SUMMARY:1959 in Jazz History with Gil Harel: Coltrane's Giant Steps
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for the third program of their new four-part series with Dr. Gil Harel on the seminal jazz albums of 1959.The series will run as follows: \n3/20/24: Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue\n4/10/24: Dave Brubeck’s Time Out\n5/22/24: John Coltrane’s Giant Steps\n6/18/24: Jazz Post-1959 Diverging Paths \nThe year 1959 was an exceptionally busy year for John Coltrane. Indeed\, the iconic saxophone player and composer was featured prominently on Kind of Blue (the style of that record — modal jazz — would be one that Coltrane would revisit in subsequent years). Later in the year\, he recorded an album that would become one of the most influential in the genre: Giant Steps. The name of the album proved apropos. The unprecedented chord progressions and improvisational patterns leap rose Coltrane’s status to that of a legend. Even today\, multiple tracks on the record remain standard practice templates for aspiring saxophone players. Join Professor Harel in diving into this massively influential album’s history and score. \nHarel (PhD\, Brandeis University) is a musicologist and music theorist whose interests include styles ranging from the western classical repertoire to jazz. Currently\, he is Full Professor of Music at CT State Naugatuck Valley\, where he received the AFT “Merit Award for Exemplary Service to the College” for 6 consecutive years. At NVCC\, Dr. Harel conducts the college chorale\, a cappella ensemble\, teaches music history and theory\, and serves as musical director of theater productions. \nRegister online or call 203.762.6334.

SUMMARY:Shakespeare on the Sound's Romeo and Juliet
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for a special program just in time for Shakespeare on the Sound’s annual summer production of Romeo and Juliet in Rowayton’s Pinkney Park (June 12-June 30). This is their 28th year presenting Shakespeare’s plays outdoors. \nFun Facts About Romeo And Juliet:\n– Romeo and Juliet first meet on a Sunday evening. Four days later — on Wednesday evening — Romeo drinks poison and Juliet stabs herself. “Worst week ever\,” as one Shakespearean scholar puts it.\n– Juliet is 13 years old. Romeo’s age is unknown.\n– Dante first mentions the feud between the families in the early 1300’s.\n– In 1662 Mary Saunderson made stage history as the first woman to play Juliet\, 150 years after London audiences first saw Shakespeare’s play with a boy playing Juliet. \nShakespeare on the Sound Education Director and Macbeth/Christmas Carol actor Nick Urda and board member/Shakespeare teacher John Love guide audiences through Romeo and Juliet and\, in an interactive presentation\, hope to exemplify why Juliet and Romeo might be a more fitting title for the play. They’ll also incite the question: were they really in love? \nRegistration is suggested online or call 203.762.6334.

SUMMARY:The Story of Chinese Musical Tradition: A Keeper of Asian Heritage Music
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for a special program about the Chinese musical tradition in celebration of Asian American\, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Enjoy musical instrument demonstrations and professional performance. \nWilton residents Anchi Lin and her son\, New York- and Boston-based conductor Julian Gau\, will present information and demonstrate several traditional classical instruments from China. Two musicians from the Chinese Music Ensemble of New York will then perform on their chosen instruments: \n– Xiao-ran Eric Liu\, an outstanding Bamboo Flute professional with an innovative approach to western instruments\n– Rini Zhang\, a virtuoso Erhu player and opera singer focusing on diverse styles of performing repertoire \nChinese classical music preserved many ancient musical elements from the historical Asia regions. Through the Silk Road\, musicians and merchants from the Middle East\, Central Asia\, and South Asia brought their music and instruments to China. The capital of China\, from around 200 BC until 14 AD\, was like New York or Paris nowadays. For example\, many traveled and brought their cultural heritages there. Over about 1600 years\, Chinese musicians observed and preserved some of the instruments and musical elements that came from different parts of Asia. These aspects ended up in what we now understand to be “Chinese classical music”. The heritage “Chinese” music is a story of continuous integration and infusion of diverse musical traditions from different parts of Asia. \nMusic is a powerful way to connect and continue such historical memories from the past. Many of the nomadic tribes were lost through centuries of wars or political struggles. However\, the instruments and genres kept by the traditional Chinese music tradition can provide a glimpse into their musical heritages. \nNo charge for this event co-sponsored by Wilton Library and the Chinese Music Ensemble of New York. \nRegister online or call 203-762-6334.

SUMMARY:WLA/SCORE: Simple Steps to a Well-Run Business — Operate
DESCRIPTION:The first session of this three-part workshop series at Wilton Library focuses on the current state of a business — the people and the numbers. This will discuss how to better understand the financials and key metrics\, as well as optimizing relationships with the business’ people: employees\, clients and suppliers. \nWhat will be covered:\n– Understanding the relationship between profitability and cash flow — and why to focus on both\n– Visualizing key trends\n– Identifying key metrics that define your business\n– Tools to track your financial information\n–  Why relationships are key to business success\n– Noting the various relationships your business has: employees\, customers\, vendors\, and how to maximize them\nNote*: The intended participants for these three workshops are growing and established business owners. \nRobert Harvey developed and scaled two business systems from inception during his business career. Harvey replicated university student trained fence companies to do this. In his forties and fifties\, Harvey dominated the internet for healthcare products in the senior home accessibility field. The utilization of over 100 keywords in Google for more than a decade developed into a lead generation business. This resulted in excess of 200\,000 leads that covered 85% of North America with 200 affiliates. In addition\, Harvey was able to develop over 22 Silver Cross locations. His company was purchased by a publicly traded company on the TSX (SIS). Specialties: Franchise development\, market share penetration\, website SEO\, salesforce customization and business model replication. \nSee event listing online for registration link.

SUMMARY:Naturescape Your Yard with Karen Bussolini (Zoom & In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:Wilton Library is excited to present gardener extraordinaire Karen Bussolini in the live Zoom program\, “Naturescape Your Yard\,” on Thursday\, May 30\, at 6:30 p.m. This is a hybrid program: watch with others in the Rimer Room\, or remotely on Zoom. \nNaturescaping is landscaping with nature — attracting and sustaining wildlife\, using native and and well-adapted plants\, using resources wisely\, and avoiding environmental pollution. But it also means landscaping like nature. Nobody plants\, waters or fertilizes the forest or the prairie\, yet they survive\, beautifully\, on their own. Naturescaping\, or ecological landscaping\, creates self-sustaining landscapes that function like nature. \nBussolini will show how to create environment-friendly landscapes that work with nature to reduce maintenance and costs while increasing beauty and enjoyment. She will show inspiring examples of gardens from across the country that conserve resources — time and money as well as natural resources. They also foster diversity\, sustain wildlife\, provide food and incorporate environmentally sound practices to create sustainable yards. \n“Naturescape Your Yard” is informed by the work of notable ecologists and ecological designers. It also stems from a deep understanding that everything comes from and goes somewhere. It is all connected. The presentation includes big-picture ecological thinking as well as nitty-gritty how-to tips. Additionally\, the images of sustainable yards and gardens presented serve the needs of the people who use them\, look attractive\, and function as small ecosystems. \nBussolini has been a gardener all her life. She trained as a painter and was an architectural photographer earlier on. Her specialization is now in garden photography\, writing\, speaking and eco-friendly garden coaching/design. She is additionally a Northeast Organic Farmers Association (NOFA) accredited Organic Land Care Professional. Among others\, Anne Raver’s feature\, “A Connecticut Hillside of Feisty Beauties” in The New York Times spotlights Bussolini’s garden. \nRegistration for this program is required. Please register online at www.wiltonlibrary.org\, or call (203) 762-6334.
