SUMMARY:Rise Against Hunger Benefit Concert Talent Show at Middlebrook
DESCRIPTION:This Wednesday\, June 13\, Middlebrook School is holding the annual Rise Against Hunger Benefit Concert Talent Show at 7:30 p.m. in the school’s auditorium. Under Middlebrook instructional leader Janet Nobles and music educator Susan Kelly‘s direction and with Middlebrook student leadership (this year\, by eighth graders Grace Cristini and Samantha Victor)\, this annual concert has been a cornerstone of the Wilton Interfaith Action Committee‘s (Wi-ACT) fundraising efforts for doing its annual 160\,000 meal packaging event in October. Half of the gate receipts (by attendee donation) go to the Wi-ACT October event and the other half go to help to fund a separate 10\,000-meal packaging event at Middlebrook\, organized by Middlebrook students themselves.

SUMMARY:Clean-up on Wilton Loop of Norwalk River Valley Trail
DESCRIPTION:The next clean-up on the Wilton Loop of the Norwalk River Valley Trail will be on Father’s Day\, Sunday\, June 17\, 9:30-11 a.m.. \nCharlie Taney\, NRVT’s executive director\, makes the pitch that spending time with dad volunteering to help in the cleanup makes a great\, unique Father’s Day gift. “And\, the cleanup will be done by 11:30 a.m.\, so dads will get home just in time for their Father’s Day brunch\,” he adds. \nThe June 17 clean-up is a major effort to push back the vegetation that’s encroaching on the NRVT. Two teams are being organized: one will start at Rte. 7 across from the commuter lot and work north; the other team will start at the Autumn Ridge parking lot and work south. \nHelp is needed in each of the two locations. Volunteers are asked to email Charlie Taney to sign on to help\, choose a clean-up location\, and provide the number of people in your volunteer group.

SUMMARY:Conservation Commission Walk–Quarry Head State Park
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Conservation Commission\, in collaboration with the Wilton Garden Club\, Norwalk River Watershed Association\, and Wilton Land Conservation Trust (WLCT) will offer a guided walk in Quarry Head State Park on Sunday\, June 24 at 1 p.m.. Quarry Head is owned by the State of Connecticut and managed by the Town of Wilton. The walk will include the adjacent Harrison-Smith property\, owned by WLCT. \nThe walk\, to be led by one of the Conservation commissioners\, will follow the newly installed trail-work addressing erosion of one hillside. Designed and implemented by volunteers\, this pathway also improves the ease of climbing that hill and provides clearer guidance for hikers in this area of the park. Attendees will also see the “deer exclosure” established about a decade ago as an experiment to assess impact on the understory when deer are kept away from the plants growing beneath the tree canopy. \nFollowing the walk\, there will be refreshments and time to ask questions and to visit with neighbors and representatives of the organizations sponsoring the walk. \nQuarry Head Park is located on Ridgefield Rd./Rte. 33\, north\, just south of Millstone Rd.. A narrow driveway leads into the park and there are parking spaces once at the end of the driveway. The driveway will be marked with balloons\, as the post and sign indicating its location was damaged by winter storms. \nThe walk will begin near the ruins of a former home on the property at the picnic table overlooking Long Island Sound. The Commission recommends attendees wear long pants tucked into socks and long sleeved shirt. All are welcome\, including dogs on leash. \nThose who pre-register at conservationevent@wiltonct.org will be contacted should weather require postponement of the walk. \nALSO\, SAVE THE DATE! Details of another walk\, to be held July 8 at 10 a.m. at Weir Farm to be led by Weir Farm staff\, will be announced shortly.

SUMMARY:Colonial Cookery at Wilton Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:One of the most valuable tools in the Mount Vernon kitchen was Mrs. Washington’s copy of The Art of Cookery\, Made Plain and Easy; Which far exceeds any Thing of the Kind yet published… By a Lady. Martha Washington’s original copy is part of the special collections at Mount Vernon\, and includes the marvelous Peach Pir. \nPeach Pir is a dessert which takes advantage of summer’s bounty of ripe fruit. The Wilton Historical Society will hold a Colonial Cookery and Customs Workshop for Kids\, in which museum educator Lola Chen will be showing the children how to make a delicious modern spin on Peach Pir by preparing a crumb crust\, custard and fresh diced peaches. \nThe Colonial Cookery and Customs for Kids workshop teaches kids a “reciept” (recipe) used in the Connecticut region. While the food is prepared\, they hear about Colonial manners\, morals and way of life. The monthly workshops feature relatively simple dishes made with local\, seasonal ingredients\, adapted for modern kitchens. All participants will sample their own cooking and take home recipe cards–as well as any leftovers! The children will learn how a Colonial kitchen would have operated\, in order to appreciate the modern conveniences we take for granted. Previous sessions have made bannock cakes\, pease porridge\, pickles\, an amulet of green peas\, apple tansey\, fairy butter\, pumpkin bread\, cranberry shortbread\, New Year’s “cakes”\, New England chowder\, hand pies\, cheese and ramp soufflé\, pea and watercress Rappahannock\, blackberry maslin\, thirded bread\, pound cake with “Oranges” juice\, maple cup custard and pepper pot soup. \nSuggested for ages 6-12. Members: $10; Non-members $15. Space is limited\, please register by via email or call 203.762.7257. \nThe Wilton Historical Society\, 224 Danbury Road/Rt. 7\, Wilton\, CT 06897 www.wiltonhistorical.org
