SUMMARY:Wilton’s Architecture: An Update to the Historic House Survey
DESCRIPTION:An illustrated talk by architectural historians Stacey Vairo and Lucas Karmazinas\nAll are welcome! Reception to follow. \nOn Thursday\, Sept. 27 from 7-8:30 p.m. the public is cordially invited to an illustrated talk given by architectural historians Stacey Vairo of Scheller Preservation Associates and Lucas Karmazinas of FuturePast Preservation at the Wilton Historical Society. The pair has conducted a historic house survey primarily focused on buildings dating from 1920-1940 in Wilton\, of which there are over 400. In all\, about 160 structures have been added to Wilton’s Historic Resource Inventory. \nThe presentation will include information about how the survey was conducted and used\, interesting finds\, areas that would be appropriate to be studied for historic district designation and much more. The project has been funded by a Survey and Planning grant of $30\,000 from Connecticut’s State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) which was awarded to the Society in late 2016. At the lecture\, owners of any buildings that appear on the lists will be able to pick up a copy of their home’s history. \nPlease register via email or call 203.762.7257. \nVairo and Karmazinas conducted the survey using a combination of research and a “windshield survey\,” meaning they literally drove around Wilton looking at structures from the road or right of way (inventory surveys do not require access to the interior or rear of the structure)\, taking photos as they documented. Some of the styles of the period include Colonial Revival\, craftsman/bungalow\, Spanish Eclectic\, and Tudor revival\, plus the distinctive stone houses designed by Westport architect Frazier Peters\, and the stately homes of Wilton’s Nelson Breed. They consulted old maps\, researched within the town’s land records\, genealogy records\, the Society’s archives\, and other resources including the History Room at the Wilton Library. Discussions with Carol Russell\, town historian\, and Bob Russell\, author of the definitive history of Wilton\, and Society co-director/chair of the Historic District Commission Allison Gray Sanders\, and local architect Rob Sanders were also helpful.

SUMMARY:Wilton Historical Society's Colonial Cookery & Customs for Kids: Scalloped Tomatoes
DESCRIPTION:Recipes for Scalloped Tomatoes can be found dating back to the 1820s. A simple dish to prepare\, it needs little more than fresh tomatoes\, a little onion\, salt\, pepper\, bread crumbs and butter\, a thrifty way to handle a bountiful harvest. Why is it called “scalloped” when there are no scallops involved? There is no clear answer to that question! \nOn Saturday\, Sept. 29\, from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. the Wilton Historical Society will be holding a Colonial Cookery and Customs Workshop for Kids\, in which museum educator Lola Chen will be showing the children how to make Scalloped Tomatoes. She will also tell them about the tomato’s reputation\, which has evolved from the feared “poison apple” and “love apple” to an essential part of modern cuisine–who can imagine life without pizza\, tomato soup\, and salsa? \nThe Colonial Cookery and Customs for Kids workshop at the Wilton Historical Society teaches kids a “reciept” (recipe) historically used in the Connecticut region. While the food is prepared\, they hear about Colonial manners\, morals and way of life. The monthly workshops feature relatively simple dishes made with local\, seasonal ingredients\, adapted for modern kitchens. All participants will sample their own cooking and take home recipe cards–as well as any leftovers! The children will learn how a Colonial kitchen would have operated\, in order to appreciate the modern conveniences we take for granted. Previous sessions have made bannock cakes\, pease porridge\, pickles\, an amulet of green peas\, apple tansy\, fairy butter\, pumpkin bread\, cranberry shortbread\, New Year’s “cakes\,” New England chowder\, hand pies\, cheese and ramp soufflé\, pea and watercress Rappahannock\, blackberry maslin\, thirded bread\, pound cake with “Oranges” juice\, maple cup custard and pepper pot soup. \nSuggested for ages 6-12. \nWilton Historical Society Members $10 per child\, maximum $25 per family; non-members $15 per child\, maximum $35 per family. Space is limited–please register by email or call 203.762.7257. \n

SUMMARY:Playing By Heart XII Piano Benefit Concert
DESCRIPTION:Local Piano Students Perform at Wilton Library \n*This event is not sponsored\, co-sponsored\, or approved by Wilton Library.\nOn Sunday\, Sept. 30 at 2:30 p.m. in the Brubeck Room of the Wilton Library\, advanced students of Wilton pianist and teacher Kyong Hee Cho will perform in the 12th “Playing By Heart Benefit Concert.” \nThis year’s concert will benefit Norwalk Grassroots Tennis & Education (NGTE)\, an organization dedicated to helping “underserved children in Norwalk through tennis and education.” NGTE’s goal “is to ensure each of our kids is on a path towards success on the court\, in the classroom and in life.” Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students. \nThis year’s concert will feature music by Beethoven\, Brahms and Chopin as well as selections by more contemporary composers Debussy\, Morton Gould and Dmitry Kabalevsky. The program is set by the choices of the performers\, some of whom select a piece because they heard it performed by another student in a previous concert and often with the guidance of Mrs. Cho\, whose primary goal as a teacher is “…to develop music lovers as well as good listeners in addition to being proficient pianists.” \nPreparation for the concert begins well in advance of the September performance\, as the students (with the help of sponsors and parents) choose the beneficiary organization. Intensive practices and late summer rehearsals place a demand on these already busy students\, several of whom play other instruments in symphonic\, jazz and marching bands or school\, local and regional orchestras. Performers need to transcend mere memorization of notes to wrestle with dynamics and tempo to develop a unique interpretation of a piece. Although all play regularly in recitals\, they concur that this is different because “people have paid to hear you play.” \nAs Sharon Kesselman\, one of the adults who will perform\, put it\, “Without the performance\, there would be not as much incentive to learn the piece. It’s about being nervous\, wanting to show off my best\, wanting not to fail —all of this helps with motivation to practice a piece that has already been practiced quite a bit\, and then practice it some more. It’s about the journey.” \nTickets can be purchased at the door or in advance by contacting Kyong Hee Cho via email. \nPictured:  Top row–Sharon Kesselman\, Woongki Hong\, Colin Hong\, Jack Nanez\, Peyton Lauricella\, and teacher Kyong Hee Cho; bottom row–Alisyn Kercher and Claudia Nanez. Missing from the photo is student Martha West-Glynn.

