SUMMARY:“Spirits of the Past” at Historic Sharp Hill Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:A Historic Walk and Re-Enactment with Wilton Historian Bob Russell \nOn Saturday\, Nov. 2 from 11 a.m.-12 p.m.\, a most unusual tour of Wilton’s oldest burial ground\, the historic Sharp Hill Cemetery\, will be offered. Portrayed by re-enactors\, six of our town’s intrepid early settlers (each buried there) will describe their role in Wilton’s history. Some of the historic figures portrayed will include the thrice married Sarah Lockwood Selleck Hickox (1678-1765)\, Matthew Gregory (1680-1777) and Hannah Keeler Gregory (1687-1767). The history of the cemetery itself will be explored by Wilton history expert and former first selectman Bob Russell. \nThe Sharp Hill Cemetery\, owned by the Wilton Congregational Church\, is the oldest surviving cemetery in Wilton\, dating from 1738. That year\, John Marvin gave 64 square rods (4/10 of an acre) to the “Presbyterian or Congregational Society of Wilton” as the site of a meeting house for the worship of God\, as the Society had outgrown the small building in which they had started 12 years earlier. The cemetery was to surround the new meeting house. Although the church building which was built there only lasted until 1790\, the cemetery was used actively until the mid-1800’s and then was gradually replaced by Hillside Cemetery on Ridgefield Rd.\, which had the advantage of more space. \nThe men and women who are buried in Sharp Hill Cemetery include founders of Wilton\, church leaders\, and 23 veterans of the Revolutionary or the French and Indian Wars. Many of the family names found here are still familiar in Wilton today in person or on street signs\, including Abbott\, Belden\, DeForest\, Dudley\, Fitch\, Gaylord\, Gilbert\, Gregory\, Grumman\, Hurlbutt\, Lambert\, Olmstead\, Raymond\, St. John\, and Sturges. There are about 150 legible gravestones\, including about 70 from the 18th century\, plus another 150 or so stones no longer legible or graves marked only with common fieldstones. Many of the older gravestones have ornate skull carvings and other interesting designs. Because of the fragile nature of many of the stones\, gravestone rubbing is definitely discouraged. \nThe talk is co-sponsored by the Wilton Historical Society and the Wilton Congregational Church. DESCRIPTION:Drum Hill Daughters of the American Revolution is sponsoring clean-up of Comstock Cemetery on Ridgefield Rd./Rte 33. \nThe Comstock Cemetery is located behind a hill on the west side of Ridgefield Rd.\, just south of Signal Hill Rd. North. There rest more than 60 forefathers of Wilton and their family members. It was opened during the Revolution in 1782 and is the third oldest burial yard in the Town. Burials continued to be made here until 1851. A marker at the southern entrance\, placed by the Drum Hill Chapter of the DAR\, marks the cemetery as the resting place of seven Revolutionary War soldiers.

