then that Zadoc Benedict\, having stumbled upon a way to make felt by adding heat\, moisture\, and pressure to animal pelts\, began using his bedpost to mold felt into hats. He then hired a journeyman and two hat-making apprentices and started producing three hats per day. Danbury proved an ideal location for hat making thanks to its abundant populations of beavers and rabbits for pelts and thickly wooded forests for firewood. . . . In the early 1800s\, Danbury produced mostly unfinished hats. Hatters softened and dyed the felt through an 18- to 20-hour boiling process\, and molded the pieces into their proper shape. They then rolled the hats up by twos into paper and placed them in a linen bag\, and from there\, into a leather sack for shipment to New York by coach. Once in New York\, craftsmen trimmed and finished the hats.”  \nThe expression “as mad as a hatter” is believed to have its origins in the deleterious effects of mercury nitrate exposure on workers in hat factories. During the mid-19th century\, the term “hatter’s shakes” became commonplace in the United States and Europe. It referred to the tremors experienced by workers whose prolonged exposure to the toxic mercury used in making headwear had devastating effects. In Connecticut\, the physical condition was termed the “Danbury Shakes.”

On one of her visits to the surface\, which are forbidden by her controlling father\, King Triton\, she falls for a human prince. Determined to be with her new love\, Ariel makes a dangerous deal with the sea witch Ursula to become human for three days. But when plans go awry for the star-crossed lovers\, the king must make the ultimate sacrifice for his daughter. \nGet your tickets ahead of time–save money and pick your own seats on the WCT website.  Tickets are $13.50 online and $14 at the door. The show runs Friday\, March 15 at 7 p.m.; Saturday\, March 16 at 4 p.m.; and Sunday\, March 17 at 2 p.m.. \nDuring the show\, Wilton Children’s Theater will be raising money for Oceana\, an organization dedicated to restoring and protecting our oceans.