SUMMARY:College Frenzy: How to Manage and Minimize the Stress
DESCRIPTION:Presentation and discussion for students and parents led by Susan Bauerfeld\, PhD\, Clinical Psychologist\, Parent Coach and Victoria Hirsch\, College Consultant \nThe College Process has come to be viewed as “THE BIG EVENT” in the lives of students and their families. The pressure associated with THE BIG EVENT often creates a lot of negative fallout\, such as ruptured relationships and high levels of stress and anxiety. In this presentation\, parent coach and clinical psychologist Susan Bauerfeld\, PhD and college consultant Victoria Hirsch will offer tips\, strategies and suggestions for viewing the college process as a natural next step rather than THE BIG EVENT and for managing the process in ways that foster resilience and relationships rather than discord and despair. \nThis presentation is aimed at students and parents of students who are preparing for and/or actively applying to college. If you (or your child) are not yet in high school we suggest you relax and think about other things this year. That being said\, all students\, parents and other interested parties are welcome to attend. \nAdmission is free; online registration is recommended. Please email Genevieve Eason with questions. \nSponsored by:  Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton High School Counseling\, Wilton Youth Council\, and Wilton Youth Services

SUMMARY:“Inside Genealogy Today: How Family History Became a Growth Industry” Wilton Historical Soc. Presentation
DESCRIPTION:The ease and fast results of DNA testing\, along with ever-growing\, on-line databases of census records\, historic newspapers\, ship manifests\, and sites that can help you “find a grave” (and much more!) have prompted a host of people to embark on a search for their family’s origins. The popular genealogy-based program\, “Finding your Roots\,” hosted by Henry Louis Gates\, Jr. on PBS aims to “get into the DNA of American Culture” as he explores the genealogy of celebrities\, revealing exciting and unexpected results. \nWho knows what you might find? Family history researchers now have a vastly expanded universe of information to mine. Certified genealogist Fred Hart\, Jr. will discuss modern vs. traditional methods of researching genealogy\, including using technology\, DNA testing and internet “trees.” He will talk about how (and why) the field has changed in positive and/or negative directions\, and comment on how the field of genealogy has expanded\, sparking renewed interest in the field. A light lunch will be served. \nFred Hart (b. 1937) is a native of Norwalk\, Connecticut and a graduate of Dartmouth College (AB\, 1958) and the Thayer School of Engineering (MSEE\, 1960). He has held the Certified Genealogist credential since 1993 and accepts clients when his availability permits. He is an active member in several genealogical organizations including Connecticut Ancestry Society where he has held the position of genealogist for many years\, and the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society\, where he serves on the editorial Board of its journal\, and where he was elected a Fellow of that Society in October\, 2015. \nMr. Hart has a Wilton connection\, too\, saying “You might want to call me Genealogist Fred Hart Jr. since some might remember my father of the same name who was a Wilton resident for many years before passing away in 1990. My mother\, Eleanor Hart\, who died there in 2007\, was very active in the Hurlbutt Street Schoolhouse and other Wilton organizations.” \nWilton Historical Society members are free; the cost for non-members is $10 per person. Please register via email or by calling 203.762.7257. \nDid You Know? \nThe Confucius family tree consists of 80 volumes containing two million names! \n“The revival of China’s love-affair with the ideas of Confucius has taken another significant step forward after 1\,000 members of China’s most powerful aristocratic clan unveiled the first complete edition of their family tree for more than 70 years. Amid the blast of horns and the thumping of drums which shook the ground at the great temple in the sage’s ancestral town of Qufu\, the 80-volume genealogy containing 2 million names was unveiled by the clan’s leading elder in China. . . . The Kong ‘Clan Register’\, which stretches back more than 1\,000 years\, had not been updated since 1937. According to custom it should be revised at 30-year intervals but in 1967 the terror and persecution of the Cultural Revolution made that impossible. . . . It was a history that was brutally interrupted during the Cultural Revolution of 1966-1976 when Confucius – “Kong Fuzi” in Chinese – was reviled as a “stinking corpse” by Chairman Mao who’s Red Guards were ordered to destroy Confucian artifacts and persecute his ancestors as symbols of feudal oppression. . . In a nod to modern times\, the register will contain the names of women for the first time and will be available on a computer database. A copy will be deposited at China’s National Library in Beijing.” — excerpted from a Sept. 25\, 2009 article in The Telegraph by Peter Foster