DESCRIPTION:Music on the Hill invites all to enjoy the inaugural performance of the Community Children’s Chorus (2nd-8th grades)\, alongside the 40-person Festival Chorus. “Songs of Thanksgiving” honors the season\, and includes some beautiful familiar tunes\, alongside original pieces inspired by the Wabanaki tribes and the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke. \nWilton’s renowned harpist Wendy Kerner will be featured in a world premier\, composed for her by Dr. Ed Thompson from the Unitarian Church in Westport. Artistic director Ellen Dickinson will conduct all works\, including several beautiful pieces of her own. A lovely concert to honor and give thanks to the world we live in. DESCRIPTION:With Election Day Cake! \nKids 8-and-up can search the Wilton Historical Society’s historic 18th and 19th century buildings with clues in hand\, peering into corners\, lofts\, nooks and crannies of historic houses and barns. Delicious and historic Election Day Cake will be served. \nSuggested for ages 8 and up. The cost for Wilton Historical Society members is $10 per child per family; for non-members is $15 per family. Please register via email or call 203.762.7257. \nDid You Know? \n“Unlike today\, in the 18th and 19th centuries\, Election Day met with great celebration. Voters came to major cities like Hartford to cast their ballots and then stayed to socialize and celebrate their democratic freedoms. Often\, city residents hosted elaborate banquets where the dessert course consisted of coffee\, hot cider\, and a generous portion of Election Cake. \n“Election Cake is a cross between bread and cake. Full of fruits and nuts\, this rich dessert became a staple of Election Day celebrations. While there are numerous variations to the recipe\, one submitted by a Mrs. Charles Flagg of Hartford in 1890 included butter\, sugar\, flour\, eggs\, baking powder\, raisins\, currants\, citron\, almonds\, vanilla\, and milk. \n“Although the cake began its association with the city of Hartford in the 1830s\, Connecticut recipes for it date back to 1771. Back then\, colonists might consume Election Cake during daylong town meetings or as a reward for their service after a long day of voting. Sometimes political party advocates handed out Election Cake to those who voted a straight ticket (voting for the same political party for every office). \n“In the early 19th century\, as the parades and balls held in Hartford became more elaborate\, Connecticut residents began identifying Election Day with the city of Hartford and the celebrations there became one of the great festivals in the state. As a result\, Election Cake soon established itself as a Hartford tradition. \n“The popularity of Election Cake got a real boost from its publication in a reprint of Amelia Simmons’s recipe book\, American Cookery\, in 1800. At a time when women faced little opportunity to display their political loyalty\, individuals like Amelia Simmons made food not only social but patriotic as well. Her recipe for Election Cake called for 30 quarts of flour\, 10 pounds of butter\, 14 pounds of sugar\, 12 pounds of raisins\, and three dozen eggs—an indication of the many mouths it was meant to feed. \n“Election Cake became the first food strongly associated with American politics. What made it more unique and important was the way it provided women with an opportunity to express their commitment to their new country. This was no trivial outlet in an era that prohibited women from voting. SUMMARY:Fall Walk-A-Thon at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Academy
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, Nov. 8\, at 12:45 p.m.\, Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Academy will hold its Fall Walk-A-Thon. This is one of the school’s major fundraising events of the year\, but it will also benefit the community–10% of all funds raised in the walk-a-thon will be donated to local area food banks (Norwalk and Wilton). \nStudents and faculty will walk a designated route on the school and adjacent church property. Each grade will choose a canonized saint to remember and honor in their walk. “The saints will be our inspiration for the walk\,” said school principal Stanley Steele. “The walk-a-thon is a perfect opportunity for our students to see what ‘service above self’ really means. We work hard to instill the notion of giving back to the community and helping those in need\, as the saints did. And we’ll have a little fun in the process\, too.” \nIn addition to working on class projects to showcase their spirit and support for the event\, students have garnered pledges of support from family\, friends and neighbors. Businesses and individuals interested in supporting walk-a-thon participants are also welcome to make donations and may contact the school. The deadline for walk-a-thon donations is Nov. 8\, 2019. \nThe Fall Walk-A-Thon will take place at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Academy\, 225 Danbury Rd.\, Wilton.

This short film follows an intimate conversation between a young boy and his beloved great-grandfather\, an Auschwitz survivor\, sharing memories and lessons of the Holocaust with a new generation. \nThe screening will be followed by an audience Q&A with Elliott Saiontz\, the film’s young narrator; his mother\, Stacey Saiontz; and acclaimed artist Jeff Scher\, a Westport resident\, whose rotoscope animation brings the film’s archival footage and photos to life. The discussion will be moderated by The Rev. John D. Betit from Christ & Holy Trinity Church. \nThe Number on Great-Grandpa’s Arm is an approachable way to teach about the Holocaust\, suitable for ages 9-years-old and up. This film can help our youngest generation understand the Holocaust while teaching the importance of standing up against bigotry and hatred\, and the transformative power of hope.
