DESCRIPTION:Please join Wilton Library for an in-person presentation by Philip Clark\, author of the acclaimed biography\, Dave Brubeck: A Life in Time. He is trained as a composer\, but these days prefers to play improvised music. \nRegistration is required. Register online or call 203.762.6334.

SUMMARY:The Modern American Novel with Mark Schenker (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Mark Schenker of Yale College returns via Zoom in a continuation of his 2021 lectures on classic novels for Wilton Library. \nHaving discussed the Victorian novel last spring and the modern British novel this past fall\, he turns now to American fiction in the first decades of the 20th century. With reference to masterworks by five acclaimed American authors\, he will consider the changing nature of the novel as an art form\, the rise of modernism\, the influence of the First World War\, and the ways in which American fiction of the period resembles and differs from English novels of the same era. \nAttendees are not expected to read or reread all or even any of the novels\, but a familiarity with them will of course make the lectures more meaningful. Here are the novels for each week: March 3 — Winesburg\, Ohio; March 17 — This Side of Paradise; March 24 — In Our Time; March 31 — The Sound and the Fury. \nThis lecture series is made possible with the support of the Literary Series in Memory of Amy Quigley. Advance registration is required. You will automatically be registered for all five sessions in the series. To register\, visit the Wilton Library website.

SUMMARY:Executive Function Skills Your Teens Need Before Graduating from High School
DESCRIPTION:Join Mary Murphy\, PhD\, a licensed clinical psychologist\, on Wednesday\, Mar. 30\, from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. on Zoom for a discussion on the executive function skills your teens need to learn before graduating from high school and how you can assist them in developing and implementing helpful strategies. \nWe use executive function skills every day to study\, work\, manage the ins and outs of daily life\, and become independent learners. These vital mental skills — the “management system of the brain” — include working memory\, cognitive flexibility\, and impulse control and are responsible for skills like paying attention\, organizing\, planning\, and prioritizing. \nHaving trouble with EF skills is common\, both for typical learners and for those who think and learn differently. A teen can struggle with EF skills even without a formal diagnosis of a learning disability or ADHD. In addition\, everyone with ADHD has EF difficulties and most students with other learning challenges also struggle with them. It doesn’t mean these kids are lazy or not intelligent. What it does mean\, however\, is that these kids need specific help acquiring and mastering EF skills and strategies. \nResearch shows that college students with EF challenges experience substantial academic and social-emotional difficulties throughout their college years. \nPresented by SPED*NET Wilton in partnership with Wilton Youth Council\, Wilton Public Schools\, Wilton Library\, and Newtown Sped PTA. \nTo register\, visit this website.

SUMMARY:Clara Schumann: Ultra Pianist\, Performer and Pedagogue (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:In this Wilton Library Zoom session\, Jeffrey Engel will discuss the remarkable career of Clara Schumann and play selected excerpts from her compositions. \nAt Clara’s death in May of 1896\, an obituary appearing in the Manchester Guardian proclaimed her “the greatest pianist of her sex that the world has ever known.” This was not hyperbole. Even as a child prodigy\, Clara was placed in the top tier of her contemporaries\, both male and female. In some ways\, she was also ahead of her time. Clara promulgated music by Beethoven\, Chopin and Robert Schumann that was largely unknown to the public. She was the first to perform from memory. Clara was also an influential teacher and composer of talent\, even though she stopped writing music before the age of 40. She was unquestionably one of the great musicians of the 19th century! \nJeffrey Engel has been giving lectures devoted to music history for some 15 years. As a cellist\, he played with numerous orchestras in France including that of the Paris Opera\, performed in chamber ensembles and taught in municipal conservatories. Since 2004\, Engel has taught at Northwestern Connecticut Community College (Winsted). He was a contributor to the 2001 edition of the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. In 2010 he was selected by Litchfield Magazine as one of the 50 most influential people in Litchfield County. \nRegistration is required. Register online.

