SUMMARY:Domestic Violence Awareness Month Proclamation
DESCRIPTION:First Selectwoman Lynne Vanderslice will read a Proclamation for Domestic Violence Awareness Month on Tuesday\, Oct. 8\, at 9 a.m. at Wilton High School. \nMembers of the Wilton Domestic Violence Task Force\, Wilton Police\, Teen PeaceWorks and other officials will be there. The event has usually been held at Town Hall\, but this year has been moved to a new location at Wilton High School in front of the flagpole (corner of Catalpa Rd. and Kristine Lily Way) in order to include some of the student population. \nTraditionally the members of the Teen PeaceWorks group have tied purple ribbons around trees in Wilton Center–the same number as the number of domestic violence calls received by the Wilton Police for that year. Instead\, the task force will use purple pinwheels to represent the number of calls this year.

SUMMARY:Wilton HazWaste Collection Event
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Conservation Commission will be sponsoring Wilton’s Annual HazWaste Collection Day on Saturday\, Oct. 12\, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Miller-Driscoll School Parking Lot (217 Wolfpit Rd.). This event enables Wilton residents to safely dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste by bringing it to the collection where a certified hazardous waste contractor will provide appropriate and responsible disposal of the unwanted products. \nNearly all households contain some household hazardous waste (HHW). HHW is generally defined as a household waste that is corrosive (such as acids and alkalis)\, flammable\, reactive or toxic (poisonous). Common HHW includes paint thinners\, pool chemicals\, pesticides\, mercury thermometers\, and gasoline. When these products are no longer wanted or needed\, they become hazardous waste and must be disposed of responsibly and safely so that they do not lead to personal injury and do not enter the food chain or contaminate drinking water supplies. Household hazardous waste collection programs provide an opportunity to manage these wastes in an environmentally safe manner. \nCommon household products that should not end up in our household trash and will be accepted at the event include: \nAerosol Cans (not empty)\nAntifreeze\nArts/Craft Supplies\nAsphalt/Roof Sealer\nBathroom Cleaners\nBrake Fluid\nChemical Fertilizers\nChemistry Kits\nDegreasers\nDisinfectants\nDrain Cleaners\nFire Extinguishers\nFlea Powders/Sprays\nFloor Care Products\nFungicides\nFurniture/Car Polish\nGasoline\nHair Dyes & Sprays\nHerbicides\nHousehold Batteries\nInsecticides/Pesticides\nKerosene\nMetal Polish\nMoth Balls\nNail Polish/Remover\nOven Cleaners\nPaint Strippers/Thinners\nPhoto Chemicals\nPool Chemicals\nRodent Poison\nSolvents\nTile/Toilet Cleaners\nTransmission Fluid \nThis event is for the collection of household hazardous waste only. SUMMARY:Music of the Japanese Aesthetic: Imaginable Beauty
DESCRIPTION:Wilton’s own Music on the Hill invites you to its first concert of the fall season\, performed by the women of the 16-member professional ensemble\, the Chamber Chorus\, and by the handbell ensemble\, Jubilate Ringers. David H. Connell and Ellen Dickinson will direct. \nThe two choral works feature settings of Japanese poetry:  The Winter Cantata of Vincent Persichetti is a sequence of haiku written by the great masters of that poetic form; and the suite Tsukimi (Moon-Viewing) by Peter Gilbert is a setting of eight texts\, taken from 1000-yr old texts\, in which each of the eight singers has a solo role. In addition\, the Jubilate Ringers will premiere “Moonlight on the Lake\,” a suite of Japanese songs arranged for handbells by Dickinson. \nThe acoustics and open natural space in the sanctuary of the Unitarian Church in Westport with its walls of windows and soaring ceiling will add to the experience. A $20 donation is suggested but not required. Refreshments will be offered following the performance. Please join us! For more info about Music on the Hill and its busy fall season\, see the Music on the Hill website.
