DESCRIPTION:The Board of Selectmen\, along with the Town Meeting\, is the legislative body of the Town. The Board consists of five members\, all of whom serve four year terms. The Board of Selectmen operates under the principles of civility\, respect\, and understanding. In February 2017\, the Board of Selectmen adopted a proclamation to state its principles and encourage all residents to share those principles. \nThe Selectmen are responsible for town government activities including carrying out town policies\, town ordinances\, and administrative and budgetary management of the Town. The Selectmen are not responsible for Wilton Public Schools. Currently serving on the Board of Selectmen are: Toni Boucher (First Selectwoman)\, Joshua S. Cole (Second Selectman)\, Kimberley Healy\, Basam Nabulsi\, and Ross H. DESCRIPTION:Wilton Reads 2024 culminates with Wilton Library‘s author talk event featuring Cristina Henriquez\, acclaimed author of The Great Divide. \nThe Great Divide is a fascinating historical novel about the Panama Canal construction\, one of the greatest historical engineering feats. It importantly explores laborers\, locals\, activists\, doctors\, scientists\, and others interwoven stories. They are clearly the diverse unsung heroes who lived and worked alongside the massive project. They also witnessed firsthand the human cost of progress as they fought to survive amid turmoil and disease. \nThe Great Divide is a TODAY Show Read with Jenna Book Club Pick\, an Indie Next Pick\, a LibraryReads Pick. It has been named a Best of the Month Pick by Amazon\, TIME\, The Washington Post\, and the Los Angeles Times as well. \nHenriquez wrote four books\, including The Book of Unknown Americans\, a New York Times Notable Book of 2014 and one of Amazon’s Top 10 Best Books of the Year. It was longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction and was a finalist for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. \nHenriquez is also the author of The World in Half and Come Together\, Fall Apart: A Novella and Stories. She additionally earned the Alfredo Cisneros Del Moral Foundation Award\, a grant by Sandra Cisneros honoring her father. Obtaining her undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and graduating from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop\, Henriquez now lives in Illinois. \nWiltonian Joanna Ecke will interview Henriquez. Ecke taught public high school English for many years and leads several literary discussion groups at Wilton Library. \nHenriquez will receive the Grodin Family Fine Writers Award. \nThis program will be recorded and available for viewing for 30 days after the event. \nElm Street Books will sell copies and Henriquez will sign after the presentation. DESCRIPTION:Inland Wetlands Commission Regular Meeting is the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month at 7:30 p.m. \nThe Inland Wetlands Commission was established to conserve\, protect\, supervise\, and regulate the wetlands and watercourses within the Town of Wilton.  The Commission is comprised of seven members who serve in three year terms. \nThe Commission is responsible for administering the Inland Wetlands and Watercourse Regulations for the Town. The spring migration bird walk will explore Wilton Land Trust’s Schenck’s Island river walk. Together\, attendees will explore this birding hot spot that offers diverse habitats\, including open fields\, woodlands\, edges\, and swamps. \nDrizzle or shine\, Bear will lead a leisurely 2-hour walk\, pointing out various bird species\, defining calls\, explaining behaviors\, and answering questions. Whether participants are seasoned birders or new to birdwatching\, all are welcome for an exciting adventure. Witness first and foremost the beauty of migrating birds in Wilton. \nGrab binoculars\, water bottles\, supportive shoes\, tick and bug repellant\, and cameras\, and join in a morning of adventure\, exercise\, fresh air\, and learning. Additionally\, leave furry friends at home so they don’t scare off any wildlife we hope to see. \nParticipants have the chance to see and hear a diverse assortment of Neotropic migrants (returning from their southern wintering grounds). This includes Indigo Bunting\, Baltimore Oriole\, Scarlet Tanager\, Rose-breasted Grosbeak\, Eastern Kingbird\, Flycatchers\, and Vireos. See many Warbler species as well\, including Yellow\, Blue-winged\, Northern Parula\, Black and White\, and American Redstart to name a few. And with eyes kept to the sky\, attendees should hopefully see Wilton’s returning nesting pair of Osprey. These friends indeed nested for the first time in the Wilton Town Center in 2023! \nBear has been birding for over 30 years\, leading domestic and international trips for CT Audubon and other nature-based organizations. Bear really enjoys sharing his passion and enthusiasm for birds\, believing that\, experienced or novice\, there’s always something new to learn. He also currently resides in Wilton with his wife and two kids. \nThe Wilton Land Trust is a community-focused nonprofit organization that conserves land\, protects biodiversity\, enhances ecosystems\, and builds community.

Together\, participants will walk the trail across Spectacle Lane and into the Wilton Land Trust’s Spectacle Lane Trail to look and listen for birds\, and learn about the forest and its various habitats. \nWLT’s Executive Director will help attendees see the forest through the trees and Woodcock educator and birding enthusiast Tommy McCarthy will share his knowledge of all the species encountered. \nSo\, grab a water bottle\, supportive shoes\, tick and bug repellant\, a camera\, and binoculars\, and join WLT and Woodcock for a morning of adventure and learning. DESCRIPTION:The Planning and Zoning Commission is a nine-member elected body responsible for overseeing land use and development activity within Wilton. Key responsibilities of the commission are reviewing zoning regulation amendment applications\, changes to the Town’s zoning map\, and applications involving the subdivision of land\, and evaluating mandatory referrals from the Board of Selectmen. Additionally\, the commission oversees long-range planning initiatives\, including the preparation of the Town’s Plan of Conservation and Development. \nPlanning and Zoning Commission Regular Meetings typically occur on the second and fourth Mondays of the month\, from 7-9 p.m. \nMeetings can be attended by the public via the Zoom link. \nMembers of the public can submit written comments and questions via email to Land Use Director/Town Planner Michael Wrinn by 12 p.m. on the day of the meeting\, or members of the public can comment on Zoom at the appropriate time by raising a hand to notify the host of the intent to provide comments. Public participants will be promoted one at a time to provide comments live on Zoom.

SUMMARY:Poetry Discussion with Janet Krauss: The Poetry of John Lee Clark (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library online when Janet Krauss will lead a discussion of a selection of poems by John Lee Clark. Those registered will receive links to the poems and discussion questions in advance of the program. \nLee Clark brings awareness to what it’s like to “see” the world through his gift as a DeafBlind poet. He is an active spokesperson for his community. Working for the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development as a Braille and Proctactile Instructor\, he advocates for jobs for disabled people. Lee Clark has a happy family life with his wife and three sons. \nAs a promoter of Protactile Language\, he reminds one of how Helen Keller was taught to learn words by touch — feel the water running through her fingers in order to know the word water. Protactile Language is the opposite of Sign Language. The former is rooted in contact space as it is explained. John says\, “We feel language! Areas of the body are touched to express our feelings.” Participants will explore his experiences through his poems. \nNo charge for this program. Advance registration is required.