SUMMARY:Ukrainian Egg (Pysanky) Decorating Workshop for Adults and Kids
DESCRIPTION:Learn the colorful and venerable craft of decorating eggs in the Ukrainian style\, known as pysanky (the name is derived from the Ukrainian verb meaning to write). Expert egg decorator Susan Clark will lead the Wilton Historical Society‘s workshop for adults and children. This ancient craft uses symbols and motifs to create a jewel-like egg. Intricate designs can be created with geometric forms\, or with more naturalistic\, flowing patterns. Participants will be using a kistka\, a pointed implement a bit like a pen\, filled with beeswax and heated\, to draw designs on the eggs between bathing them in colored dye. Decorate eggs in a traditional design\, or create your own. \nThe workshop is strictly limited to 20 participants. The program will take place in the Abbott Barn. Family groups will be seated together.  The fee — $30 for Wilton Historical Society members\, $40 for non-members — is per participant and includes materials. The program is suitable for adults and children ages 9 and up. \nRegistration is required via email or by calling 203.762.7257.

SUMMARY:“Darshana: A Glimpse into Hindu Civilization” Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Chapter of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) invites the Wilton community to view this exhibition about Hindu Civilization. \nHindu Swayamsevak Sangh USA\, Inc.\, is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable organization that promotes self-discipline\, self-confidence\, and a spirit of selfless service for humanity through its structured values-based educational program for Hindu children and adults. Currently\, HSS operates nearly 250 branches nationwide\, including four branches in the state of Connecticut. \nHindus contribute to the surrounding society as individuals and as a community. To let our neighbors\, leaders\, educators\, and the broader community know more about Hindu Civilization\, Wilton HSS is presenting an exhibition called\, “Darshana: A Glimpse into Hindu Civilization.” We are pleased to invite you to this very first exhibition at Comstock Community Center (180 School Rd.) on Sunday\, April 3 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. \nHSS volunteers were at the forefront of humanitarian relief in their respective neighborhoods in 2020 during the challenging time of COVID-19 and helped in vaccination drives in many communities. Apart from the social service efforts — called “Sewa” projects — our annual national programs such as “Health for Humanity Yogathon” have gained in popularity in American society where people of all walks of life participate. \nThis exhibition is a platform to engage the public while fostering common ideals and shared values. This event is for all ages and people from all walks of life\, and it’s an opportunity to deepen awareness of Hindu culture and contributions to society\, creating an environment of harmonious coexistence while pursuing Universal Oneness. This exhibition provides glimpses into Hindu Dharma\, a way of life\, and Hindu Civilization\, including traditions\, culture\, contribution\, and fun facts.

SUMMARY:Library/Historical Society Scholarly Series — Tycoons: Bane or Benefactors? Mark Zuckerberg with Dr. Drew Harris
DESCRIPTION:In the 15th year of collaboration between Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society\, this five-part scholarly lecture series held virtually will focus on the theme of “Tycoons: Bane or Benefactors?” \nDuring this program\, “Mark Zuckerberg: Poster Child for Promise and Peril in the Tech Sector\,” Prof. Drew Harris\, Central Connecticut State University\, will discuss Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook. “College drop-out becomes a billionaire” is the story of great hope for many would-be entrepreneurs. His flagship product\, Facebook\, has provided vital social connections for billions of people\, but it is also at the heart of public controversies ranging from exploitation of personal data to rapid\, widespread dissemination of false information and conspiracy paranoia. At the launch into the Metaverse (the latest Zuckerberg venture)\, let’s take stock of Zuckerberg\, his leadership as a tech tycoon\, and the consequences for business and society. \nThe moderator is Max Gabrielson. This program is sponsored by Elaine Tai-Lauria and Phil Lauria and hosted virtually by Wilton Library. There is no charge to attend; donations are welcome. Registration is required for each individual lecture in order to receive the Zoom invitation link. Please visit the Wilton Library website for additional dates\, topic and speaker details\, and registration.
