DESCRIPTION:First Selectwoman Lynne Vanderslice will read a Proclamation for Domestic Violence Awareness Month on Tuesday\, Oct. 8\, at 9 a.m. at Wilton High School. \nMembers of the Wilton Domestic Violence Task Force\, Wilton Police\, Teen PeaceWorks and other officials will be there. The event has usually been held at Town Hall\, but this year has been moved to a new location at Wilton High School in front of the flagpole (corner of Catalpa Rd. and Kristine Lily Way) in order to include some of the student population. \nTraditionally the members of the Teen PeaceWorks group have tied purple ribbons around trees in Wilton Center–the same number as the number of domestic violence calls received by the Wilton Police for that year. Instead\, the task force will use purple pinwheels to represent the number of calls this year.

Representatives from Abilis will provide an overview about the Abilis LEAP Transition Program\, discuss the initial steps required to determine the potential programs and services a family member might consider\, and review the vocational skills\, life skills\, cognitive social development\, and community involvement that needs to be considered when living as an independent adult. DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Domestic Violence Task Force\, Wilton Teen PeaceWorks and Wilton Library are co-hosting “Is Your Daughter Safe? The Her-Self Awareness Lecture” about safety for young women\, and featuring the mother of a teen girl murdered in CT. \nDonna Cimarelli\, CEO and co-founder of the Maren Sanchez Foundation\, is the mother of Maren Sanchez\, a Milford\, CT teenager who died after being stabbed by an obsessed classmate in 2014. \nThis presentation\, “Her-Self Awareness Lecture” trains young people on how to use situational awareness to identify pre-incident indicators that can result in dangerous situations. The presentation also provides strategies on how to be an informed and active bystander to thwart what could potentially be a dangerous situation. The goal is to teach young women and girls how to trust and follow their instincts and pay attention to that gut feeling. \n The lecture on Thursday\, Oct. 10\, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Wilton Library\, is for teens\, parents\, grandparents and other members of the community to have the opportunity to hear Cimarelli’s story and benefit from her wisdom. This event enables Wilton residents to safely dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste by bringing it to the collection where a certified hazardous waste contractor will provide appropriate and responsible disposal of the unwanted products. \nNearly all households contain some household hazardous waste (HHW). HHW is generally defined as a household waste that is corrosive (such as acids and alkalis)\, flammable\, reactive or toxic (poisonous). Common HHW includes paint thinners\, pool chemicals\, pesticides\, mercury thermometers\, and gasoline. When these products are no longer wanted or needed\, they become hazardous waste and must be disposed of responsibly and safely so that they do not lead to personal injury and do not enter the food chain or contaminate drinking water supplies. SUMMARY:Wi-ACT Rise Against Hunger Volunteer Meal-Packaging Event
DESCRIPTION:Each year members of the Wilton community come together to participate in one of the most gratifying\, heartfelt volunteer efforts\, the Wilton Interfaith Action Committee‘s (WI-ACT) Rise Against Hunger Meal-Packaging Event. \nThis year’s meal packaging falls on Saturday\, Oct. 19\, when 700 Wilton volunteers will come together to work across four\, two-hour shifts over the course of a very full day\, to make a difference in the lives of children living in food insecurity around the world. \nIn full\, over the seven previous years of this event\, Wilton has packaged more than 1\,000\,000 meals\, each one providing a highly nutritious meal in a compact package. What’s more\, the program nourishes children in mind as well as body\, as recipient children are fed in educational settings\, helping contribute toward breaking the cycle of poverty and malnutrition. \nWilton Rise Against Hunger volunteers also help meet food sufficiency needs here locally as well\, by bringing non-perishable food items to the event for local food pantries. \nFor this year’s event\, Wi-ACT has set the same goal as last year of 150\,000 meals to be packaged in one day\, but financing for the bulk ingredients to meet that goal has become a bigger challenge this year. WI-ACT pays for the meal components in advance from the organizer\, highly rated nonprofit Rise Against Hunger\, Inc. at a cost of 31 cents per meal. That’s a bargain for these highly nutritious meals that feed over 400 children (at the 150\,000-meal level) for every day of an entire year but that price is an increase of two cents per meal over previous years and presents a major part of the financial challenge of again reaching the 150\,000-meal level\, to the total of $3\,000. \nA new feature of this year’s event will be a 40-ft. ocean-going container on site at the WEPCO Church Complex (36 New Canaan Rd.) where the meal-packaging is done. Some meals will already be pre-loaded from other events\, but the majority of the meals it will contain are to be from this Wilton event. Once the Wilton event ends and all of the meals packaged that day in Wilton have been loaded\, the container will be sealed and immediately driven dockside to be loaded on a ship and delivered\, most likely to Somalia. \nAnyone who would like to volunteer for meal-packaging is welcome to participate. Individuals and families (with members as young as 7-years-old who take on the very important “runner” responsibility\, up to senior citizens) can join in the work to make it an uplifting and exciting full-family experience! Interested participants can sign up for a shift online. \nOrganizers are asking for community members to consider donating to help pay for the bulk ingredients so that Wi-ACT can hit the goal of 150\,000 meals. All funds raised go to pay for those bulk ingredients. DESCRIPTION:Bring the whole family to Woodcock Nature Center for a one-of-a-kind hiking and beer tasting experience at Frothy Forage. At secret locations along the Woodcock trails\, we’ll feature a unique craft brew from our partner Nod Hill Brewery (plus soda tasting with Hosmer Mountain Soda!). And\, if that isn’t enough\, we’ll delight the senses along your trek with everything from animal encounters\, s’mores and kids fun to live music\, and food for purchase from Taproot Restaurant. Furry family members will enjoy some sips and goodies along the trek courtesy of Ridgefield Pet! All proceeds benefit educational programs at the nature center. \n21-plus admission is $45 and includes one souvenir tasting glass per ticket purchased and a one-of-a-kind trek through the woods and wetlands of Woodcock\, with three hours of unlimited sampling at stations. Test out virtual reality; ride a Hovercraft; try your hand at calligraphy or Zentangle Art; make jewelry\, gift tags and button pins; make button pins and thumbprint magnets; experiment with LEDs; watch 3-D printing; meet the Wilton Library’s Robotics team; get a Henna or spray tattoo; paint pumpkins donated by Wilton Kiwanis; have a Green Screen photo taken; learn about silk screening Rocketry; meet a silk screen artist and a quilter who makes her own dyes; personalize a luggage tag; make a Paracord bracelet; take apart a computer\, and so much more! \nBubble & Brew will be parked outside selling their delicious drinks and baked goods. The day is free and open to all ages! Certain activities will have a nominal fee to offset costs. Event sponsors are Wilton Hardware and Ring’s End; the media sponsor is GOOD Morning Wilton.
