SUMMARY:Bullets\, Bonds\, and Butter: Wilton Responds to War 1776-2006
DESCRIPTION:Opening on March 15\, Bullets\, Bonds\, and Butter:  Wilton Responds to War\, 1776-2006\, the new exhibition at the Wilton Historical Society\, commemorates the contributions of both the soldiers and the townsfolk who answered the call of war. While troops fought on the front lines\, Wilton residents of all ages back at home were engaged in supporting the war effort in ways both large and small. Rationing\, writing letters to the troops\, knitting socks and making bandages\, buying war bonds\, manufacturing diverse supplies\, spotting airplanes from observation towers\, collecting scrap\, sending soccer balls to underprivileged children around the world\, and in some cases\, protesting against war were all part of the response. \nBullets\, Bonds\, and Butter:  Wilton Responds to War\, 1776-2006 includes material from the Revolutionary War\, the War of 1812\, the Civil War\, World War I\, World War II\, the Korean War\, the Viet Nam War\, and the war in Iraq. To mark the anniversary of the birth of the American Legion in March of 1919\, the Wilton Historical Society worked with Adjutant Tom Moore of Wilton’s James B. Whipple Post 86 to develop a special section on the history of the organization\, which includes some of their artifacts. \nThe opening day of the exhibition\, Friday\, March 15 from 2-3 p.m.\, will be celebrated with a “birthday” cake to honor Wilton’s Post 86 and the American Legion. All are invited!

SUMMARY:"Guys and Dolls" at The Wilton Playshop
DESCRIPTION:Based on the stories and characters by Damon Runyon\, with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows\, Guys and Dolls is an oddball romantic comedy. The show features some of the most cherished show tunes in American musical theatre\, including\, “Fugue for Tinhorns\,” “Luck Be a Lady\,” and “Sit Down\, You’re Rockin’ the Boat.” \nPerformances: \nApril 26\, 27\, May 2\, 3\, 4\, 9\, 10\, and 11 at 8 p.m.\nApril 28 and May 5 at 2 p.m. \nTickets are $35/adults\, $30/senior and students. \nVisit  the Wilton Playshop website  for more information and tickets.

SUMMARY:Pockets\, Aprons\, and Sewing Workshop for Kids
DESCRIPTION:In the well-known nursery rhyme “Lucy Locket lost her pocket. . .\,” have you ever wondered how a pocket could be lost? Learn all about this essential item of dress for 18th and 19th century girls at a workshop for kids. According to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London\, “From the 17th century to the late 19th century\, most women had at least one pair of pockets\, which served a similar purpose as a handbag does today. They were usually worn underneath their petticoats . . . Many pockets were handmade and they were often given as gifts. Some were made to match a petticoat or waistcoat. Some were made over from old clothes or textiles. Pockets could also be bought ‘readymade’.” \nWilton Historical Society museum educator Laurie Walker will talk about how pockets were used and worn\, and show the kids how to cut out a pocket from colorful material and sew it onto an apron. A fully functional\, washable apron with a “custom” pocket is the result. Kids will help make their snack\, freshly baked sugar cookies with “pockets” of jam. \nThe workshop is suggested for children ages 6-12. \nThe cost for Wilton Historical Society members is $10 per child\, with a maximum of $25 per family; non-members’ cost is $15 per child\, with a maximum of $35 per family. Please register via email or by calling 203.762.7257. \nDid You Know? \nEighteen Maxims of Neatness and Order\, written by Theresa Tidy in 1819\, lists the essentials for a pocket:  “It is also expedient to carry about you a purse\, a thimble\, a pincushion\, a pencil\, a knife and a pair of scissors\, which will not only be an inexpressible source of comfort and independence\, by removing the necessity of borrowing\, but will secure the privilege of not lending these indispensable articles.” \nHowever\, many pockets were stolen–in the 18th and 19th centuries\, thieves known as ‘pickpockets’ removed men’s wallets and cut the strings of women’s pockets.

SUMMARY:Choral Concert: Music of the French Baroque
DESCRIPTION:Wilton’s own Music on the Hill presents an exquisite choral experience that will include the rarely performed works of French Baroque composer Marc Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704)\, including his “Te Deum\,” “Regina Caeli\,” and “Messe a 8 voix et 8 violons et flutes.” The festival and chamber choruses of Music on the Hill will be joined by organ\, trumpets\, strings and timpani in the acoustically rich and resonant church sanctuary. \nIt will be a special afternoon of music\, inspired by the lovely gardens and buildings of the Palais de Versailles\, where many of these musical gems were composed and/or originally performed in Charpentier’s lifetime. Living at virtually the same time as the Sun King\, Louis XIV (1638-1715)\, Charpentier and his music are representative of a distinctive era in French history\, when absolute monarchy reigned\, and France was widely recognized for its rich\, indulgent and breath-taking culture and arts–many say the greatest in French history.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Tyler Kepner\, "K: A History of Baseball in 10 Pitches"
DESCRIPTION:From New York Times national baseball writer Tyler Kepner comes K: A History of Baseball in Ten Pitches – a deep dive into the stories\, stats\, folklore\, and nostalgia behind America’s pastime told through vivid anecdotes and insights\, examining the fastball\, the curveball\, the changeup\, the slider\, the cutter\, the sinker\, the splitter\, the knuckleball\, the screwball\, and the spitball. \nKepner has found that pitchers almost always love to talk about their craft:  18 of the 25 pitchers with the most strikeouts in the history of the sport have shared their perspectives with him\, including Nolan Ryan\, Steve Carlton\, Bob Gibson\, Randy Johnson\, and Pedro Martinez. \nKepner\, who lives in Wilton\, started covering baseball as a teenager\, interviewing players for a homemade magazine that was featured in The New York Times in 1989. He attended Vanderbilt University on the Grantland Rice/Fred Russell sportswriting scholarship\, then covered the Angels and the Mariners. He joined The New York Times in 2000\, covering the Mets for two seasons\, the Yankees for eight\, and serving as the national baseball writer since 2010. \nQ&A will follow the talk. There is no charge to attend\, but registration is highly recommended. See the library’s online registration link for more details. Books will be available for purchase and signing courtesy of Elm Street Books\, New Canaan. Media Sponsor for the event is GOOD Morning Wilton. Register online or call 203.762.6334.

