SUMMARY:Wilton Library: Cut the Cord (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:“Cut the Cord” is an entertaining Zoom presentation meant to help cable-TV customers break the expensive and often frustrating cable service cycle. Learn how to get out of a cable service agreement\, find and negotiate the best internet/broadband access deal\, and get started with streaming services for a vast range of entertainment options… many of which are free! \nThis online event will be held on Zoom on Tuesday\, Feb. 15 from 7 p.m.-8 p.m. \nThis presentation is led by consumer rights advocate and tech writer James Gifford. The workshop covers the details of streaming equipment (some of which attendees may already own) and how to explore the ever-expanding list of channels and services that streaming—as well as the “forgotten” free resource of broadcast TV—can bring to your living room. Support issues such as quality home WiFi and low-cost home phone service are covered as well. You don’t need advanced technical expertise… just the right information! \nRegistration required. To register\, visit the Wilton library website.

SUMMARY:Wilton Library: Jorie Graham: Poetry as contagious ceremony that might save the world (In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Wilton Library in person in the Brubeck Room for a four-week literature seminar led by Judson Scruton\, who will take us through selected works by the poet Jorie Graham. She has been called one of the most celebrated poets of the American post-war generation by the Poetry Foundation. \nAccording to poet-critic Calvin Bedient\, she is “never less than in dialogue with everything. She is the world champion at shot-putting the great questions. It hardly matters what the title is: the subject itself is always ‘the outermost question being asked me by the World today.’” \nAdvance registration is required. Register online or call 203.762.6334. There is no charge for this program. By registering for the first session you will automatically be registered for all four sessions. This lecture series is made possible with the support of the Literary Series in Memory of Amy Quigley. Please email Andrea Sato with any questions.

SUMMARY:Energy Efficiency and the Historic House: Presentation by Marena Wisniewski and Todd Levine/CT State Preservation Office (SHPO)
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Wilton Historical Society in collaboration with Wilton Go Green on Zoom on Thursday\, Feb. 17 from 1 p.m.-2 p.m. \nIt’s the age-old adage: “the greenest house is the one already built.” Historic houses are inherently sustainable\, with features built in to capitalize on using and retaining energy. Historic houses can also be updated in appropriate ways to make them even more efficient\, some of which you can do yourself. Join us as we share helpful tips and case studies to help owners save money on their bills\, help the environment\, and maintain their homes — all at the same time! \nDon’t miss this detailed presentation by two experts! \nMarena Wisniewski serves as the State Register Coordinator for the Connecticut State Historic Preservation Office\, as well as an environmental reviewer and coordinator of the Women’s and Minority History Trail. Prior to coming to Hartford\, she was the Preservation & Public Engagement Officer at the Providence Preservation Society\, as well as a private consultant serving New York City. She holds an MS in Historic Preservation from Columbia University and a MA in World History from NYU. With a specific concentration in materials science\, she spends most of her free time researching building performance and arguing with window salesmen. \nTodd Levine is an architectural historian with a Master’s degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Georgia. Todd has worked at inspecting\, studying\, and preserving Connecticut’s historic resources since 2003. Todd was the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation’s (now Preservation Connecticut) Preservation Services Officer from 2006-2009 and from 2009-2012 he was Director of the Historic Barns of Connecticut program\, one of the most comprehensive barn programs in the nation. Todd is the chairman of the Historic Properties Commission of the Town of Hamden and has been at the Connecticut State Historic Preservation Office as an architectural historian\, Freedom Trail coordinator\, and environmental reviewer since 2013. \nTo register please email info@wiltonhistorical.org\n$10 Suggested Donation

SUMMARY:ART at The Wilton Playshop
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Playshop is proud to present the witty and clever play\, Art by Yasmina Reza. Directed by Lynne Colatrella\, the show will run from Feb. 11-26. \n“Art is a wildly funny and naughtily provocative comedy about three long time friends who find their relationship on shaky ground when one of them buys an expensive white on white painting. The painting soon becomes a metaphor as the friends stumble into the ravines that have developed unnoticed\, or unacknowledged\, between the disparate paths their lives have taken. Lines are drawn\, and the friends must decide how (or whether) to surrender old territory to find new common ground. \nArt is the winner of the Molière Award for Best Author\, the 1998 Tony Award for Best Play and the 1996 Olivier Award for Best Comedy. \nVisit the Wilton Playshop website for more information and specific showtimes.  \n\nTickets:\nAdult: $35.00\nSenior / Student: $30.00\n\n\n90 minutes\, no intermission

