Wilton Historical’s historic 18th and 19th-century buildings are charmingly decorated and transformed into a train-lovers delight with many different model train layouts winding through tiny towns with a variety of buildings\, tunnels\, and all sorts of delightful animals showing up in unexpected places! The show enchants visitors of all ages with lots of buttons to push and knowledgeable “train engineers” on hand to “talk trains”. Visitors can also see a marvelous miniature holiday village\, twinkling with lights. \nMembers can view the show for free while non-member adults cost $10 and non-member kids cost $5. SUMMARY:Wilton Library: Author Talk with Matthew Gabriele and David M. Perry - The Bright Ages: A New History of Medieval Europe
DESCRIPTION:The word “medieval” conjures images of the “Dark Ages”—centuries of ignorance\, superstition\, stasis\, savagery\, and poor hygiene. But the myth of darkness obscures the truth; this was a remarkable period in human history. “The Bright Ages” recasts the European Middle Ages for what it was\, capturing this 1\,000-year era in all its complexity and fundamental humanity\, bringing to light both its beauty and its horrors. \n“The Bright Ages” takes us through ten centuries and crisscrosses Europe and the Mediterranean\, Asia and Africa\, revisiting familiar people and events with new light cast upon them. We look with fresh eyes on the Fall of Rome\, Charlemagne\, the Vikings\, the Crusades\, and the Black Death\, but also to the multi-religious experience of Iberia\, the rise of Byzantium\, and the genius of Hildegard and the power of queens. We begin under a blanket of golden stars constructed by an empress with Germanic\, Roman\, Spanish\, Byzantine\, and Christian bloodlines and end nearly 1\,000 years later with the poet Dante—inspired by that same twinkling celestial canopy—writing an epic saga of heaven and hell that endures as a masterpiece of literature today. \nDavid Perry is a freelance journalist covering politics\, history\, education\, and disability rights. Perry’s work appears at CNN\, The New York Times\, The Atlantic\, The Guardian\, Washington Post\, The Nation\, Los Angeles Times\, and many others. Perry was a professor of Medieval History at Dominican University from 2006-2017\, working on Venice\, the Crusades\, and the Mediterranean World. He is the Senior Undergraduate Advisor for the University of Minnesota‘s History department. \nMatthew Gabriele is a Professor of Medieval Studies and Chair of the Department of Religion and Culture at Virginia Tech. He completed an Honors BA in history at the University of Delaware and then his M.A. and Ph.D. in medieval history at the University of California\, Berkeley. He was a regular contributor to Forbes.com and his public writing has appeared in such places as the Washington Post\, Time\, The Guardian\, The Daily Beast\, Slate\, and The Roanoke Times. \nOnline registration is required. He is transformed into a caring\, kindly person when visited by four ghosts on Christmas Eve: Jacob Marley\, and the spirits of Christmas Past\, Present\, and Future. Patrick R. Spadaccino\, who both adapted the show and stars in it\, plays twenty-five different roles in the ninety-minute performance and brings each character to life! DESCRIPTION:Renowned silhouette artist Deborah O’Connor will create individual portraits cut entirely freehand from paper\, using scissors as her only tool\, at the Wilton Historical Society on Saturday\, Dec. 11 from 11 am to 2 pm. Subjects pose for silhouettes\, created in a matter of minutes\, which they can take home for the perfect holiday gift or a future cherished family heirloom. \nThis year there is an option for pre-ordering silhouettes\, which can be picked up during the Great Trains Holiday Show. Your pre-order must be placed no later than Saturday\, Dec 4. Ms. O’Connor also creates pet silhouettes\, which can be pre-ordered with a photo but are not available in a “live” sitting. \nThe first silhouette is $30\, and additional copies are $15. DESCRIPTION:Please join the Wilton Library online on Tuesday\, Dec. 14 from 10:30 am to 12 pm as Janet Krauss leads a discussion of a selection of poems by Pablo Neruda. The Chilean poet and political activist\, known best for his odes and love poems\, is still universally acclaimed. \nJanet Krauss\, who has two books of poetry published\, “Borrowed Scenery\,” Yuganta Press\, and “Through the Trees of Autumn\,” Spartina Press\, has recently retired from teaching English at Fairfield University. \nPlease see the library’s registration link for more details. DESCRIPTION:All teens (grades 6-12) are welcome to join the Wilton Library in the Brubeck Room on Tuesday\, Dec. 4 from 4 pm to 5pm to learn how to make ‘zines. \nPronounced “zeen\,” these mini-magazines were popularized in the 1990s and are easy to make. Come learn how to measure different sizes and spend time writing\, collaging\, and decorating your own. \nPlease register online as our space is limited. You are welcome to bring materials such as magazine clippings\, word cut-outs\, and paper for collaging\, but everything will be provided.
