SUMMARY:Wilton Library Author Talk with Samantha Greene Woodruff in Conversation with Jacqueline Friedland
DESCRIPTION:Join Wilton Library for an Author Talk program with Samantha Greene Woodruff in conversation with fellow author Jacqueline Friedland about Woodruff’s latest novel\, The Trade Off. Inspired by the true story of a pioneering investment legend\, The Trade Off is a powerful novel about identity\, sacrifice\, family loyalties\, and the complex morality of money. In this historical novel\, a brilliant and ambitious young woman strives to find her place amid the promise and tumult of 1920s Wall Street. \nBea Abramovitz has a gift for math and numbers. With her father\, she studies the burgeoning Wall Street market’s stocks and patterns in the financial pages. After college she’s determined to parlay her talent for the prediction game into personal and professional success. But in the 1920s\, in a Lower East Side tenement\, opportunities for women don’t just come knocking. Bea will have to create them. \nIt’s easier for her golden-boy twin brother\, Jake\, who longs to reclaim all their parents lost after fleeing the pogroms in Russia to come to America. Well-intentioned but undisciplined\, Jake has a charm that can carry him only so far on Wall Street. So Bea devises a plan. They’ll be a secret team\, and she’ll be the brains behind the broker. As Jake’s reputation\, his heedless ego\, and the family fortune soar\, Bea foresees catastrophe: an impending crash that could destroy everything if she doesn’t finally take control. \nWoodruff is the author of two number-one Amazon-bestselling historical fiction novels\, The Lobotomist’s Wife (2002) and The Trade Off (2024). She spent 15 years at Viacom’s Nickelodeon before leaving to parent her two young children. After studying in the continuing education program at the Writing Institute at Sarah Lawrence College\, Woodruff completed her first novel\, The Lobotomist’s Wife\, which was an Amazon First Reads pick. Her writing has appeared in Newsweek\, Writer’s Digest\, Female First\, Read 650 and more. In addition\, she has contributed an essay entitled “Jew-ish” about her lifelong conflicted relationship with Judaism\, to the anthology\, On Being Jewish Now (2024) edited by Zibby Owens. All proceeds from the book will go to Artists Against Antisemitism\, a non-profit founded in the aftermath of the October 7 attacks in Israel. Woodruff lives in southern Connecticut with her husband\, two children\, two dogs and a small reptile zoo. \nFriedland is the USA Today- and Amazon-bestselling author of both historical and contemporary women’s fiction. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and NYU Law School\, she practiced as a commercial litigator for as long as she could stand it. After determining that office life did not suit her\, she began teaching at the Benjamin Cardozo School of Law in Manhattan and working on her first book. She soon returned to school to earn her Master of Fine Arts from Sarah Lawrence College\, graduating from the program in 2016 and publishing her first novel shortly thereafter. Her books have been awarded the 2020 and 2021 gold medals in fiction from Reader’s Favorite and have been named a Best Indie Book of 2021 by Kirkus Reviews\, the SheReads Best Book Club Pick of 2021\, and a Women’s Fiction Writers Association Star finalist for 2022. Friedland regularly reviews fiction for trade publications and appears at schools and other locations as a guest lecturer. Her fifth novel\, Counting Backwards\, is forthcoming from Harper Muse in March 2025. Friedland lives in Westchester County\, NY with her husband\, four children and two very bossy dogs. \nElm Street Books will be on site to sell copies of The Trade Off\, which Woodruff will sign. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library. \nRegistration required. To register\, visit www.wiltonlibrary.org.

SUMMARY:Off the Plank: Pirate History in the Northeast
DESCRIPTION:Join WSHU reporter Davis Dunavin in the Brubeck Room at Wilton Library for exciting tales about Pirate History in the Northeast. Famous pirates like Captain Kidd and Black Sam Bellamy sailed through the waters around New York and New England\, having unusual adventures and meeting surprising (and occasionally grisly) fates. Dunavin traveled in their footsteps last year\, exploring pirate history for the podcast Off the Path. He’ll share stories of sunken treasure\, dramatic battles and more! Dunavin loves telling stories\, whether on the radio or around the campfire. An Edward R. Murrow Award-winning and Peabody Award-nominated journalist\, he is the host of WSHU’s Off the Path and created and hosted the 2022 series Still Newtown. He also teaches classes in media studies at Sacred Heart University. He started in Missouri and ended up in Connecticut\, which\, he’d like to point out\, is the same geographic trajectory taken by Mark Twain. Registration is suggested on the Wilton Library website.

SUMMARY:Author Talk with Jill Mays — "Nurturing Nature: Gardening for Special Needs"
DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library on Thursday\, Feb. 6\, at 7 p.m. when the library along with SPED*NET will present an author talk with Jill Mays on her new book Nurturing Nature: A Guide to Gardening for Special Needs. While the guide is geared specifically toward individuals with special needs\, it has much to offer gardening groups of all ages and abilities as well as anyone starting out. \n“Nurturing Nature provides lots of practical\, fun gardening activities for children. They will learn that nature is much more interesting than electronic devices.”— Dr. Temple Grandin \nVulnerable populations — such as neurodiverse or physically challenged individuals — are at an elevated risk of suffering from isolation and stress-related illnesses. Gardening is a good solution since it proves beneficial to physical\, cognitive\, and emotional health. This book gives readers all the information and resources they’ll need to get started! \nMays is the author of Your Child’s Motor Development Story\, highlighting the crucial importance of sensory exploration and natural play for healthy development. An occupational therapist specializing in sensory integration for many years\, she has conducted workshops in a variety of settings and provided consultation to parents\, educators and health care providers. For the past 10 years she has immersed herself in gardening\, working with farmers and assisting in the development of children’s garden programs. She developed and currently leads a garden group for special needs adults. Mays lives with her husband\, Eric\, their Portuguese water dog and a flock of chickens at the far end of Cape Cod. \nSPED*NET\, Special Education Network\, Ltd.\, is a volunteer-run nonprofit educational organization dedicated to helping parents of children with special needs become their children’s best advocates throughout the special services process and the transition to college\, employment or other post-secondary pursuits. The organization strives to empower parents\, support families and change the lives of children with special needs. \nElm Street Books will be on site to sell copies of the book\, which Mays will sign. A portion of the proceeds benefits Wilton Library. \nRegistration is required. To register\, visit the Wilton Library website.

SUMMARY:Parenting in Partnership: Blending Perspectives and Perceptions for More Strategic Parenting
DESCRIPTION:Being the parent of a child with special needs is often a confusing\, frustrating and deflating experience. The different experiences each parent has with their children can contribute to quite different perspectives on how best to guide them. \nIt’s a struggle to parent from the same page when we sometimes question if we’re even in the same book. School psychologist David P. Sylvestro\, MA\, CSP\, will discuss how parents can work to better sync their parenting philosophies and policies to be on the same page. Topics include enhancing parents’ knowledge base related to their child’s overall profile\, practicing the language of effective conflict resolution and expanding their affective vocabulary — the language of emotions. \nThis free event is an in-person presentation. Register online. \nPresented by SPED*NET in partnership with Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton Library and Newtown Sped PTA.
