SUMMARY:Going to Extremes: Travel Adventures (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library for this Zoom presentation by nationally-known adventure travel journalist Peter Mandel. \nThe author of ten books\, Mandel hunts for his stories and photos in the world’s far corners\, including Antarctica\, India\, Egypt\, Patagonia\, the fjords of Norway\, the mountain pathways of Japan\, and the deserts of Africa. During this session\, Peter will show slides of his most extreme travel experiences —surviving a coup in Ecuador\, visiting a ‘city’ of penguins at the South Pole\, fishing for piranha on Brazil’s Rio Negro\, floating in the Goodyear Blimp\, sailing on an Arctic icebreaker\, camping in the African bush\, and kayaking to the Statue of Liberty — and talk about how adventure travel turns to prose in today’s media. \nMandel’s books have been published by Simon & Schuster\, Macmillan\, HarperCollins and Henry Holt. One of his Boston Globe articles won the 2005 Lowell Thomas gold medal from the Society of American Travel Writers for adventure travel article of the year. Other articles\, for The Washington Post and the Baltimore Sun\, won Lowell Thomas Awards in 2003\, 2006 and 2007. \nRegistration is required. Please register at the Wilton Library website or call 203-762-6334. For more information\, contact asato@wiltonlibrary.org.

SUMMARY:National Gun Violence Awareness Day and Wear Orange Weekend Observance
DESCRIPTION:June 3rd is National Gun Violence Awareness Day and June 3-5 is Wear Orange Weekend.  The Town of Wilton will observe beginning with a ceremony at the front of Town Hall on Thursday\, June 2 at 11 a.m. Look for further details in an upcoming e-alert and the media. Sadly in 2019\, when we last observed National Gun Violence Awareness Day\, it was six days after shootings at a municipal building in Virginia Beach that resulted in the death of eleven city employees and a member of the public. Again\, we will gather within days of more horrific shootings.

SUMMARY:Four Masterpieces of Modern American Fiction Between the World Wars (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Mark Schenker of Yale College returns in a continuation of his 2021-2022 lectures on classic novels. This series will be offered via Zoom but with a bonus: the final session will be in-person in the Brubeck Room (as well as on Zoom) with a short reception after the lecture to chat with Mark and each other at the series conclusion. \nMark will lecture on four celebrated novels\, books that illustrate how the American novel expanded to include the experience of urban immigrants and rural African-Americans; the devastating effects of the Great Depression and its testing of the promise of the American Dream; and in general a more inclusive consideration of just how varied are the people in “We\, the People.” \nAttendees are not expected to read or reread all or even any of the novels\, but a familiarity with them will of course make the lectures more meaningful. Here are the novels for each week: June 2 – Henry Roth – Call It Sleep; June 9 – Zora Neale Hurston – Their Eyes Were Watching God; June 23 – John Steinbeck – The Grapes of Wrath; June 30 – Carson McCullers – The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. \nThis lecture series is made possible with the support of the Literary Series in Memory of Amy Quigley. Advance registration required. You will automatically be registered for all four sessions in the series. To register\, visit the Wilton Library website.

SUMMARY:Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics
DESCRIPTION:The mission of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics is to raise funds for and awareness of the Special Olympics movement worldwide. Law enforcement officers from every state and more than 30 countries carry the Flame of Hope in honor of the Special Olympics athletes in their area and around the world. \nThe Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics is an international series of torch relays\, run by law enforcement officers\, that lead up to each state or nation’s Special Olympics Summer Games. Law enforcement officers raise money in conjunction with their respective Torch Runs for their local Special Olympics programs. What was originally designed to be an independent law enforcement effort\, has evolved into a joint partnership between Special Olympics and Law Enforcement. \nThe Law Enforcement Torch Run is Special Olympics’ largest grassroots fund-raiser and public awareness vehicle. In 2002\, this international event raised more than $20.5 million for Special Olympics programs. Nearly 80\,000 law enforcement officers carried the Flame of Hope around 50 states\, 32 nations and 10 Canadian provinces and territories raising awareness and funds for Special Olympics. \nThe Law Enforcement Torch Run began in 1981 when Wichita\, Kansas Police Chief Richard LaMunyon saw an urgent need to raise funds for and increase awareness of Special Olympics. He conceived the idea of a Torch Run as a way to involve local law enforcement personnel in the community with Special Olympics. After three years of successful Torch Runs in Kansas\, LaMunyon presented the program to the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP). With IACP’s enthusiastic support and leadership\, as well as the involvement of all facets of the law enforcement community\, Sheriff’s associations\, police unions\, state\, county\, municipal\, military\, and federal law enforcement\, and corrections officers\, the Torch Run expanded into seven states by 1985; 43 states by 1986\, and 50 states and 25 nations in 1997.