SUMMARY:Writing a Legacy Letter (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wilton Library on Wednesday\, Feb. 23\, from 7 p.m.-8 p.m. on Zoom for a workshop on writing your own legacy letter. \nA legacy letter (also called an “ethical will”) is a written document that allows you to share your life lessons\, express your values and transmit your blessings to future generations. A legacy letter is shorter than a memoir\, typically just a few pages. Writing one is a rewarding experience that creates an enduring gift for family\, friends and other loved ones. \nThis introductory workshop includes discussion and brief writing exercises to help you examine your life history\, explore your values and capture important insights. It offers advice\, encouragement and a model structure to help you draft and complete your own legacy letter. Because this is an interactive workshop\, attendance is limited to 20 attendees. \nJay Sherwin created the Life Reflections Project to educate people about legacy letters and ethical wills; he now teaches classes and workshops on legacy writing and helps people craft their own legacy documents. \nRegistration required. Attendance is limited but a waitlist is available once the session is full. To register and for more information\, visit the Wilton Library website.

SUMMARY:Booked for Lunch: Free the Beaches The Story of Ned Coll and the Battle for America’s Most Exclusive Shoreline
DESCRIPTION:Join the next Booked for Lunch Book Talk on Zoom at 12:30 p.m.–1:30 p.m. on Thursday\, Feb. 24! \nLooking for a great read that is engaging and informative? The Wilton Historical Society hosts a lunchtime book discussion group that focuses on history. We welcome one and all! \nThe topic of this session will be Free the Beaches: The Story of Ned Coll and the Battle for America’s Most Exclusive Shoreline by Andrew Kahrl \nThis is the story of our separate and unequal America in the making\, and one man’s fight against it. \n“In Free the Beaches\, Andrew Kahrl not only tells the remarkable story of activist Ned Coll. He also shows that on the Connecticut shore\, white liberalism and racial exclusion went hand in hand.” —Jason Sokol\, author of All Eyes Are Upon Us: Race and Politics from Boston to Brooklyn \nDuring the long\, hot summers of the late 1960s and 1970s\, one man began a campaign to open some of America’s most exclusive beaches to minorities and the urban poor. That man was anti-poverty activist and one-time presidential candidate Ned Coll of Connecticut\, a state that permitted public access to a mere seven miles of its 253-mile shoreline. Nearly all of the state’s coast was held privately\, for the most part by white\, wealthy residents. \nThis book is the first to tell the story of the controversial protester who gathered a band of determined African American mothers and children and challenged the racist\, exclusionary tactics of homeowners in a state synonymous with liberalism. Coll’s legacy of remarkable successes—and failures—illuminates how our nation’s fragile coasts have not only become more exclusive in subsequent decades but also have suffered greater environmental destruction and erosion as a result of that private ownership. \nWinner of the 2019 Connecticut Book Awards\, non-fiction category\, sponsored by Connecticut Center for the Book and Winner of the Homer D. Babbidge Award\, sponsored by the Association for the Study of Connecticut History\, Andrew W. Kahrl is Professor of History and African American Studies and Co-Director of The Repair Lab at the University of Virginia. He is the author of the award-winning books The Land Was Ours: How Black Beaches Became White Wealth in the Coastal South and Free the Beaches: The Story of Ned Coll and the Battle for America’s Most Exclusive Shoreline\, and numerous articles and essays on the history of racial segregation and environmental inequality in the 20th century US. \nPlease register by emailing info@wiltonhistorical.org \nSuggested contribution: $10

SUMMARY:The Modern American Novel with Mark Schenker (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Mark Schenker of Yale College returns via Zoom in a continuation of his 2021 lectures on classic novels\, presented by the Wilton Library. \nBeginning on Feb. 24\, the event will run from 7 p.m.-8 p.m. every Thursday except for Mar. 10.  \nHaving discussed the Victorian novel last spring and the modern British novel this past fall\, he turns now to American fiction in the first decades of the 20th century. With reference to masterworks by five acclaimed American authors\, he will consider the changing nature of the novel as an art form\, the rise of modernism\, the influence of the First World War\, and the ways in which American fiction of the period resembles and differs from English novels of the same era. \nAttendees are not expected to read or reread all or even any of the novels\, but a familiarity with them will of course make the lectures more meaningful. Here are the novels for each week: February 24 – The House of Mirth\, March 3 – Winesburg\, Ohio\, March 17 – This Side of Paradise\, March 24 – In Our Time\, March 31 – The Sound and the Fury. \nThis lecture series is made possible with the support of the Literary Series in Memory of Amy Quigley. Advance registration required. Register online or call 203-762-6334. You will automatically be registered for all five sessions in the series. To register\, visit the Wilton Library website.