SUMMARY:Learn to Reset\, Recharge and Reconnect with Your Community
DESCRIPTION:Our modern conveniences are overwhelming us. We own twice the amount of stuff we did 50 years ago\, purging our spaces only to mindlessly click and fill them again. Social media overuse frazzles psychologists and impedes genuine connection. Online dating is at an all-time high across age groups; yet one-third of users never swipe right into offline romance. Americans bill more out-of-office hours than any other advanced economy\, and auto-binge-watching has replaced the much-anticipated movie marathon. \nIn a world architected for “overwhelm\,” it’s no wonder we can feel exhausted and unsure. We prize sisterhood and community among our greatest assets. Yet\, too often we get stuck in ruts and time passes swiftly. We feel a call to help others but struggle to find the time or energy to move forward and create lasting change. \nTo learn more about how you can reset\, recharge and reconnect with your community\, come to Wilton Library on Thursday\, May 9 at 7 p.m.. Wilton’s own Jacqueline Raposo will be speaking about The Me\, Without: A Year Exploring Habit\, Healing\, and Happiness\, her first book. \nRaposo will talk about how our brains can sometimes accidentally wire us for inactivity. She’ll explain what we can do to reset\, regroup and recharge ourselves first and foremost. Then\, with this renewed focus on “self\,” we can better connect to the communities we wish to serve. \nRaposo is an expert interviewer and writer of articles for Food & Wine\, Saveur and Cosmopolitan. She is the producer and co-host of “Love Bites Radio\,” and she connects chronic illness/disability advocates with protest events as the co-founder of #MarchingWithMe. \nAdmission is $20\, $10 for students. Please register in advance\, as seating is limited. Mail your check payable to “P.E.O. Chapter W” to Del Overby\, 105 Pine Ridge Rd.\, Wilton\, CT 06897\, or register online (a small fee applies). \nA light dessert reception will follow\, with an opportunity to meet Raposo and purchase her book\, courtesy of Elm Street Books. \nThis event is a fundraiser sponsored by The PEO Sisterhood\, an international philanthropic and educational organization that promotes educational opportunities for women. All proceeds will benefit PEO grants\, awards and scholarships to support women’s education. For information about PEO\, email Debbie Zucco or visit the PEO website.

Gambler Nathan Detroit tries to find the cash to set up the biggest craps game in town while the authorities breathe down his neck; meanwhile\, his girlfriend and nightclub performer\, Adelaide\, laments that they’ve been engaged for 14 years. Nathan turns to fellow gambler\, Sky Masterson\, for the dough\, and Sky ends up chasing the straight-laced missionary\, Sarah Brown\, as a result. \nGuys and Dolls takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana\, Cuba\, and even into the sewers of New York City\, but eventually everyone ends up right where they belong.

SUMMARY:Mother’s Day Herb Planter Workshop for Kids
DESCRIPTION:Learning about herbs and woodworking with the Wilton Historical Society. \nThe Society’s 1750 Colonial Herb Garden is greening up\, and the scents of various culinary and medicinal plants tickle the nose. Time for a program for kids to learn about herbs and woodworking in a hands-on way! After some time in the garden\, the kids will embark on a woodworking project with museum educator Laurie Walker:  constructing a simple wooden box\, painting it\, and tucking in three pots of herbs–perfectly timed for Mother’s Day gifting. Children will help make their snack\, a savory parmesan shortbread flavored with herbs. \nThe Colonial herb garden at the Wilton Historical Society’s Betts House\, splashed with color and fragrant with lavender and thyme\, is sight to behold in the spring and summer. The garden\, divided into sections for dyeing\, potpourri\, culinary\, and medicinal herbs\, is looking refreshed after a recent update to make it historically accurate to the year 1750. \nSome of the interesting plants that can be seen in the garden include Penny Royal (Mentha pulegium) a mint flavoring for soup; Rue (Ruta graveolens) for joint stiffness; Skirret (Sium sisarum) a flavoring for stews; and Wrinkled Rose (Rosa rugosa ‘rubra’) which provides Vitamin C to prevent scurvy. \nThe Wilton Historical Society welcomes any and all volunteers who would like to be part of the effort to maintain and sustain the Colonial herb garden. Please contact the Society at 203.762.7657 to become involved.
