SUMMARY:Birds & Binoculars: A Birding Expedition — Exploring nature and spotting wildlife
DESCRIPTION:Drizzle or Shine\, Rain Date — Saturday\, May 25 \nThe birding expedition is led by expert birder\, environmentalist\, gardener\, and Wilton resident Joe Bear. The spring migration bird walk will explore Wilton Land Trust’s Schenck’s Island river walk. Together\, attendees will explore this birding hot spot that offers diverse habitats\, including open fields\, woodlands\, edges\, and swamps. \nDrizzle or shine\, Bear will lead a leisurely 2-hour walk\, pointing out various bird species\, defining calls\, explaining behaviors\, and answering questions. Whether participants are seasoned birders or new to birdwatching\, all are welcome for an exciting adventure. Witness first and foremost the beauty of migrating birds in Wilton. \nGrab binoculars\, water bottles\, supportive shoes\, tick and bug repellant\, and cameras\, and join in a morning of adventure\, exercise\, fresh air\, and learning. Additionally\, leave furry friends at home so they don’t scare off any wildlife we hope to see. \nParticipants have the chance to see and hear a diverse assortment of Neotropic migrants (returning from their southern wintering grounds). This includes Indigo Bunting\, Baltimore Oriole\, Scarlet Tanager\, Rose-breasted Grosbeak\, Eastern Kingbird\, Flycatchers\, and Vireos. See many Warbler species as well\, including Yellow\, Blue-winged\, Northern Parula\, Black and White\, and American Redstart to name a few. And with eyes kept to the sky\, attendees should hopefully see Wilton’s returning nesting pair of Osprey. These friends indeed nested for the first time in the Wilton Town Center in 2023! \nBear has been birding for over 30 years\, leading domestic and international trips for CT Audubon and other nature-based organizations. Bear really enjoys sharing his passion and enthusiasm for birds\, believing that\, experienced or novice\, there’s always something new to learn. He also currently resides in Wilton with his wife and two kids. \nThe Wilton Land Trust is a community-focused nonprofit organization that conserves land\, protects biodiversity\, enhances ecosystems\, and builds community.

SUMMARY:Wilton Historical Society Victorian Tea Service
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wilton Historical Society for an afternoon filled with delicious teas\, delectable bites\, gorgeous flowers and memories created with loved ones! \nThe classic Afternoon Tea is a tradition born around 1840 when members of the British aristocracy felt the need to fill the long gap between the lunch and dinner menus. Consequently\, afternoon tea accompanied by a delicate snack became a staple and symbol of both the Victorian period and the wealth of the British Empire. As the popularity of the service grew\, certain utensils\, menus\, and etiquette developed along with it. \nThe Wilton Historical Society is excited to present their very own Victorian Tea Service on May 11 from 1 – 3 p.m.. Guests will enjoy a beautifully decorated tent in the courtyard of the Society’s campus. Also find all of the classically magnificent details expected from a 19th century tea service. A Dash of Salt will provide delicious teas and bites alongside a presentation on the History of Tea with an expert from Bigelow Tea. \nWildbloom Skincare and Bigelow Tea generously sponsor this event. \nWild Roses and Blooms generously provide the flowers and arrangements. \nTickets are $60 per person for Wilton Historical Society Members; $75 per person for Non-Members. Registration is required. \nVisit online or email to reserve a spot today! \nTake Note: This event is seated\, if you would like to sit with another party\, specify in the notes section upon registration.

SUMMARY:Poetry Discussion with Janet Krauss: The Poetry of John Lee Clark (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library online when Janet Krauss will lead a discussion of a selection of poems by John Lee Clark. Those registered will receive links to the poems and discussion questions in advance of the program. \nLee Clark brings awareness to what it’s like to “see” the world through his gift as a DeafBlind poet. He is an active spokesperson for his community. Working for the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development as a Braille and Proctactile Instructor\, he advocates for jobs for disabled people. Lee Clark has a happy family life with his wife and three sons. \nAs a promoter of Protactile Language\, he reminds one of how Helen Keller was taught to learn words by touch — feel the water running through her fingers in order to know the word water. Protactile Language is the opposite of Sign Language. The former is rooted in contact space as it is explained. John says\, “We feel language! Areas of the body are touched to express our feelings.” Participants will explore his experiences through his poems. \nNo charge for this program. Advance registration is required. Register online to receive the Zoom session invitation link\, and readings packet. Email Caryn Friedman-Quinn with any questions.
